Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOEa l LIBBIE F. THORNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE BODKINS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 172,207, dated January 11, 1876 application filed December 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIBBIE F. THORNE, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Extension or Double Bodkin.
This invention relates tO a novel device for inserting ribbon or tape into runs or seams in articles of dress; and the novelty consists in the device as constructed, which will be fully described in the following specification,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side view, showing the bit'urcated ends or fingers which hold the ribbon or tape to be inserted.
In` the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents a wire or other suitable: substance, bent to the form shown, and provided with the double slide B, whereby the ends or fingers D D can be expanded or contracted to suit different widths of material to be inserted. The ends of the body or wire A are bifurcated or slotted horizontally, so the ribbon or tape can be inserted, the same being secured therein by means of the slides C C. The wire or body A is so formed Or bent as to have a tendency `to spread the ends D D apart when the slide B is run down toward the bulge or handle E, which forms the end or handle of the bodkin, and consequently, by moving the slide up or down, any desired width may be accommodated.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The ends D Dot' the bodkin are adjusted to the width of the ribbon by means of the slide B, and the ribbon is inserted in the slots Or jaws of said ends, and secured in place by pushing up the slides C C. The end E ot the bodkin is then inserted in the run Or seam, and the ribbon is readily drawn through.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The duplex bodkin, with adjustable arms, substantially as described.
2. An expansible bodkin, provided with clamping-jaws D D, secured b v means of slides C O, substantially as shown and described.
3. An eXpansible bodkin,consisting of the body A, slide B, clamping-jaws D D, and slides U C, substantially as shown and described.
