Slidably .mounted on the bilurcated end ot the shank and enclosingr the jaws l: is a jaw actuating' sleeve 8. By moving the sleeve upwardly, the lower or bit receivinglr portion ot the jaws are openedj whereas by movingthe sleeve downwardly said jaws are closed upon the end or head ot the bit. '.l he

Mounted upon the shank l, above the sleeve 8, is a sccoinl sleeve '14, which is preferably formed with a cyliinlrical bore l5 terminatingr is a eapiare bore i6, at its lower end torining1 shoulders 17. 18 indicates a, pin cxtending transversely through the shank l, and arranged within the bore l5. Inter-posed between the pin 1S and the shoulders 1.7 is a coiled spring 19, which norn'ially tends to force the sleeve, ll downwarly. 20 indicates a stop for liniiting the downward movenient of the sleeve 14.

the lower ends of which are pivotally connected as at 27 to the levers 22, preterably adjacent the pivot 2l. The arrangement is such that when the levers are thrown into the position shown in full lines in Fig. l, the pivot 27 will pass beyond the line of centers between the pivots 2l and 25, thereby lockingl the device against accident-al displacement of the lever and loosening of the jaws.
It is obvious that with a device ot this construction bits olf various sizes may be inserted and securely held within the jaws` rl`o open the jaws for the insertion or removal of a lit, the lever is sw un g downwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. The sleeve llt will then be in engagement with the stop 2t) and through the medium of the links 2G the sleeve S will be raised into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and in lull lines in Fig. This forces open the lower ends of the jaws l. lVhen the bit is inserted the lever is swung' upwardly int-o the position shown in full lines in Fig. l. This forces the sleeve S downwardly until the jaws ti glitly grasp the bit head or shank. Further movement of the lever will then force the sleeve 14 upwardly Itis obvious that bits of any size may be held, the only difference bennal that the larger the bit the less movement is required to close the jaws upon the same and greater movement ot the sleeve ll will be required to compensate for the lesser movement ot the sleeve S.
I claim:
l. lin a device oit the class described a shank, a pair o't jaws on the shank, a sleeve slidahle on the shank and adapted to open and close said jaws, a. second sleeve mounted on said shank, a lever pivotally connected to the lirst mentioned sleeve, a link pivotallv conneeted at one end to said second mentioned sleeve, the opposite end ol' said iin; henna' pivotally connected to said lever, and a sprin associated with the second mentioned sleeve adapted to exert tension on said link when the device is in jaw closing position, substantially as described.
2. A device as set forth in claim l, in which the pivotal connection between the link and the lever is eccentric to the pivot ol' the lever. whereby said connection will pass hel ween the line oi centers olf the connections between the link and he lever and their respective sleeves, when the lever is moved into jaw closingt positiven, substantially as described.
