IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR APPLYING POLISH.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172, 177, dated January 11, 1876; application filed October 16, 1875,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISRAEL M. ROSE, o Brook Haven, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Containing and Applying Polishing and other Liquids; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.

This invention relates to'a hand device for containing and applying polishing and other liquids. The same may be used for applying polishing liquids or solutions to boots "and shoes, blacklead or polishing solutions to stones, oil to harness, and ink or other marking solutions to stencil-plates but although the invention is not restricted to these purposes, it is more especially designed to be used for applying'liquids or solutions like those hereinbefore named, or others which it is desirable on account of their soiling properties or odor to avoid coming in contact with the users hand.

The invention consists in a" combination of a bottle, can, or other liquid-container of suitable construction to be conveniently grasped by the hand when using the device, a perforated or tubular stopper for closing said container after it has been charged with the necessary liquid or solution, also for ejecting the latter as required, and a sponge, brush, or other-like holder, mounted on or over the mouth of the container, and designed to hold a brush, sponge, or other absorbent distributer, for applying the liquid or solution ejected from the container. Said holder should be constructed to open and close, to provide for the removal of the sponge or brush when filling the container, and to provide for substituting a new sponge or brush when required, and, in this connection, the invention furthermore consists in an opening and closing sponge or brush spring-holder, in combination with the mouth of the container. 4

Figure 1 represents an exterior longitudinal view of an improved liquid or solution containing and applying device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same with the sponge, brush, or distribu' ter removed Fig. 3, a plan of the same.

A is the liquid or solution container, which may be a bottle or can of metal, or any other suitable material, and preferably of a cylindrical form in its transverse section, but of no greater diameter or bulk than will admit of its beiug conveniently grasped and wielded by the hand of the user. This can or bottle, which may or may not be made with a springbottom, b, to provide for the ejection, as in certain oil-cans, of the liquid or solution from within the container, has its mouth 0 fitted with a perforated or tubular stopper, B, which answers the double purpose of providing for the filling of the container, and for the ejection, as required, through the perforation or tube in it, of the liquid or solution into, against, or through a sponge, brush, or other suitable absorbent distributor, 0, carried bya holder, D, which is mounted on or over the month end of the container. Said holder, whichmay either be a permanent attachment to the container, or be detachable therefrom at pleasure, as required, it is desirable, whether made attachable or detachable, to construct so that it may be readily opened and closed, alike for the purpose of removing and renewing the absorbent distributor G, and of giving ready access to the interior of the container byremoving the stopper, for the purpose of filling or replenishing said vessel with liquid or solution. To these ends I propose to construct the holder D of any number of elastic uprights or wires, f, arranged around the mouth of the container, also projecting above it, and hooked or bent at top to grasp or hold the absorbent distributor 0 upon a ring, g, being slid upward to contract or force inward the wires f. The sliding downward of the ring g releases said-spring-holder and liberates th absorbent distributor G. I

When using the liquid containing and applying device, the container A is grasped by the hand and the liquid ejected from it, as required, to saturate the sponge or absorbent distributer, either by jerking the container or by pressing with the thumb on its bottom, and then manipulating the whole device, so as to distribute or apply the liquid or solution taken up by the distributer to the object or surface required to be polished or smeared, and which may not only be done with greater convenience and dispatch than is attainable by the ordinary appliances, but all soiling or tainting of the fingers or hand of the user by the liquid or solution is avoided. The container A also serves as a reservoir for any desired quantity of the liquid or solution, always ready for use in connection with the brush, sponge, or absorbent distributer.

To increase the convenience of the article it may be shut or inclosed by a case made to slide or screw over the container, whereby the article may'be packed away in a trunk or valise for use when traveling.

I claim- The holder D, constructed of springs or elastic wires f and a sliding or adjustable closing-ring, g, in combination with the sponge G and perforated stopper B in the mouth of the container A, substantially as described.
