Description
J. BILAN MULT'IVANE AEROPLANE Filed Feb. 23, 1928 July 30, 1929.
2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR.
244. AERONAUTICS Patented July 30, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BI'LAN, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
MULTIVANE AEROPLANE.
Application filed February 23, 1928. Serial No. 256,299.
This invention relates to improvements in vane aeroplane and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a plane 1n which a plurality of wings or planes tiltably arranged in suitable openings of the roof and bottom of the fuselage are so connected that they may be simultaneously tilted at an angle to said roof and bottom to either facilitate the ascent or the descent of the aeroplane.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a multi-vane aeroplane having a plurality of compartments for crew, passengers and apparatus.
A further object of my mventlon is the provision of a multi-vane aeroplane equipped with a plurality of motors adapted to operate a multitude of propellers arranged in channels between roof and bottom of the fuselage.
A still further object of my 1I 1VeI11310I1 is the provision of an aeroplane equlpped w1th a detachable landing gear.
These and other objects of my lnvention will become more fully known as the description proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, formlng a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a multivane aeroplane constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevat1on thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional end view of the plane.
As illustrated my improved mult -vane aeroplane comprises a fuselage, 1O 1n the shape of a housing in which a plural ty of compartments 11 and 12 are formed in Juxtaposition for the reception of crew, passengers and operating apparatus. The upper part of the walls of these compartments are curved as indicated at 13 and 14 and are provided with windows 15, while the roof 16 has a multitude of openings 17 formed therein arranged in sets of parallel rows.
In each of said openings a plane or wing 18 is tiltably arranged about an axle 19. The bottom 20 of the aeroplane has also a plurality of openings 26 formed therein arranged in sets of parallel rows in which planes or wings 22 are tiltable about axles 23.
Each pair of upper wings 18 and lower wings 22 is connected by cables 24, 25 guided intermediate their ends through suitable eyes of members 26 on shafts 27 carrying arms 28 the ends of which are connected by means of cables 29, 30, or the like with an operating link 31 on a shaft 32 adapted to be turned by means of a hand lever 33 or the like, the operation of which will allow a simultaneous tilting of all the planes or wings into an angle to the fuselage.
A direction rudder 34: is provided as it is customary and adapted to be operated by means of a lever 35 and the intermediary of cables 36 or the like in the usual well known manner.
The aeroplane is propelled by motors 37, arranged in suitable numbers in compartments 11 and 12, and the shafts 38 of these motors carry bevel gears 40 on shafts 41 angularly disposed to the motor shafts and each carrying a plurality of propellers 42 in suitable numbers and having their ends journalled in bearings 43, 4 1 in the fuselage.
The landing and starting gear is represented by a plurality of wheels 45 which are easily detachable from their holding frames 46.
The operation of my improved aeroplane will be entirely clear from the above description and it will be evident that the ascent will be greatly facilitated by tilting the vanes at an angle to the roof and bottom of the plane as illustrated in Figure 2, while a tilting of the vanes in the opposite direction will greatly facilitate a landing.
It is to be understood that I may make such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims in the general arrangement of my aeroplane and in the construction of the minor details thereof without departure from the invention.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an aeroplane of the character described, a frame-like fuselage, windowed cabins in said frame curved upper walls for said cabins, motors in some of said cabins, a plurality of propellers, in said frame operated from said motors to drive the plane, a steering means, a bottom and top on said fuselage, each having a plurality of openings formed therein in parallel sets, a wing tiltably held in each of said openings, cables connecting the wings in the openings of the bottom and the wings in the openings of the top, and a common operating means for the wings to tilt the same at a desired angle to top and bottom for facilitating the ascent and descent of the plane.
2. In a multi-vane aeroplane, a fuselage forming a plurality of compartments in parallel juxtaposed rows, the roof and bottom of each of said compartments having a multitude of openings formed therein, axles in roof and bottom, and Wings tiltably arranged about said upper and lower axles, in the wing center, cables connecting the ends of each corresponding pair of upper and inow.
JOHN BILAN.
