To the shaft 24 are secured a pair of drivu ing or friction disks 29 and 30 adapted to engage with the under surface of the lower strip 8 of the material being fed 1through the machine. It will be noted that the mutilated gear has a dwell section thereof free of teeth on the pitch line of the gear, this ysection being adapted to cooperate with a toothless portion of the mutilated gear 23. It will be apparent that when the dwell portion engages with the member 39 the gear 23 will not be rotated, but that when ,the teeth of the gear 22 engages with the teeth of the gear 23, the former will drive the latter. ln the specific construction il lustrated, the gear 22 is adapted to drive the gear 23through two revolutions for one revolution of the gear 23. For the purpose of permitting this, the gear 22 has a toothless portion 40 similar in construction to the dwell section 3S to properly cooperate with the member 39 When it is brought to a position midway of the length of the series of teeth on the gear 22. i
Tie means for initially feeding the strips of paper comprises a friction or cam member 4l having a short peripheral surface 42 so located that when the shaft 24 is started to operate, the surface 42 will press against the under surface of the strips and by means of the friction thereof with the strip will initiate the feeding movement of the strips as is clearly shown in Figure l of the drawings. Abovethe strips of material is rotatably supported a knurled roll43 having suitable bearings 44 and 45 secured to extensions 46 and 47.0f the side walls 16 and 28. The cam member 4l is secured to the shaft 24 intermediate the ends thereof, and at one end of the shaft 24 is secured a gear 4S meshing with a gear 49 secured to the shaft 50 of the roll 43, for the purpose of positively Vfeeding the strips. After the member 41 has passed from the position shown in Figure l and after initiating the movement of the strips, further feeding is effected by die frictional engagement of the disks 29 and 30 f With the under sheet or strip and the drive through the gears 48 and 49 and the roll 43 acting upon the upper strip of the group.
For the purpose of bringing the strips to a stop at the proper point, the strips are provided with perforations ll and l2 at given intervals throughout the length of the strips. lVhen any of the perforations, such as perforations l2 arrive between the roll 43 and the disks 29 and 30, a hook 5l carried Yby an arm 52 pivotally supported upon a pin 53yseeured to a side Wall of the easing, Will move upwardly into the perforations under the action of a spring 57 connected to a fixed part of the casing top 9 and an arm 53 rigidly secured to the arm 52 as clearly shown in Figures l and 2 of the drawings. rlhe hooks 5l will then act to prevent further movement of the strips and inasmuch as the peripheries of the disks 29 and 3l) now operate into the space of the perforations, there is no tractive elfeet upon the strips and therefore the disks 29 and 30 will not effect or tend to eli'eet a feeding movement thereof. The roller i3, if continued operation thereof is effected, will merely rotate idly over the top strip without ell'ecting a feed thereof.
Upon the shaft 24 is also secured a cani 59 adapted to engage with the arm 53, as clear ly shown in Figure l of the drawings, to dcpress the saine and hence to release the hook l from the perforations in the strips. The action of this cam will occur at the time when the cam member 4l is brought into eugagement with the under side of the lower strip when the initiating of the feeding is to be effected. ln other words, the hook 5l is released justprior to the initiating feeding action of the cam 4l, as above explained.
rfhe stri )s of paper are so threaded through the mechanism that the lower strip S will pass through a guiding space between members GO, Gl, G2 and 63 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. These members may be secured at their ends in the side walls of the casing. The other strips, such as strips 6 and '7 may pass over the member v(il and to the exterior of the machine where they may be torn ofi' and used asdesired. The lower strip is to be severed at given lengths, and this is effected by a severing means or knife G4 having an upper cutting edge adapted to move upwardly through a cutting space (S5 provided between the niembers (il and (i3 and (S9 and 32. rlhe lowerend of the cutter (34 is adjustably connected to an arm (it pivotally supported upon a cross pin G7 suitably mounted in the side walls of the casing. The cutter arm (SG is normally held against a. cani (58 secured or made rigid with the gear 22, by means of a spring` 7(39 secured at. one end to the arm (i6 and :i t the other end to a fixed part of a side wall of the casing.

