BED-EXTENSION SPEPRT FOR DAVENYORTS.
Application led'November 23, 192'?. Serial No.k 235,233.
The present yinvention relates to davon`r ports and has for an object to provide a bed extension for the same including supporting means it'or the extension when arranged in sleeping position and also' including` guide means for the extension permn ing thosame to be easily and quickly moved .into lposition beneath the davenport for arranging the same in normal position.
A still further Objectl is to provide a sup.,
porting means for the bed extension cooper-y atingfwith the guide means designed fory moving the extension into rits normal and extended position, said supporting,` means being `adapted for collapsing' movement and when moved into its collapsed position Operates also to initially move the bed extension along the guide in a direction for returning the extension to its normal position. i
A still further object is to provide a device i of this character of simple and practical construct-ion, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively iny-v expensive to .manufacture and install .in Operative position and otherwise well adapted. to the purposes for which the same yis intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in thespeeial construction and combination of the various elements comprising the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawinggforming a part hereof, wherein: f f Figure 1 is view in front elevation ot a davenport embodyingr my invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse vert-ical sectional View taken substantially along a line 2-2 of I have shown my invention adapted for usey in connection with a davenport 5 of conventional construction h avingI a cushion y(i of the usual type disposed thereon. the davenport beneath the cushion 6 are prei niovement oi? the rod 17.
The ends .et
kerably ot a solid construction as shown at and upon the inner face of which is arrarl jed a guide plate 8 extending rearwardly of the davenport. The front of the davenport beneath the cushion 6 is open as indicated at 9 in Figure 3 of the drawing, the forward edge of each of the side boards 7 haring shoulders 10 formed thereon extendingfin a direction across the front of the davenport adyacent the Opening 9 in they ,iront thereof.
Each of the plates 8 are provided Wit-h slotted openings; constitutingguides 11, the rear portion ot' the guides being horizontally disposed terminating' at their yforward ends yinto an upwarifllycurved section 12, the upper portion of which extends rearwardly for a slight distance at ahoriZont-al plane.
. '.lhe guides 11 are adapted to receive a flanged roller 13 for movement therein, said roller beine; mounted upon a rearwardly extendina` arm 1.4i of a plate member 15 attached to the under side of ra bed extension The plate member 15 constitutes a housing for a slid ably mounted rod 17 having its rear end protrudingr from the rear ofthe bed section with a head 18 formed thereon. The forward end of the rod 17 is attachedv to one end of a link 19 having its Opposite end connected intermediate the end of a sup- 'Is y port 20, one end of said support being pivkotally attached as at Q1 to the forward lower edeje of the bed extension 16 with the opposite en dthereot arranged to extend downwardly vlrrnn the extension so as to support the same in a manner as illustrated in Figure 34 of the drawing.
f yAt the forward lower edge of the cushion 6 adjacent eaclrend thereof is `arranged a plate 22 havingr a recess 23 yformed therein with a downwardltr depending shoulder '24 arranged across the upper edge ot' the recess and adapted to engage the inner edge of the rhead. 18, atter the saine has been `fitted therein, whereby to prevent the withdrawal ofA the head from the plate upon the horizontal The recesses open toward the iront of the davenport and permit the rods 17 to extend therefrom when the head 18 is disposed therein. K
llVith the parts assembled in position as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, it will be apparent that the said extension 16 will .force the head 18 inwardly by reason of. its:
connection through the rod 17 with the link 19, which.A thereby operates to force the eX- tension'A lloutwardly: with respectto itsassocia-tions withthe cushion 6 untill the roller 13 reaclieszthe curved section 1-2foft-lie: guide whereupon` the' weight. offthe extension` 16 willfcause thelroller 18 to move downwardly and inwardly along.A the guide 11 towardtlie rearfofthe davenporti At the same time: it
willbeobvious that the-V head18-will be released from the recess-23 in. the plate 22soy as not to interfere with the inward movement of the said extension 16.1
Upon the movement of the extension under the cushionz of. thedavenport in a.: position; as: shown in Figure 2 ofthe drawings5 .the,forwardiedge of the extension 1G will'restupon the shoulder-1.0,' thus enabling" the extensiontobe supportedabove the floor. when.y arranged iny itsinnerV position. v When desiiangitofinove the eXte-nsion outwardly into its outermost posit-ion, thefront edge` is. pulledzi. outwardly with. the.. roller 131 supportingetlierear edgelin position.y for riding in the guide 11. end 'Q of;Y they extension;
y It is; apparent .that .the shape of; the guidev its forward?l end may be altered`r` ini various ways and still. obtain the desired;
results"- afndfI do: not wish; tolimitf the: invention; to any. particular shape on construction'in` thisrespect'.l Also` the plate.member` lmayA be: constructed as: an integralpart of.' the :b'ottomof the extension. 16,:,if desired, any'suitable` means :for slidably mounting fthe rod:y 17 being employed, 'Illiel arin 14?- may beconstructed as apartof the plate orfseparate therefrom.
It is 1 obvious that the. invention'. issusceptibleof various other.V changes and medie.V
