THOMAS J. LEWIS, OF NEW YORIL N. Y.
HAND BAG WITH COSMETIC FOLDERS.
Application filed September 8, 1928. Serial No. 304,670.
The object of the present invention is to provide a hand bag, in appearance generally similar to bags customarily carried by women for daily use, and which comprises as an integral part a cosmetic folder so arranged that when the folder is w1thdrawn from the bag and spread out with the cosmetic ars or other holders exposed, 1t 1s tied to the bag and the latter prevents the holder from being vibrated from a polished shelf or the like, as when the device is being used on a moving conveyance, for example in the ladies room of a Pullman coach, etc.
The invention will be described. with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of the device with the folder drawn outwardly for position and use;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device closed;
Figure 3 is a transverse section on the line 33, Fig. 2, and
Figure 4 is an end view of the device.
Referring to the drawings 1 indicates the body of the bag having a cover orflap 2, a strap 3 being provided, the strap having at one end a loop 3* and at the opposite end a buckle 1 through which the loop may be passed, providing a convenient means of holding the bag in that the hand may be passed through the loop and the bag held at the base thereof by the hand, insuring that the flap or cover will remain in closed position. The bag is preferably made of soft material, as for example leather. It is formed with a rigid two- part frame 5, 5", the two parts of the frame being hinged at 6. One member of the frame provided with. a catch device 7 and the other member with a. co-acting catch device 8. A short finger strap 9 may be carried by frame member 5 as a convenient aid to the unlatching of the two frame members. In the present instance there is located within the bag a purse 10 having a customary form of springand ball catch 11.
When the soft cover 14 is moved back upon the boarded member and is snapped in position, the said member may be pushed down into the compartment rearwardly of frame member 5*, band 12 folding into position within the compartment, and thereafter the primary cover flap 2 of the bag may be folded over to permit closing of the bag by the strap and buckle device.
As seen in Figure 2, the bag with its cover affords a broad support for the boarded member with the supplementary cover 14, and notwithstanding the boarded member is an integral part of the bag, the cosmetics are placed, as to their containers, in a most convenient position for utilization.
It will be noted that glass bottles or other frail containers may be safely used in the device inasmuch as at one side of the case they are protected by the folds of material secured to the frame members 5, 5 and in addition the material comprising the inner purse, whereas at the op )osite face the said containers are protected y the stiff boarded member 13 in addition to the rear wall of the bag.
It will be understood that modifications maybe made in the form and arrangement of the elements comprising the device, without departing from the spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent being as followsz- 1. A hand bag comprising a hinged frame covered with flexible material and forming a major compartment member having opposed walls, a cover flap, a supplemental compartment provided intermediate the said walls and the cover flap, a boarded carrier disposed in the supplemental compartment, a flexible band connecting the boarded member and the bag, and adapted to be folded within the supplemental compartment, holding-devices carried by the boarded member for a plurality of cosmetic jars, the boarded member being disposed within the supplemental compartment in such manner that the cosmetic jars are shielded on one side by the boarded member and a wall of the bag, and at the opposite side by the opposed walls of the bag.
2. A hand bag comprising a hinged frame covered with flexible material and forming a major compartment member having opposed walls, an inner purse secured within the compartment, a cover flap, a supplemental compartment provided intermediate the said walls and the cover flap, a boarded carrier disposed in the supplemental. conipartment, a flexible band connecting the boarded member and the bag, and adapted to be folded within the su'pplementat compartmenL holding-devices carried by the boarded nicmber for a plurality of cosmetic jars, a flexible cover carried by the boarded member and means for holding the cover in position to overlap said jars, the boarded member being disposed within the supplemental compartment in such manner that the cosmetic jars are shielded on one side by the boarded member and a wall of the bag, and at the opposite side by the opposed walls of the bag and said inner purse.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
THOMAS J. LEWIS.
