APPARATUS FOR EXHAUSTING AIR FROM CONTAINERS.
Application filed January 23, 1928.
The present invention relates to improvements in apparatus for exhausting air from containers and has for its primary object to provide an apparatus for exhausting the air from milk cans and similar containers for preserving the milk or other contents of the container.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of the above character which may be removably associated with a container so that the same may be eniployed for exhausting the air from a series of cans.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatus of the above character which is comparatively simple and durable of construction and which will be efficient for the purpose intended.

Referring to the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates a cont-ainer, more specifically embodying a longitudinally elongated cylindrical can of the type commonly employed as a milk container. The bottom of the can is enclosed by fixed bottom plates 6 while the upper end is enclosed by a removable cover 7. The upper edge of the can 5 is formed with an exterior peripheral flange 8 formed at regularintervals with inverted U-shaped brackets 9 provided at the upper outer ends with horizontal apertured flanges 10 projecting substantially in a horizontal plane with the upper edge of the can.
The cover 7 is formed so as to be tightly fitted upon the upper edge of the can and is provided with slotted ears 11 arranged to correspond with and overlie the flanges 10 in operative position. The cover is rigidly secured to the flanges 10 by means of wing bolts 12 or any suitable manner.

As noted in Figure 3, the cover is formed with an opening 13 interiorly screw threaded to receive one end of an angular conduit 14. This conduit embodies a vertical pipe section 15 having its lower end threadedly connected with the opening 13, an elbow fitting 16 and a horizontal pipe section 17. Interposed between the fitting 16 and the vertical pipe section 15 is ayvacuum gauge 18. A stop valve 19 is also arranged in the conduit, preferably between the elbow fitting 16 and the horizontal pipe section 17, to control the passage of air through the angular conduit. As clearly illustrated in Figure 3, the tting 16 is provided with a swinging check valve 20 arranged to permit the exhaust of air from the container and, to automatically close during the return stroke of the pump.
The pipe section 17 is threadedly connected with one end of a vacuum pump cylinder 21 disposed in a horizontal position and supported Vupon a hollow stand 22. The stand 22 is formed integral with or secured to an elongated base plate 23 provided with a series of openings for detachable connection with the cover 7. On the outer end of the base plate 23 are formed spaced bearing brackets 24 adapted to form a journal for a vertically swinging lever 25. The lower end of the lever 25 is pivotally connected with the brackets 24 while the upper end is formed with an operating handle 26. The intermediate portion of the lever is formed with a. longitudinally extending slot 27, the purpose of which will be presently described.
Slidably mounted in the cylinder 21, for reciprocating movement, is a piston 28, preferably provided with a. swinging check valve and operated through the medium of a horizontally projecting piston rod 29 extending through the outer head of the cylinder. The outer extremity of the piston rod 29 is formed with a yoke 30 adapted to straddle the lever 25 and connected thereto by means of a pin 31 extending through the opposed arms of the yoke and through the slot in the lever.
In operation, the vertical reciprocating movement of the lever 25 will create a suction in the cylinder 21 so that the air in the angular conduit 14 and the container upon which the cover is mounted, will be exhausted. When exhausting the air from a particular container, the cover 7 is initially fitted thereon` as described, and the pump mounted on the top surface of the cover. The

pump is then connected with the horizontal pipe section 17 in communication with the conduit and the interior of the container. The valve 19 is then opened and the air eX- hausted from the can 5. When the air is eX- hausted to a suitable degree, the valve 19 is closed and the pump removed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination with a container having cover securing means formed thereon, of a cover adapted to be removably tted on the container, a conduit connected to the cover and communicating with an opening therethrough, means connected to the opposite end of the conduit adapted to exhaust the air from the container when the cover is in position thereon, means mounted on the conduit for controlling the passage of air therethrough, and a floatable disc slidably fitted inside the container and adapted to ioat at the surface of the liquid stored in said container.
