Aug. 6, 1929. J. J. SAUNDERS AUTOMATIC FORCE FEED LUBRICAT'ING ATTACHMENT Filed Sept. 26, 1921 John amps,
2 u? 2 mu \Q n lllkL 1|:
, is R 4l forl the reception of a tubular nipple.
The piston 39 is operated by steam from the chest 6. The operation of the attachment, for the purpose of feeding the lubricant, is timed by the valve 8, and corresponds with the stroke of the piston 2 in the cylinder 1. It will be assumed that steam is supplied to the chamber 22, through the line 13 and will force piston 39 towards the nipple 34 and which forces steam from the cylinder 22 through the line 14 to the chest 6. The exhaust from the chamber 22 is connected to the exhaust of the engine by the position of valve 7 As piston 38 is connected to piston 39 by'a pin 40, piston 38 will be carried in the same direction as piston 39 and the oil within the chamber 21 is forced out through the line 16 and into the chest 6 and where it is carried with steam through port 3 into the piston chamber 5. When the pistons 38 and 39 are moving in the direction as stated, the check valve 31 is closed whereby that end of the cylinder 21 which communicates with the chest 6 through the medium of the line 15 is closed to the-chest. When piston 38 is at the end of its stroke, it clears port 24 and oil enters into chamber 21 due to partial vacuum therein. When the pistons 38 and 39 move in the opposite direction, lubricant will enter chamber 21 through port 25 as the latter will be open.
The nipples 33, 34 in connection with the sockets 41, actas cushioning means for the stroke of the piston 39 whereby it is preventedfrom climbing against the ends ofthe chamber 22. The pockets or sockets 41 inthe piston 39 fit over the nipples 33, 34 and trap the exhauststeam between piston face and end of cylinder thereby setting up a cushioning action for piston 39.
When the pistons 38 and 39 move in a directiontowards the lines 14 and 16 lubricant is supplied to the steam chest and from there it passes through the port 3 into the piston chamber 5 and when the pistons 38, 39 are moved towards the lines 13, 15 lubricant is supplied into the steam chest and from there it. passes through the port 4 into the chamber 5. The lubricant when passing into the engme cylinder mixes with the steam, as it is conducted through the same ports or passages through which passes the steam to the chamber 5.
The action of the attachment is automatic and provides for a thorough lubrication of the piston 2, as well as the valve 8, and therefore it is thought the many advantages of a lubricating attachment, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and
