, 1922. Serial N0. 576,270.
In carrying out the invention, I have provided a construction of sewing machine which includes a work support, a standard supported thereby, an overhanging arm projecting from said standard, and carrying a head at its forward end in which the needle bar supporting the needle vreciprocates.
Mounted in this overhangin arm and standard is a rotary shaft an this rotary shaft reciprocates the needle bar. Said rotary shaft also is provided with ad'ustablefeed eccentrics for operating the eeding mechanism. Also located in the standard is a vertical shaft which is geared to the upper rotating shaft in the overhanging arm so that the rotary movements of the upper shaft are imparted to the vertical shaft. This vertical shaft extends downwardly to a point below the work support where it carries a crank, and this crank is utilized for imparting oscillating movements to the looper. The looper is of a thread carrying typeand is mounted so as to oscillate ina horizontal plane and the looper operating mechanism is so constructed as to -give a dwell to the looper at the forward end of its stroke.` The llooper is mounted in the looper carrier so that it may be readily swung to position for threading and also readily removed for replacement when desired.
Referring more in detail to the drawi my improved sewing machinev includes a work support l having. a depending flange 2 for housing the parts beneath thework sup# port. Mounted on said work support is a standard 3 whichl is secured thereto by suitable bolts or screws V4,v 4. This.;vertical standard 3 carries an overhanging arm 5,- at the forward end of which is a head 6 in lwhich the needle bar 7 reciprocates. Said needle bar 7 carries a needle 8. Also mounted in this head is a presser bar 9 carrying a presser foot l0.
Mounted in suitable bearings in thestandi Y shaft is driven by a belt oscillates. Said looper carrier 21 which is secured c at its forward end, a thread Y an opening 26 at its heel lthread passes.
v the looper and lated by means fof an eccentricv strap 19,
while the shaft 17 is oscillated by means of an eccentric strap 20. These eccentric straps 19 and 20 cooperate with eccentrics on the main shaft 11. the strap 19 is carried by an adjustable plate to a plate 22 fixed to the shaft, and this aords a means for varying the throw of the eccentric and thus the length ofV the stitch. This feeding mechanism forms no part of the present invention, and other forms of feeding mechanisms may be used in place thereof.
The looper which coopera-tes with the rneedle 8 is indicated at 23 in the drawings.
thread eye 24 Said looper is formed with a groove 25 and through which the The looper is provided with an integral shank 27 from which extends a pin 28 and a. lug 29.
. The specific means shown for oscillating giving a dwell thereto at the forward end of its stroke is more clearly shown and described in my prior Patent No. 1,123,578, granted January 5, 1915'.
The looper is carried by the looper carrier 30. This looper carrier 30 is mounted in a bracket 31 secured byr screws 32, 32 to the bearing lug 33 in which mounted. The bracket 31 is provided with spaced arms in which the looper carrier 30 is fixed to a shaft 34. The looper carrier extends above head portion 35 the upper arm 31 and is provided with a having a socket 36 adapted to receive the pin 28 of the looper. Said head portion also has an overhanging bracket 37 underneath 'which the shank of the looper 27 passes. A latch 38 is pivoted at 39 to the head portion 35 After the looper supporting shank pin 28 has been fully seated in the socket 36, then the shank portion is swung underneath the bracket 37 and the latch 38 raised behind lug 29 to hold the on its carrier.
lates back and forth with the carrier. When, however, it is desired to thread the looper, then the latch 38 can be readily moved down to the position shown in Fig. 6, and the looper swung on the pin 28 to withdraw it from underneath the throat plate 40 so that it may be readily reached through theV opening closed by the` cover plate 41. I If it is necessary to remove the looper when it is in this position for thread-` ing, it may be readily lifted out of the carrier so that the latch 38 performs` two functions. Tt permits the looper to be moved to threading position, and it also permits The eccentric operating the shaft 17 isV of the looper carrier.'
looper in a rigid position The looper thus held oscil-V the looper to be entirely removed from the carrier.
The looper oscillates back and forth in a horizontal plane and movements are imparted to the looper by a swinging arm 42 anda link 43 which pivotally connects the free end of the arm 42 to an arm 44 on the looper carrier. These parts are so disposed that when the looper is-at the forward end of its stroke, the arm and the link are substantially in alinement and therefore the looper comes to a relatively long dwell, while when the looper is at the rear end of its stroke, the parts are in the position shown in F ig. 2 and there is practically no dwell given to the looper, it reverses its movement almost instantly.
The arm 42 is mounted to swing about a pivot post 45 and is oscillated by means of a link 46. VThe link 46 is connected to a crank pin 47 carried by a crank arm 48 on the lower end of a vertical shaft 49. This vertical shaft 49 is provided with a bevel gear 50 at its upper end which meshes with a bevel gear 51 fixed to the main shaft. There is a split bearing 52 which extends about the gears 5() and 51, and this bearing is secured to the arm of the machine in any suitable way. I have shown the bea-ring as secured to the arm yby means of a. screw 53. The bearing serves as a support for the upper end of the shaft 49 and holds the gears 50 and y51- in mesh. There is another bearing 54 for the lower end of the shaft 49.
From the above it will be apparent that I have provided a chain stitch machine wherein the thread carrying looper is oscillated by means connected with an upper rotary shaft, that is, a rotary shaft rotated in the overhanging arm, which rotary shaft reciprocates the needle. This actuating means for the .looper includes a vertical shaft which conveys the rota-ry movements of the upper shaft to a point beneath the work support and the rotary movements of this upper shaft is there made available for direct connection with the looper mechanism for operating the same.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The'combination of a work support, a throat plate carried thereby, said work support having an Iopening at one side of said throat plate, a thread carrying looper beneath the work support, a carrier for said looper for supporting the same whereby the looper moves in a single horizontal plane, said looper having a pin attached to its shank adapted to removably and rotatably by said looper may be moved about the axis of the pin for positioning the looper at one side of the throat plate .for threading and whereby said looper may be removed from the carrier when in threading position, and a swinging latch for holding the looper in normal working position on said carrier.
2. The combination of a work support, a throat plate carried thereby, an opening at One side of said throat plate, a thread carrying looper beneath the work support, a carrier for said thread carrying looper for supporting the same whereby said looper moves in a single horizontal plane, said looper having a pin attached to its shank adapted to engage a socket in said looper carrier whereby said looper may be moved about the pin as an axis for positioning the same at one side of the throat plate for threading, and means at the end of the said looper carrier having an overhanging bracket underneath which the shank of the looper may move when in normal position for stitching, and a latch for holding the looper in said stitching position on the carrier.
3. The combination of a work support, a throat plate carried thereby, an opening at one side of said throat plate, a thread carrying looper beneath the work support, a carrier .for said thread carrying looper for supporting the same whereby said looper moves in a single horizontal plane, said looper having a pin attached to its shank adapted to engage a socket in said looper carrier where by said looper may be moved about the pin as an axis for positionin the same at one side of the throat plate or threading, and means at the end of said looper carrier having an overhano'ing bracket underneath which the shank o? the looper may move when LANSING ONDERDONK.
