This invention relates to improvementsin hinges for especial adaption for screen doors and the like and which permits ingress and egress from a doorway from either side of the door. y
Another vobject of the invention resides in thevpeculiar construction of the hinged means which allows the door to be held firmly and pivoted at either side of the door and which will swing all the way open as in the usual and ordinary type of single hinges.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the followingnovel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the usual and ordinary type of door frame and 11 the stoop or sill which is also of the usual and well known construction and includes a bevelled portion 12 upon the inner side thereof which is inclined toward the floor of the house while the opposite and outer side of the sill or stoop 11 which is exposed to the weather is substantially flat as illustrated at 13; it is of course obvious that some sort of door is to be used upon this door frame 10 and stoop or sillV 1l and in the showing of my inventiony I employ a'usual and ordinary type of screen door 14. i
My invention. resides in the provision of a plate member 15.which includes a sub stantially inwardly :offset portion 16 upon one side thereof and which is adapted to be secured to the outer side' and adjacent the ends of the door 14 at the bottom and top. Each of these plates 15 have hingedly secured'as at -17 upon both ends thereof and in spaced relation thereon, end portions of hinged plates 18; the opposite ends of these hinged plates 18 include hinges 19 upon ther opposite free end portions thereof-and which are adapted to be secured to the upper and lower ends of the door frame 10. Arranged centrally ofthe widthof the upper portion of the door frame 10 and stoop or sill 11 are braces 2O and 21 respectively which are adapted to receive and ,"engage the lower sides of the hinged plates 18 `thereon and support -the same when-the door is swung open and also in its closed position in order that the screen door 14 will be held against sagging in order that ,the hinges 19 will not be pulled or in any way disengaged from the door frame 10.- It is of course obvious that these hinges 19 may include y'such spring `means therein, not shown, which wil-l be tensioned in directly opposite directions inorder that the, door will be closed automatically-when opened-.in either direction. v l
In the mode of operation of the invention it is manifest that owing to the relative association of the spring hinges 19 to the upper end of the door frame 10 and outer flat side 13 of the stoop vor sill 11 and the relative association of the hinge arms 18 with the spring hinges 19 and the opposite ends of the plates 15 with their supporting means of the braces 2O and 21 respectively, it will be noted and manifest that this screen door 111 may be pushed or pulled upon either side when going in or out of a doorway and swing in such position as the occupant may, desire for egress and ingress through the doorway.
In Figures 6 and 7, I have illustrated a second modification of my invention which is quite similar to the preferred and first modification, including every element of the combination as shown but which also shows such slight departures and arrangements as will be hereinafter more fully described.
This form of my invention contemplates the provision of channeled braces 13a have ing apertured lug members la and l5 extending outwardly from the upper andy lower portion of the braces 13a and upon the opposite ends thereof. -These braces are obviously mounted upon the upper and lower edges of the doo-r vframe l0 while the door 12 in turn is adapted to fit wholly within the door frame l0 `in the manner illustrated in Figure 7.
Mounted in reverse order upon the upper and lower edges of the door l2 are plate members 18CL having offset apertured lug members 19a provided on one of their ends while downwardly extending portions 20 are provided adjacent the opposite ends of the plate members` 182L which terminate in outwardly extending plate members 2l2L which extend outwardly and below the level of the lug members 19a. In order to facilitate the operation of this modification as described, I provide pairs of companion hinge plates 22a4 and 23a respectively; the hinge plates 22a have their'respective ends terminating in-outwardly extending aperturedv lug members which have their opposite ends pivoted to the lug members 11i and 19EL respectively, while theends of the hinged plates 23 are correspondinglyr constructed and secured to the llug members .15a and out- Wardly extending plate members 21k?. It is thus noted that when using this form of my invention that the door l2 is arranged wholly within the door frame l0 and that the same may be opened from: eitherside and upon the opposite sides thereof.
It will thus be noted from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that this modified Yform ofl my invention will also operate in the same manner as the preferred form, that is, to facilitate the opening of the door l2 from either side in order that the ingress and egress of persons through a doorway and the like will be facilitated to such an extent that it will' make no difference what side of the door is opened and if used in the instance upon doorways in business houses will reduce the traffic congestion 'through the doorways when using this novel form of device.
l It is also to be noted that this invention provides a very useful and efficient device for use upon screen doors and screens for use in windows as well as doors to be used in business houses which are frequently inconvenient for egress and ingress of patrons. The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
The invention, owing to the construction thereof may be equally and eifectually as well applied upon the doors of motor vehicle bodies and which will overcome the usual difculty in the opening of the doors when articles are carried upon the running boards therefor or the particular occupant of the vehicle forgets at which side or end the door is hinged. . Having thus described the invention7 what is claimed is: v
A hinge construction comprising plate members carried upon the ends of the door, hinged plates pivotally connected `in stag gered relation to the ends of the plate members, hinges carried upon the remaining' ends of the hinged plates and connected with the door frame, and braces carried Iby the door frame and disposed between the hinged plates to alternately support companion hinged plates when the door is opened from either side to prevent sagging of the door.