The fingers 82 of these arms Will engage with the rear of the severed section Sand move the same from the fullv line position to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. VThis is a kick-off operation so as to release or withdraw the free end of the severed section from the guiding membersl 62 and 63. At this point of operation the cut-ter 64 shall have moved downwardly to its original position. As the member 7 6 slips oft of the end of the member 77, the spring 84 will immediately retract the members 81 to the full line position shown in Figure 2. The severed section will then fall horizontally into the positions shownthereof in Figure l of the drawings which show three sections already in filed position on the filing pins 87. The gear 22 shall now have passed through its dwell period and its teeth will again engage with the gear 23 and start the movement of the shaft 24 so as to bring the cam 59 against the arm 5S so as to release the hooks 5l from the perforations and cause the cam il to initiate a feeding` movement by contact with the under side of the lower strip of the group of strips being fed. Further operation will be similar to that already explained.
From the description given, it will be un; derstood that as the strips are being fed over theplaten, the advance end of the lowermost strip being discharged is deflected downwardly into the inner end-portion of the tiling compartment, and the filing pins are caused to protrude vthrough the advance end of the strip-portion, or triplicate sales-slip; and, as the opera-tion continues, the impaling pins of the filing device serve to guide the advance endA of the slip downwardly; and, at the proper time, the slip-overturning device comprising the arm 81 operates to bring t-he lat eral extensions 82 into engagement with the back side of the slip and effect the positive over-ending of the sales-slip and the proper. deposit thereof, in inverted position, upon the accumulating stack of slips, it being understood that the slip being filed is, at the proper time, severed from the body of the strip. The invention, in the broadest aspect of this phase, contemplates suitable means for effecting severance of the. slip, or slips, to be filed and overturning and depositing the slips in the filing compartment, thus gainingv the advantage of al stack of inverted slips which has been noted above; and, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, thus stated` which is described in the present application, a device is provided which automatically engages the back side 0f the slip to be tiled at a distance rfrom the impaling pins and effects the positive kick-over of the slip, insuring the deposit of the slip in flat condition upon the accumulating stack of slips.
lVhile, in the embodiment shown, provision is made for tiling the lowermost strip, the invention is not limited thereto.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but tlvy appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
Having thus disclosed my invention, lV claim:
l. In a device of the character set forth, a platen, means for feeding` strips thereover, an impaling pin adapted to impale the advance end of a strip from the face side, severing means, and movable means adapted to engage and overturn the iinpaled section.
2. In a device of the character set forth, in combination with a platen and means for feeding strips thereover, an impaling pin adapted to extend through the advance end of a stri-p from the face thereof, and means for engaging the back surface of the inipaled section and effecting positive overturning and deposit of said section in the filing compartment.
3. In a device of the character set forth, in combination with aY platen and means for feeding strips thereover, means for deflecting the advance end of a strip downwardly into the inner end-portion of the tiling compartment, an impaling pin adapted to be protruded through the advance end of said strip from the face side thereof, automatically actuated means for actuating said impaling pin, and automatically actuated means adapted to engage the back face of the deflected section and effect positive overturning and depositing thereof.
4. In an autographic register' comprising a web receiving platen, a source of web lsupply for the platen, means for feedingthe web over and beyond the platen, a .tiling device adapted to receive and tile the portions o the web as they are projected beyond the platen, and a web severing device operatively connected with the feeding means, adapted to cut each projected portion of the web from its source of supply after the projected portion has been engaged b v the tiling device.
5. An autographic register comprising a web receiving platen, a source of web supplv for the platen, means for adjusting the platen supported portion of the web relativclv to the platen, means for feeding the web over and beyond the platen and to condition it for adjustment by said adjusting means, a tiling device adapted to receive and to file the portions of the web projected beyond the platen, and a web severing device operatively connected with the feeding device, adapted to cut each projected portion of the web from its source of supply after the feeding operation has been completed, cessation of the feeding operation permitting the previously lll)
