Transfer material being of a variety of consisteneies, a quality should be selected which does not smut readily and which is not'too soft, order to obtain the best practical results. By coating the under faces of the leaves y transfer material .in spots, as distinguished from over all, sufficient adherence for operatively retaining registration is obtained, and yet, because of the area of the spot being restricted in size, the adherence is not so great as to revent relief of the adhering effect 'and re ative movement, by the feeding and registering mechanism of the machine, be-

For faeilitatinfr the manifolding set from van adjacent set, the fold lines 1, 2 and 3 are weakened, as by being perforated, and it will be noted that the spots hereinbefore referred to occur on one or more leaves of each manifolding set, so that when any-set is torn off, even after inseription in the machine, it is still in a condition for subsequent manifold inscription within the spotted area.
In order to facilitate the advance of the manifolding sets through the machine, the
under or outer face 13 of the lowermost leaf of each of the manifolding sets' is left clean and unspotted, so as to move smoothly over the platen of the machine without substantial adherence thereto and so as to avoid soiling the laten and impairment of subseuent recor s. Not only arethe lowermost aces of the manifolding sets clean, but the upper, or outer, faces are also clean, the ransfer material being confined to between the leaves, so that the three associated leaves or the three associated strips may readily be handled without soiling the fingers with the carbon transfer material. Furthermore the spotted leaves may also be readily handled with the separation ,of one.
Without soiling the fingers because the spots 4 of transfer material cover but a portion of the area of the leaves, thereby leaving a large and clean margin on each leaf. The
arrangement whereby either the connected' leaves forming the strips or the leaves of the I separate sets may readily be handled without soiling the fingers, is of much value even aside from the adhering feature of the transfer material. Hence, viewed in this aspect, the invention contemplates the use of .transfer material independent of its adhering quality.
In practice each of the several strips is provided with a longitudinal series of the similar printed forms l0, these forms being pertinent to the transaction of which record is to be made.
An ordinary bill form has been illustrated.
The strips are then folded and assembled in the manner hereinbcfore described and as more particularly appears diagrammatically in Fig. l, to form a flat pad as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig.
3. The topmost set of leaves of this pad set in the pad are originally disposed in suc manner that the forms and apertures thereof are in as close registry as possible. The
close association of' the interfolded strips in 1 the pad tends to maintain this registry, and when the sets are drawn from the pad the associated lbends of the strips also tend to maintain the registry and to restrain relative movement between the advancing leaves of a manifolding set. The spots of adhesive tend to restrain relatransfer material also tive movement between the leaves and at the same time provide areas in each-set whereon manifolding inscription may be effected. Should manifold inscription -be desired in unspotted areas on the leaves, the separate carbon transfer leaves of the machine may be utilized for the purpose. After inscription inthe machine, Whether by hand or by instrumentalities which may be provided in the machine, the inscribed set may be severed from the next succeeding set along the weakened lines 'intermediate the two sets. Manifolding inscription may be `made on this torn-off set Within the spotted area and without the use of additional transfer leaves. Furthermore it will be noted that the spotted areas are illustrated as longitudinally in line with the form registering apertures?P i machine, preparatory being torn off. In
