Description

s. BOONE. CROSS-OUT SAW-HANDLE.
Patented Jan.18.1876'.
No.17Z,381.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL BOONE, OF LA GRO, INDIANA.
IMPROVE MENT IN ROSSCUT -SAW HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,381, dated Jannary 18, 1876 application filed November 27, 1875.
T0 all whom lt may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BOONE, of La Gro, in the connty of VVabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and nsefnl Improvement in Orosscnt-Saw Handles, of which the following is a specifioation:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved sawhandle as attached to the saw. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 0, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a side view of the saw, showing recesses for attaching handles.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved mode of attaching saw-handles to the saw and it consists of a ferrule, with a perforated rubber -block in the closed end thereof, a saw-binding clamp-piece, which is securely attached to the handle by a binding-blook, witl1 saw-fastening clamps, and a shank Witll threaded end that extends into a perforation of the handle to be screwedthereon. A rnbbcr cushion and washer at the bottom of the ferrule prodnces the secnre attaohment of handle to ferrule and block. The saw is recessed both at the back and side edge to apply the handle longitudinally, or at right angles to the saw.
In the drawing, A represents the handle, Which is made of any snitable shape to be attached to the saw B by a ferrule, 0, and looking-block D at the end of the ferrule. The saw-handle A is fitted into the cylindrical ferrnle O, wbich is cast or otherwise made with a slotted cla1n p-piece, C, and longitudinal fiange a that bind on the rear edge of the saw. A projection, b, of the olamppiece C fits into a corresponding recess, b at the side edge of the saw, and producee thereby the rigid position of the ferrnle on the end of the saw. The binding-block D is provided With a similar slotted clamp-piece, D, that enters by a central angular lip or projection, d, into a corresponding recess, (1, at the rcar or top edge of the saw. Recesses I) and 61 are fnrthermore ont into the side and top edges of the saw, at the same distance, respectively, from the 001- ner of the same as the recesses b and d for the pnrpose of applying the handle in longitudinal direction, or at right angles to the saw, as the saine is to he used for horizontal or verticalsawing. Thebindinghlock 0 is provided with a shank, F, that passes through a central perforation of ferrnle, O, longitudinally into the handle which is screwed on the threaded end of the shank, to secnre thereby the rigid locking of handle, ferrnle, and block. A rubber cnshion, 6, and washerf'are interposed between the end of the handle and bottom of the ferrnle, for the pnrpose of holding the handle firmly in position, atter having been sorewed tightly on the shank, and preventing any shaking or looseness of the han dle. A smal ler ferrnle, g, extends over the end of the frrnle 0 at the point where the handle enters the same, and gives addition al strength at the point to Whioh also the screw shank extends inside of the handle. By screwixig the handle tightly on the shank the bloc]; D looks not only handle, ferrnle, and
'block firmly together, but seonres, at the same time, the clamp-pieoes rigidly to the end of the saw, producing thereby a strong and effective fastening of the handle to the saw in either direction.
Having thus desoribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of handle A and rubber cushion 6 with the ferrulc C, having slotted clamp-flange C a I), and the bindizng-block D, having slotted clamp D, lip d, and threaded shank E, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL BOONE. Witnesses:
