UNITED STATES JOHN R. MOUNTAIN, 0F WARREN, OHIO.
SPEED-CONTROL BOX FOR STEEL LADLES.
Application led December This invention relates to speed control box for steel ladle used in the pouring of steel ingots.
Another object of the' invention is to provide a device for regulating the speed of pouring ingots.
Another object of the device is to regulate the temperature in pouring steel ingots.
Another object is to provide a device for eliminating undesirable pressure of the steel as it flows into ingot moulds.
A still further object is to provide means of pouring two or more ingots at the same time.
In the manufacture of steel one of the difficult problems has been to make clean, sound and reliable ingots that may be reduced to desirable manufactured goods without an undesirable percentage of rejections due to irregularities in the steel ingot such as blow holes, cracks, seams, blisters and irregularities as to the steel structure in the lower half of ingots.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in t-he precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device showing its position in relation to a ladle.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 ofFigure 1 together with ingot moulds and supports for same.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that I have provided a control box 1 which is provided with brackets 2. These brackets 2 are provided with slots 3 for the reception of securing loops 4. These securing loops 4 are each provided With a slotted opening 5 for the reception of tapering key 6. By this means the control box 1 is held in a desired position underneath a ladle 7. rlhe control box 1 is constructed so as to have a steel casing 8 and lined with al suitable heat resisting material 9. In order that this control box may be relined there has been provided 5, 1927. Serial No. 237,653.
a detachable end 10 held in position by securing keepers 11.
In operating this device the ladle 7 is filled with a molten steel and heldwithin the ladle 7 by means of a stopper 12. Before lifting the stopper 12 the operator will press downwardly upon a lever arm 13 which is supported by brackets 14. Through the brackets 14 there is provided a pivot pin 15 which passes through the brackets 14 and the lever arm 13. An inner end 16 of the lever arm 13 is provided with a pivoted link member 17 which is attached to a stop er rod 18 functioning with a stopper 19. his stopper 19 opens outlet 20. The outlet 21 when used is to be constructed with a similar' stopper arrangement as shown for the outlet 20. The molten steel in the ladle 7 when released by raising the stopper 12 allows the molten steel to flow into the interior of the control box l where it flows down an incline 22 forming a bottom of the control box l. Before allowing the steel to How down into the control box 1 the outlet 20 should be opened by pulling out a gate 23 which slides upon keepers 24. The steel now passes gently down the incline 22 and through the outlets 20 and 21 running into ingot moulds 25 and 26 which are positioned upon ordinarily movable supports directly underneath the control box outlets 20 and 21.
It will readily be seen that as the molten steel flows into the control box 1 pressure has been relieved and the molten steel flows more gently into the ingot moulds 25 and 26. It is understood that in order to reach desirable results the outlets 20 and 21 will vary in size in order to approximate to a desirable degree the time in pouring in order to control, within reasonable limits, the temperature of the molten metal before entering the ingot moulds 25 and 26. It is also understood that an intake 27 formed on the upper surface of the control box 1 and functioning with an outlet 28 in the bottom of the ladle 7 may vary in size in order to regulate the flow of the molten steel in order that the temperature and pressure of the molten steel within the control box l may be regulated so as to cause the production of ingot free from ordinary perfections.
lVhen the ladle 7 is about empty, it Will be better to close the outlet 20 by manipulating the lever' arm 13 and close the gate 23 so that there will be but one outlet 21 which will eliminate the necessity of having but one steel butt formed in the ingot mould26.
lVhat I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a speed and temperature control box detach ably and tightly secured underneath a ladle, means for pouring one or more ingots at the same time, means for closing. all but one outlet of said speed and temperature control box, substantiallyas described. Y
2. In a device of the class described, a detachable control box detachably and tightly secured underneath an ordinary ladle, an opening in the upper portion oit said control box functioning with an opening in the bottom of said ladle, a plurality of outlets in said control box, said plurality of outlets of said control box positioned near the bottom of an incline forming a bottom oisaid control box, means for opening and closing all outlets of said control box except one, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, a detachable control box detachably and tightly secured underneath an ordinary ladle, an opening in the upper portion of said control box functioning With an opening in the bottom of said ladle, a plurality of outlets in said control box, said plurality of outlets of f said control box positioned near the bottom of an incline forming a bottom of said control box, means for opening and closing all outlets osaid control box-except one, a detachable end formed on said control box for the purpose of getting proper lining material into the control box, substantially as described.
Ll. In a device of the class described, a control box tightly secured to a bottom of a ladle, an opening` in the upper surface of said control boxat a central point functioning With an opening in said ladle, a plurality of openings in said control box.
In testimony whereof I aHix my signature.
