Description

C. E. L. HOLMES.
LOOM-PICKER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. L. HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY MOMANUS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOOM-PICKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,439, dated January 18, 1876; application filed J 11116 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWD. LATI- MER HOLMES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Looms, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to prevent the rapid destruction of the pickers and staffs in that class of looms in which the picker is propelled by blows of the staff; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention. showing a picker and part of the rod and staff; Fig. 2, a modification; and Fig. 3, a view, showing the manner in which an ordinary picker is worn by contact with the staff.
In that class of looms in which the picker is propelled by a direct blow of the staff the constant rapid strokes of the latter (frequently exceeding sixty a minute) soon render both staff and picker unserviceable, by wearing away the picker at the point .r, Fig. 3, and the stalf at the point where it strikes the picker, so that both must be discarded, although in other respects they are still serviceable. I overcome this defect by interposing between the picker and the staff an elastic cushion, carried by the picker, which will ab sorb the shocks and prevent any deterioration of the parts from the cause mentioned, the elastic material being preferably detachable, so that, if Worn, it may be readily re- Many elastic mediums, as rubber, compressed sponge, cork, or springs, or air-cushions. will suggest themselves as suitable for the purpose named. I prefer, however, on account of its cheapness and ready application to employ rubber, which may be applied to the picker, as shown in Fig. l of the draw- 1ng.
The picker A may be of rawhide, or of metal or other material, and is provided with a socket for the reception of the block a of rubber, which projects beyond the edge of the picker.
Fig. 2 illustrates the manner in which an aircushion may be employed-a piston or plunger, d, fitting a closed cham berm, in thepicker, and the stem or rod of the piston projecting outward, so as to be struck by the staff, the air compressed by driving in the piston acting as the elastic medium.
Without restricting myself to any special form of picker, or to the use of any special elastic medium, I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A loom-picker, provided with an elastic cushion arranged to receive the blow by which the picker is propelled, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRED. E. BEACH, W. H. WOODHULL.
