Description

Aug. 6, 1929. E. G. EmcKsoN SURF BOARD Filed July 17, 1928 Inventor l. G. Zrzckrow,
By M Attorney Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERICK G. ERICKSON, OF ALEXANDRIA, MINNESOTA.
SURF BOARD.
Application filed July 1'7,
The present invention relates to a surf board and has for its prime object to provide a board of this nature provided with an air chamber so as to make the same non'sinkable.
A further important object of the invention resides in the provision of a surf board of this nature which exceedingly simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and. diniahle, and thoroughly cliicient and reliable for the purpose intended.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device ,of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, lllGXPGDSlVG, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the surf board embodying the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section there through, and
Figure 3 is a transverse section there through.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes an elongated or oblong board 'n-efcrab ly of flat construction. An air chamber is formed at the front end of the board by providing an elongated strip of sheet metal 6 extemling from an intermediate portion of the top surface of the board 5 adjacent the front end thereof forwardly and inclining upwardly and forwardly and then bent over upon themselves as at 7 downwardly and curved and secured to the under surface of the front end and the sides of the air chamher are completed by wooden plates 8.
Gross pieces 9 and 10 are provided on the board, the former at the rear end and the latter at the front end. The air chanr hers thus formed make the surf board run 1928. Serial No. 293,447.
sinkable. This air chamber preferably covered with sheet metal as explained, and the balance of the board is wood, the sides of the air chamber are also preferably of wood.
I do not care, however, to limit myself to the material mentioned.
This board will hold a person in the water the same as a life saver. In case the rope should break a person would be left without any protection with the ordinary surf board but this boa rd will. hold the person up until they could be ires-lcued.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail m irely for the purposes of exemplilication since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of constructiom and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
A surf board comprising a flat oblong body plate, a float including an arcuate lower wall secured at its rear end to the lower face of the plate at the front end there of and projecting :l'forwardly and upwardly therefrom, an upwardly bowed top wall. connected with the forward edge of the lower wall and extending rearwardly and over the upper face of the body plate and secured thereto, and relatively heavy side walls received between the top and bottom walls and secured thereto, the top and bottom walls at their point of connection defining a short transversely extending meeting edge.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ERICK G. ERICKSON.
