' This invention relatesto certain novel improvements in a control device and more particularly to a time controlled device such as is used to make or break electrical connections or the like.
The salient object of my invention is to provide a device of a simple and inexpensive construction which may be used to make or break electrical connections or the like at predetermined times.
a An object of my invention, ancillary to the foregoing, is to provide a device in which a so-called alarm clock or the like may be employed.
A further object of the invention is to arrange the device in such a manner that a gravity operated member may be released at predetermined times so as to cause actuation of the device to be controlled by the mechanism.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel com bination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by -reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 on Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail view substantially similar to Fig. 2 in which the mechanisms are connected for operation in a. direction opposite to that of the mechanisms as connected in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective detail View of a connecting member employed in my device.
In the drawings, wherein a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, it may be seen that I provide a housing 10 having an open side which is adapted to be closed by a suitable transparent member such as the window glass 11. Two sides of the housing 10 are arranged so as to provide doors 12 and 13.
The door 12 is arranged so as to permit the introduction of a timing mechanism such as the alarm clock 14 which includes an alarm control key 15. The alarm clock 14 is adapted to be positioned in the housing 10 in such a manner that the face thereof will be directed toward the side of said housing The connecting member is generically indicated at 16 in the drawing and is preferably formed substantially U-shaped. The bight portion 17 of the connecting member 16 has the arms 18 and 19 hingedly connected thereto as indicated at 20 and 21. At the outer ends of the arms 18 and 19, openings 22 and 23 are provided. At a point. in the extent of the arm 18 a tongue 24 is struck therefrom and at a suitable point in the arm 19 an opening 25 is provided. When in operative position the openings 22 and 23 are adapted to be disposed around the key 15 and the tongue 24 is directed through the opening 25. An opening 26 is provided in the tongue 25 and a pin 27 is suitably connected to the arm 19 by a flexible member 28. After the tongue 21 has been extended through the opening 25, the pin 27 is inserted through the opening 26 and thus the tongue 24 is held against displacement from the opening 25 and thus the connecting mem ber 16 is connected to the alarm key 15.
At a pointbest illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, a bar 29 is secured to the bottom of the housing 10. Mounted so as to be slidable along the bar 29 is a strip 30 which has a plurality of openings 31 provided therein. In the bight portion 17 of the connecting member 16 a suitable element 32 is mounted as by the nuts 33 and the element 32 includes a hook portion 34:. After the connecting member 16 has been connected to the alarm key 15 the alarm clock 14 is positioned in the housing 10 and the element 32 is inserted through one of the openings 31 so as to be held in a substantially horizontal position. Inasmuch as alarm clocks are made in various sizes and types, I have arranged the strip 30 so as to be adjustable transversely along the bar 29 and by providing a plurality of openings 31 in the strip 30, I have provided a construction which will afford proper support for the connecting member 16 even though the alarm key 15 is mounted on the clock 14 at varied heights.
On the upper side of the housing 10 'a suit able bracket 35 is mounted which is adapted to rotatably support a pulley 3 6. A chain 37 is directed around the pulley 36 and includes ring elements 38 and 39 at the ends thereof. A weight 40 is adapted to be connected to the chain 37 as by having the hook 41 thereof inserted through the ring element 39. In the present instance, I have shown an electric switch structure generically indicated at 42 which includes a movable switch blade 43. A suitable connecting element 44 connects the chain'37 to the switch blade 43.
When the device is to operate in the manner disclosed in Fig. 2, a ring element 38 is disposed below the hook element 34 which is arranged so as to be directed downwardly as disclosed in Fig. 1. The chain 37 is directed around the pulley 36 and the connecting element it connects this portion of the chain'to the switch blade l3 and the weight 40 is also connected to this portion of the chain. Therefore when the alarm clock operates to release the alarm key, said key will rotate and therefore the connecting member 16 will also rotate which-will cause the hook element 3 l'to be directedupwardly. Inasmuch as the weight 40 will be acting on the chain 37 when the hook element 3 1 is disposed upwardly the ring element 38 will be slipped therefrom which will permit the weight l0 to act which will cause the chain 37 to travel downwardly and thus the switch blade 43 will be moved downwardly to open the circuit.
In Fig. 3 I have disclosed the device as being connected for closing the switch 42'.
In this instance the ring element 3.9 is con-- nected to the hook element 345 and the weight 40 is connected to the portion of the chain carrying the ring element 38. When the hook element 34 rotates to release the ring 39 the weight 40 moves downwardly'and thus causes the switch blade 43 to be moved upwardly and thus close the circuit. In use, the alarm would then be set for the time it was desired to vopen the circuit and the mechanism would be connected in the manner disclosed in Fig.2 and thus at the desired time the circuit would be opened. Then by re-setting the alarm and connecting the parts as shown in Fig. 3, the device would be used to again close the circuit.
It is apparent from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and inexpensive construction which will efficiently act to open or close an electric circuit. It is to be understood however that the device might be used for other purposes such as to open and close valves or the like. It is also apparent that I have provided a construction which will permit the employment of so-called alarm clocks and I have arranged the device in such a manner that a clock of any style or size may be employed.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capablev of variation and modification, without depart ing from the spirit of the invention. I, i
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as'come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a clock having. a rotatable member adapted to be rotated at predetermined times, 'a substantially U- shaped connecting member having the arms thereof pivotally connected to the bight por tion thereof, said arms having openings in the ends thereof to receive said rotatable member, means for locking said arms in engagement with said rotatable member, and
' means carried by said connecting member for controlling operation of an actuating device.
2. In combination with 'a clock having a rotatablemember adapted to be rotated at predetermined times, a substantially U- shaped connecting member having the arms thereof pivotally' connected to the bight portion thereof, said arms having openings in .the ends thereof to receive said rotatable member, means for locking said arms in en the bight portion of said connecting member to extend through one of said openings, said member having a hook element mounted thereon to releasably retain an actuating 5 member in operative position.
