IMPROVEMENT lN PRESSURE-ROLL SHIELDS FOR PLANlNG-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,293, dated January 18, 1876; application filed November 10, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HALSEY H. BAKER, of Plainfield, in Union county and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Pressure-Roll Shields for Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification: 1

In all planing-machines using a pressure roller to keep the stud flat on the table where it emerges from the action of the surfacingcutter trouble has been experienced from the chips passing under the roller and marring the dressed surface of the lumber. Many devices have been used to remedy this evil, principally by blowing apparatus; but these have only proved partially successtul, besides being objectionable in other respects.

The object of my invention is to provide a sure means of overcoming the difficulty; and it consists in the application of a guard having a flexible edge, and pivoted in the journal-boxes of the pressure-roller, so as to rise in unison with said roller.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a section of a pressure-roller with my shield applied. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same, and Fig.3 an elevation, as seen from the cutter end of the machine.

The same letters appearing on the several figures indicate like parts.

A represents the bed of a planingmachine;

.B, the pressure-roller; G, the pillar-blocks; D,

the journal-boxes; E, the caps; G, the setscrews for adjusting the pressure, and H a piece of board being operated on. To the journal-boxes D I hinge or pivot a metallic guard, cover, or shield, I, of semi-cylindrical form, concentric with the pressure-roller B, passing from said pivots over the roller toward the cutter'head and nearly to the surface of the stuff being dressed, and to this free edge I secure, by screws a, or in any other suitable manner, a strip of leather, L, or other flexible material, which rides, by the weight of the metallic portion I of the cover, on the surface of the board, and efiectually removes the shavings and chips from before the roller. This strip of leather should be slotted where the fastening-screws a pass through it to admit of adjustment, to compensate for wear on its edge. In order to prevent the metallic portion of this shield from coming in contact with the top of the pressure-roller I insert a pin, 0, in the upper pant of the journal-box at each end, and over the axes of the pressureroller, for the shield to rest upon when the board being planed passes from under it, or when the flexible edge is worn away to an extent requiring its downward adjustment.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V The guard I L, pivoted to the journal-boxes D, and covering the pressure-roller B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
