HERVEY SULLINGS, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLING TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,520, dated January 18, 1876; application filed December 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that HERVEY SULLINGS, of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable [mprovementin ()ar-Gouplin g Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a v part of this specification, and to the letters and the said tube near the base of the first. and
an operatin gshaft extending through the bore of the tube, and actuated by a handle working in slots formed therein, whereby a Very useful and effective implement is produced for raising the link in an ordinary pin-and-link coupler without passing in between the cars to be coupled, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a metallic tube of suitable length, provided with a curved handle, 61, and near it with slot at, and at its other end with a rigid curved finger, B, having a groove, 1), at its end, for a purpose hereinafter explained. O designates a metallic shaft running inside of the tube A through its entire length, and D designates a clamp-finger made of metal, which finger is pivoted in slot at near. the end of the tube, and is pivotally connected with the said shaft, as shown in figure. E designates a spiral spring arranged in the closed rear end of the tube A, which bears against shaft G,
for the purpose of holding jaws B D open. Shaft O is provided with a handle, F, working transversely inslot a, as shown in figure.
The manner of operating my improved tool is as follows: The person designing to couple the cars, standing outside of the car-track, will grasp the handle 01 of the improved tool with one hand; he will then clamp the link between fingers B D by drawing forcibly outward on handle F with the other, the said link being steadied by groove I) in the end of the fixed curved finger. The link will then be passed in between the cars in a transverse manner, and held in a horizontal position at such a height as to enter the draw-bars of the cars to be coupled. The attendant not being between thecars when they come together, he is in no danger of being wounded orin any other man ner hurt.
The link being adjusted to its right position, the pins can be passed through the draw-bars, into and through them after the cars are at rest, and all danger of injury to the attendant is passed.
'VVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure I by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupling tool, the combination, with a metallic tube, A, having fixed finger B, pivoted finger 1), and cross-handle d, of the operating-shaft, having handle F arranged within the said tube, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with the pivoted and fixed fingers B D, the operating-handle F and spring E, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HEBVEY SULLINGS.
