- July 23.1929. c. N. WEAVER BINDING CLAMP Filed NOV. 22, 1927 Patented July 23, 1929.
warren STATES GHARLES N; WEAVER, OF RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.
BINDING CIJAM'P;
Application filed November-22, 1927. Serial No. 235,103..
This invention relates toabinding clamp. for securing a pair of members together in A further object is to provide a binding;
clamp for securing the, steps and side members of a step-ladder together which in addition to serving its function as a support for the steps of the ladder also acts as a binding means for the steps in order to prevent the steps from splitting when pressure is applied thereto.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawing I have shown several embodiments of the invention. In this show- I Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a ladder showing the binding clamp in position,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to Figures 1 and 2 respectively but showing a modified form of binding clamp,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of another modification, and,
Figure 7 is a View corresponding to Figure 3 but showing another modification.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a step of a ladder connected at its ends to uprights or side members 11. The binding clamp shown in Figure .1 and desig nated generally by the numeral 12 comprises a pair of spaced arms 13 and 14 which extend along the under side of each end of the step. These arms extend through the side member 11 and are fastened thereto by means of nuts 15. The opposite ends of the arms 13 and 14 are bent upwardly and extend throu h the step 10 and have their ends connected by a preferably flat integral cross-bar 16. A plate 17 extends under each end of step 10 between the lower surface of the step and the arms 13 and 14. The central portion of the plate 17 is formed into-alU-shaped bracingmember 18 having its ends contacting with the side member 11. ofthe ladder. The plate 17 alsohas its ends bent upwardlyandithen inwardly to form bindingextensions 19 lying along the edges and the top surface of steplO. The arms 13 and 14 support the plate 17 on which the step 10 rests and portions of the arms 13 and 14 extendupwardly through plate 17, step 10 and extensions 19 and have their ends connected together in the manner referred to. so astoholdextensions 19 in contact with the sideedges and top surface of the step, thus-acting as a. binding means to prevent the step. from;
splitting when pressure is exerted thereon.
In Figures 4 and 5, I have shown a modification in which the binding clamp is similar to that shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, with the exception that plate 18 does not-have the U-shaped bracing portion 18 as in the form above described.
The modification shown in Figure 6 is similar to the form of binding clamp shown in Figures 4 and 5, except that plate 17 is not provided with the binding extensions as at 19 in Figures 4 and 5.
In Figure 7, I have shown a still simpler form of binding clamp than is shown in the other modifications, and this. simplified binding clamp has neither the bracing arm 18 as shown in Figure 3, nor the plate 17 which. is included in the other modifications, but consists simply of the bent arms 13 and 14 connected at one of their ends to the side member of the ladder and having their opposite ends extending through step 10 and connected by a preferably integral cross-bar which may be circular in cross section.
Where a ladder of great height is used it is advisable to employ the form of clamp shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, as this form of clamp makes a very rigid connection between the steps and sides of the ladder.
Although I have shown and described several embodiments of my invention it is to be understood that changes may be made in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A device for securing a pair of members together in angular relationship, comprising a plate lying ad'acent one side of one end of one of said mem ers, a pair of spaced arms lying adjacent said plate, the ends of said arms remote from the end of said member being connected, a portion of said arms being angularly arranged with respect to and extending transversely through said plate and said member, the Opposite ends of said arms extending through the other member and being secured thereto.
2. A device for securing a pair of members together in angular relationship, comprising a plate lying adjacent one side of one end of one of said members and having extensions lying along the vertical edges and the opposite side of said member, a pair of spaced arms lying adjacent said plate, the ends of said arms remote from the end of said member having portions extending through said plate, said member, and said extensions, and connected at their extremities, the opposite ends of said arms extending through the other member and being secured thereto.
3. A device for securing a pair of members together in angular relationship, comprising a plate lying adjacent one side of one end of one of said members and having extensions lying along the vertical edges and the opposite side of said member, said plate having a downwardly extending portion adapted to contact with the other member, a pair of spaced arms lying adjacent the under side of said plate, the ends of said arms remote from the end of said member having portions extending through said plate, said first mentioned member, and said extensions and connected at their extremities, the opposite ends of said arms extending through the other member and being secured thereto.
4. A binding clamp comprising a plate having upwardly and inwardly bent binding extensions and a downwardly extending substantially U-shaped bracing extension, a pair of spaced arms lying adjacent the under side of said plate, one of the ends of said arms being bent upwardly and extending through said plate and being connected at their extremities, the opposite ends of said arms being provided with fastening means.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES N. WEAVER.
