COMBINED BREAST STRAP AND MARTINGALE CONNECTION.

Application filed April 13, 1927. Serial No. 183,452.

This invention relates to improvements in combined breast strap and martingale connections.

In the ordinary harness construction, the strap slide and martingale connection are secured together by means of a bolt and as the martingale connection must be free to pivot or swivel there is considerable wear on the bolt. r

It is therefore the primary object of the present invention to overcome the above ob jection by providing a connection of the class described in which the use of a pivot bolt is eliminated and in which the martingale connection is formed with trunnions to take the wear.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined breast strap and martingale connection in which the latter portion is cast of a malleable metal in a shape for easy assembly and is then readily bent to the desired final form in attached position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined breast strap and martingale connection of such construction that the assembly of the parts is very simple and may be quickly accomplished.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined breast strap and martim gale connection which is of very simple construction, is strong and durable, is inexpensive to manufacture, and is well adapted for the purpose described.

lVith the above and other objects in View the invention consists of the improved combined breast strap and martingale connec tion, and its parts and combinations, as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

A particular feature of the invention resides in the manner in which the martingale connection is initially formed and'in its mode of attachment or assembly with the strap slide member. The martingale connection is formed of a malleable metal and is cast in the shape shown in Fig. 3 with the arms 15 thereof spread and the yoke end portions bent toward each other. The trunnion portions 16 of the arms 15 are then positioned adjacent the aperture 13 of the portion 12 of the strap slide member and the arms 15 are next contracted with respect to each other or forced together and the force applied thereto will also cause a divergence of the portions of the yoke 19. The final result is that the martingale connection assumes the shape shown in Figs. 1, 2 and l with the trunnions lodged within the aperture 13 and the retaining rivet 18 is inserted. Also, the lower screw 20 with its sleeve 21 is connected to the yoke.

Obviously the construction described provides for the simple and quick assembly of the parts of a combined breast strap and martingale connection and the wear on the usual martingale connection pivot bolt is eliminated. The wear, instead, is on the trunnion portions 16 Which are of a heavy stock.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved combined breast strap and martingale connection is of very simple and novel construction, and is Well adapted for the purpose described.

That I claim as my invention is:

1. A combined breast strap and martingale connection, comprising a strap slide member formed With a comparatively small opening, a one-piece martingale connection having a pair of spaced arms, the ends of said arms being formed with opposed inwardly projecting apertured shoulders, and said shoulders entering said opening in the strap slide member and abutting each other and permitting pivotal movement of said members With respect to each other and completely filling said strap slide opening, and a rivet extended through said shoulder apertures and said strap slide opening.

2. The combination With a strap slide member having an eyed portion, of a onepiece martingale connection pivotally connected thereto With portions extended into said eyed portion, said martingale connection being formed of cast bendable metal and having a yoke portion and a pair of arms, the arms and yoke portion being separated .tion,

by a cross piece and the arms having inturned abutting shoulders extended into said eyed portion.

3. A combined breast strap and martingale connection, comprising a strap slide member formed With a smallopening, a malleable, one-piece martingale connection having a pair of spaced arms, the ends of said arms being formed with opposed inwardly projecting trunnions, said trunnions extending into said strap slide opening and abutting each other and permitting pivotal movement of said members With respect to each other, and a reenforcing member 6X- tended through said strap slide opening and said trunnions, the external end portions of said reenforcing member being formed with heads and preventing spreading of said arms.

4. The combination With a strap slide member having an eyed portion, of a martingale connection pivotally connected thereto with portions extended into said eyed porsaid martingale connection being formed with a yoke portion and a pair of arms, the arms and yoke portion being separated by a cross piece and the arms having inturned abutting shoulders extended into said eyed portion.
