UNITED S A PATENT Fries.
WILLIAM L. HEPINEUZE, or PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA, asslen'on OF TWO-THIRDS H-ISIRIGHT TO GREGORY BARAGZI- DE nrM'rrszoM AT AND JOSEPH HEILBRUN, or SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN URINALSn Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [72,433, dated J anuary 18, 1876; application filed December 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. HEPINEUZE, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Urinals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side views. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are horizontal sections, respectively, ofFigs. l, 2, and 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a urinal box or chamber whose upper portion is transparent, so as to permit the illumination of the place where the box is located, and admission oflight thereinto. It further consists of means for ventilating the box, the air being heated and purified and forcibly driven through apertures in the cornice and top. It also consists of a grated floor, below which is a passage which leads to, or communicates with, the waste-pipe, so that water dropping on the floor will pass through the same, reach the passage, and flow into the waste-pipe.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the lower portion of the box, which may be made for accommodation of one or several persons, and, consequently, have one or more doors, B, and urinal-basins O, and said box will be, preferably, constructed of metal, and the inner face thereof, for a height of, say, five feet, lined with porcelain, enamel, or other proper material, so that said face may be readily cleansed. Above the box is a metallic frame-work, D, whose spaces are occupied by glass or windows, and within said frame will be placed the burner D of a gas-fixture, lamp, or other light, whereby the frame or upper portion of the box may be readily illuminated, thus serving at night to give light as a street-lamp, and indicate the location of the box, and, during the day, admit light into the box. E represents a metal dome, which is supported on the frame D. In the cornice F and top G of said dome there are numerous ventilating-apertures, a, and said cornice and top overhang the apertures so that rain and snow are prevented from entering the box through said apertures.
It will be seen that foul air will escape through the apertures a, and this operation will be assisted by the flame of the burner D, which will heat and purify the air, and increase the draft to the exit-openin gs a. The urinalbasin 0 will have attached to it a pipe, H, for passage of fresh water therein, and a pipe, J, for discharge of the waste water, the fresh Water passing to the latter, and serving to wash the basin and pipe J. Surrounding the pipes H J is a packing, K, which, during the cold season, will prevent freezing of the pipes, and thus thelatter will not be closed or stopped. L represents the fioorof the box, which is of metal, and open or grated, and below the same is a passage or space, M, which leads to the waste-pipe below the basin, so that water dropping on the floor will'pass through the same, reach the passage M, and be directed to the waste'pipe, by which means ample provision is made for drainage, and the floor may be kept clean and dry. In the event of washing the floor. the water therefrom will readily flow into the wastepipe. The grated floor may be pivoted to an adjacent portion of the box, and may be connected to the cool: of the fresh-water pipe, so that, as a person steps on the floor, it will lower and operate the cook, whereby the water will be turned on. When the person leaves the floor, a spring, suitably located, Will restore it to its normal position, and the cock will close, the water then being cut off. The door B will be made self= closing, and it will occupy only a portion of the height of the box, so that a space, N, is left above the door, whereby, with the other features stated, a most thorough ventilation will be produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The urinal-box, consisting of the lower p rtj0n A,,a1 1d upper transparent portion D, grated floor; L, and 'the passage M below phe v gn bs'tgiljfijjfllyg giS-ainlfor theypurpose set forth. floor communicaklghp'g wi-fih mhemwstepipe,a sub- 2.
