PATENT OFFICE CHARLES H. VOUTE, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR EMPTVING PRlVY-VAULTS.
Specification forming part of, Letters Patent No. 72.210, dated January 11, 1876; application filed December 17, 1875. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. VOUTE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and.State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Machines for Cleaning Privy-Vaults; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my machine; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for cleaning privy-vaults, and other like places; and the nature of my invention consists in the combination of receiving and discharging tanks, and a double-acting air-pump with pipeconnections, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a strong tank, of any suitable capacity, which is mounted on wheels, and designed for the transportation of the material. B designates a deodorizer, which communicates, by a pipe, at, with the tank A, and should contain a substance which will prevent the esc'a-pe of noxious odors. O C designate two strong barrels or tanks, provided with pipes 11 c d 0. (Shown in Fig. l.) The pipe b communicates with the transportingtank A. The pipes c d communicate with the cylinder D of a dou-' ble-acting air-engine; and the pipe 0 communicates with the vault E. All the pipes are removable.
. When the pipe-connections are made as described, and the engine is put in motion, matter will be drawn from the vault into the tank (3; and when this tank is nearly full a valve, f, will be floated up, and thus close pipe 0, preventing further action. When tank 0 is charged, the pipe 0 is changed to tank 0. The pipe 0 is also changed to tank I). The pipe bis then attached to tank 0, and so also is the pipe d. When the pump is again worked air is exhausted from tank 0', and, at the same time, air is forced into the tank 0, which causes the material to flow into the transporting-tank It will be seen from the above description that I exhaust air from and fill one tank, while I at the same time force the material from the other tank into the transporting-tank A. One great advantage of my invention is, that I avoid the inconvenience and labor incident to the present system of moving filled barrels from privy-vaults to the wagon in the street.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy In combination with receiving and discharging tanks 0 G and a transporting-tank, A, a double-acting engine, B, and the several removable pipe-connections, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. CHARLES H. V0 UTE. Witnesses:
' M. B. VOUTE, P. T. KEENE.
