A. WAGNER V FOLDING CHAIR Filed July 19, 1927 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS 50 rear legs, preferably by provi Patented Aug. 13, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANIJREW WAGNER, OF UNION CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO FERGUSON BROS. MFG. (30., OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY..
FOLDING CHAIR.
Application filed July 19,
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts of a folding chair structure whereby the chair will be very simple, strong and comact. P My invention comprises a folding chair having a pair of front legs, a pair of rear legs and a seat slidably engaged wlth the rear legs, a metal reinforcing bar being provided for pivotally connecting the seat to the front legs, said reinforcing bar being so shaped as to permit the rear legs to be folded between the sides of the seat and the adjacent 1 front legs of the chair, said reinforcing bar being preferably a flat metal bar having lateral ears at the ends thereof provided with studs pivoted in the front legs.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which F ig. 1 represents a front view of the chalr inv its unfolded position.
Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line III-III of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a front view of the chair in its folded position.
Fig. 5 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 6 represents a detail vertical section, on a larger scale, taken in the plane of the line VIVI of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 represents a detail horizontal. section, on a larger scale, taken in the plane of the line VIIVII of Fig. 4.
The front legs of the chair are denoted by 1, 1, the rear legs by 2, 23nd the seat by 3. The front legs may be provided with upper and lower cross braces 4 and 5 for rigidly spacing the legs apart, the upper cross brace 4.- serving as a back support.
The rear legs may be rovided with suitable cross braces 6, 6. The upper ends of the rear legs are pivoted to the front legs at corresponding points above the seat 3 as,
for instance, by providing studs 7, 7 extending through the upper ends of the rear legs and the adjacent portions of the front legs.
The seat 3 is slidably engaged with the ing the back been passed through the 1927. Serial No. 206,834.
of the seat at its sides with studs 8, 8, the outer ends of which are slidable in elongated grooves 9, 9 in said rear legs.
The seat is pivoted to the front legs as follows:
A metal reinforcing bar 10, preferably a flat-metal bar, extends across and is secured to the bottom of the seat and projects beyond the sides of the same, the ends of the bar being turned laterally to form ears 11, 11 adjacent the inner sides of the front legs, which ears may be provided with studs 12, 12 secured thereto, which studs pass through the front legs and form a pivotal support therefor. Suitable wearing washers 13, 14 and 15 may be mounted on the studs. It will be understood that after the studs have front legs and washers, the outer ends of the studs may be upset to tie the front legs together.
By spacing the lateral ears 11, 11 of the reinforcing bar 10 from the sides of the seat 3, ample room is provided for permitting the rear legs to be folded between the sides of the seat and the adjacent front -le s.
By providing this metal rein orcing bar as the means for pivoting the seat to the front legs, I am enabled to produce a very strong and rigid yet, light connection between the seat and front legs.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to be 85 limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. In a folding chair, legs,
0 a pair of front a pair of rear legs pivoted thereto, a
seat slidably engaged with the rear legs, and
a flat metal reinforcing bar extending across the bottom of the seat, the ends of the bar having lateral ears pivoted to the front legs.
2. In a folding chair, a pair of front legs, a pair of rear legs pivoted thereto, a seat slidably engaged with the rear legs, and a flat metal reinforcing bar extending across the bottom of the seat, the ends of the bar having lateral ears pivoted to the front legs, 1'00 said lateral ears being spaced from the sides of the seat to permit the rear legs to be folded between the sides of the seat and the adjacent front legs.
3. In a folding chair, a pair of front legs, a 'pair of rear legs ivoted thereto, a seat slidably engaged with the rear legs, and a fiat metal reinforcing bar extending across I the bottom of the seat, the ends of the bar having lateral ears provided with studs secured thereto, on which studs the front legs are pivoted.
1 In a folding chair, a pair of front legs, a pair of rear legs pivoted thereto, a. seat slidably engaged with the rear legs, and a 15 flat metal reinforcing bar extending across the bottom of the seat, the ends of the bar having lateral ears provided with studs secured thereto, on which studs the front legs are pivoted, said lateral ears being spaced from the sides of the seat to rmit the rear legs to be folded between t e sides of the seat and the adjacent front legs.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 15th day of July, 1927.
ANDREW WAGNER.
