TOWEL CABINET.
'Application led August 2, 1926. Serial N'o. 126,540.
, This invention relates to cabinets wherein provision is made for receiving a roll or web of clean towel to be dispensed over a delivering device to a position where it can be conveniently reached and used by a person standing in front of the cabinet, provision also being made for winding up the soiled web of towel on the takeup roll that is driven from the delivery device so that the delivery7 of the clean web and the winding up of the soiled portion will be simultaneous and synchronous. v
In sucha cabinet, the web of soiled towel after being used, is dropped by the user and frequently the soiled web will drop down over the front of the cabinet and trail upon the floor after repeated use of the cabinet and present an untidy and unsightly appearance in the toilet or other room where the cabinet may be located.
The purpose, therefore, of my invention is to provide means set by the operation of drawing out and usingthe web of clean towel for drawing the used portion of the towel into the cabinet immediately upon release of the web by the person using the towel.
A further object is to provide a simple, inexpensive mechanism which will be strong and durable and be operative for the purpose designed even though the pull of the user may-be at one side ofthe towel web.
Other objects of the invention will appear Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on the' line 3 3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the cabinet showing a modified form of the soiled towel takeup;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the takeup device removed from the cabinet;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified construction.
In the drawing, 2 represents an upright towel cabinet having supporting legs 3 and a chamber 4 in the lower portion adaptedto receive a roll or web of clean towel 5. The chamber 4 is separated. from the upper port1on of the cabinet by a partition 6. This partition extends upwardly along the rear of the cabinet and back of this partition through an opening 7 in the wall of which the clean web of towel is strungto the upper portion of the cabinet. ,At this point, I provide a delivery feed roll V8 having a roughened surface, ypreferably sanded, and over which the clean web of towel is stretched through a passage 9 provided between/the feed roll and the top wall of the cabinet. y A delivery device 10 adapted to be manipulated by the user of the towel is provided forvcontrollingy the length of the feeder the degree of movement of the feedroll with eachvoperation. 11 is a second feed roll having ay driving connection indicated by dotted lines with the first named roll to be operated therefrom, the rolls being of substantially the same size and having they same peripheral speed, the
`second feed roll engagingfthe lsoiled web of towel that is wrapped yaround'a takeup roll l2 that is vertically movable in slots 13. This takeup roll will only rest by gravity upon the roughened surface ofthe roll 11 and is driven thereby to wind up the soiled towel as the feed roll 11 is revolved through theV operation of the feed roll 8. An opening 14 is provided in the front wall of the cabinet through which the user may have access to the towel web as it depends from the delivery feed roll and this towel web is held out of Contact withgthe .talreup roll'` by a pivoted plate 15 mounted within the cabinet andlim.-
sol
ited in its downward movement by a stop 16.
The towel will be drawn outxto theposition indicated bydotted lines, by the person standing in front ofthe cabinetQandvwhile the person usingthe cabinet should thrust the soiled portion of the towel back through the delivery opening, frequently he will not stop to do it and the web of soiled towel would drop down on the outside of the cabinet, gradually increasing in length with each successive use until finally it would trail on the floor i and present an unsightly appearance in the washroom.
To avoid this objection, I provide guideways 17 on each side of the cabinet and blocks 18 of a material suitably dense in character, such as metal to provide suHcient weight to slide quickly down to the bottom of the guides when released. These blocks are preferably T-shaped in cross section as shown in Figure 2, and slide freely in the guides 17. Screw-eyesy 19 are mounted in these blocks and links 20 loosely connect the screw-eyes with pins 21 provided in the ends of a roller 22 around which the web of towel is passed before winding on the takeup roll. When the user draws the towel out of the cabinet for lwiping purposesthe roller 22 will be raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 and when the user has iinished wiping and releases the web, the weighted roller will quickly'return to its normal position in the lower portion of the guides and drag the soiled portion of the towel back into the cabinet where it will be hidden from view. A plate 23 is preferably mounted in the front wall of the cabinet between the blocks in which the guides 17 are formed.
' In Figure 4, a modified construction is shown which consists in providing a plate 24 having brackets 25 thereon in which a roller 26 is mounted, the plate 24 being of suiicient Wei ht to hold the roller at the bottom of the g-ui es which correspondv to those described with reference to Figure 2. Y f
In Figure 6, another modification is shown which consists in providing pairs of anti-friction wheels 27 at -eachend of the plate 2431. These wheels bear on the outer walls of the guides to form anti-friction bearings for the sliding plate, preventing it froinbinding or cramping in the guides.` In other respects, the structure is substantially the same as described with reference to Figure 1.
I claim as my invention:
1. A towel cabinet adapted to receiveV a supply of clean towel', a delivery feed roll in the upper portion of said cabinet over which the web of clean towel may be stretched, the Y front of the cabinet having a delivery opening, a second feed roll driven from said'irst named roll, a take-up around which the soiled towel may be wound and adapted to contact withV said second feed roll, blocks mounted to slide in vertical guideways Vin said cabinet, a roller having a'tilting pivotal connection with said blocks and around which roller the web of ,towel may be wound and stretched to said take-up roll, whereby drawing the towel web outwardly through said delivery opening by the user raises said roller and blocks in said guideways, and the release of the towel web by the user allows said roller and blocks to returnv by gravity to theirA normal position anddraws the soiled towel web within the cabinet.-
2. A towel cabinet adapted to receive a web of clean towel, a feed delivery roll over which the web of clean towel may be stretched, the cabinet having a delivery opening adjacent said feed roll through which the user of the towel may grasp the clean web, a second feed roll having a driving connection with saidt first named roll, a take-up roll around which the soiled towel may be wound for contact with said second feed roll, blocks mounted to slide vertically in said cabinet, a roller having pins in the ends thereof and links loosely connecting said pins with said blocks,l the web of towelbeing passed under said roller before Winding its end on the take-up roll, said roller and blocks being raised in said guideways when the towel web is pulled out through said delivery opening by the user and the weight of the blocks and roller returning them to `their normal position on said guid'eways and drawing the towel web back into the cabinet through said delivery opening.
3. A towel cabinet having an opening in its upper front wall, and alsohaving a middle compartment and a bottom compartment, a towel take up roll in the middle compartment and below the bottom ofy said opening, the front wall of the cabinet extending upwardly to the bottom of said opening, a towel feed roll in the upper part of the cabinet, the cabinet having a chamber for a towel supply in the bottom compartment, the middie compartment having a back wall to separate the towel web as it passes from the towel supply chamber to the upper feed roll, aroller having guides for reciprocation within the cabinet and below said opening and under which the towel passes4 as it advances to the take up roll, said roller serving to pull' back into the cabinetV through said opening the portion of towel web pulled out by the user Y and thus keep the towely within the cabinet.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of. July, 1926.
