UNITED' STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LEVI S. HOGEBOOM, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THREE RIVERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF.SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-EDGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. '172,12 l, dated January 11, 1876; application led October 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI S. HoGEBooM, of Three Rivers, in the 'county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gang-Edgers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
' clear, and exact description of the construction Same,
This invention has relation to `improvements in gang-ed gers; and it consists in certaln iin- )rovements in `an r-ed (fers as will be hereinl b 7 after more full-y set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents a suitable upright frame, upon which are arranged, in bearings, corrugated or ribbed rollers B B', and between them the shaft C of a gang of saws, D Dl D2. Shaft C is provided upon ,one 'end with an actuating-pulley, c, and upon its other end with a cone-pulley, E, cons'sting, preferably, of two parts, b c, the large one, b, being next the frame. The corresponding ends of the journals of rollers B B' are provided with coilepulleys F F' of equal diameters, but of greatery diameter than pulley E, which pulleys are also, preferably, composed of two parts, d d', the smaller part, d', being next the frame. The effect of this construction is that the larger wheels of cone-pulleys F F are in line with -the smaller wheel, c, of cone-pulley E, and
the larger wheel, b, of the latter in line with the smaller wheels of the former, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
The gang-saws are operated, preferably,
Vthrough an endless belt applied over pulleycone-pulley E on shaft C of the gang-saws. By this means the gan g-saw shaft and the rollers are actuated by one and the same endless belt communicating withv the motor, and the speed of motion of the rollers relative to that of the gang-saws may be increased or diminished, as the necessities of the case may require, by shifting the belt G from the outer to the inner wheels d b of cone-pulleys F F' E, or' from the inner to the outer wheels thereof, the effect of the former operation or change being to increase the speed of rotation of the rollers, and of the latter change to diminish it Without in any degree changing in either case the speed of the motion of the gang-saws. By this means I am able t0 saw olI the waneylil parts of lumber of dierent kinds and of different degrees of hardness without dan ger of stopping the saws or impairin g their efficiency, either through the too rapid feed of the lumber to the saws or because of the feed being too slow.
In order that the ends of the lumber may be prevented from being splintered oii' by the action of the saws after leaving feed-roller, I have devised the following simple device: I use a strong, slightly-bridged rest-bar, J, the upper surface of which is in the same horizontal plane with rollers B B', which bar is arranged between the saws and the feed-roller B', and is provided upon its extremities with a base-plate, e, through which is cut a slot, s. Through these slots set-screws S are passed, which, being forcibly set up, will clamp the base of the rest-bar to the frame in suitable proximity to the saws to prevent the ends of the lumber from being splintered or broken oi' upon their under sides.
The rest-bar, being adjustable, is capable of being moved nearer the saws when from frequent sharpening and long use they have decreased in diameter, thus providing an always effective rest for the purpose above described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a gang-edger, the combination of the intermediate gang-saw shaft C, having conepulley E, tapering outwardly, the rollers B B', In testimony that I claim the above I have having; cone-pulleys F F', tapering inwardly, hereunto subscribed my name in the presence and the shifting-belt Gr, adapted to be changed of two Witnesses. from one of the sets of Wheels of the said oonepulleys to the other, substantially as and for l LEVI S. HOGEBOOM. the purpose set forth. v
2. In combination with the rollers B B and Witnesses: a gang of saws, the adjustable rest-bar J, sub- O. F. BEAN, stautiallyf as specified. Y FRED. J. SELDEN.
