METHOD 0F UNITING AND SUSTAINING TI-IE PANELS 0F PORTABLE FIELD-FENCES.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC D. Gannon, of
Lyons, in the county of Wayne and State.
fence: Fig. 2, a side elevation of a portion( of said fence; Fig. 3, a section in the line y, y, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4L, is an end view of one of the panels of said fence.
The same letters indicate the same parts in each drawing.
The panels of my improved fence are composed of a suitable number of boards b, Z), arranged with open spaces between their edges and secured to the.posts c, CZ, c, f, f, which are placed in the respective positions represented in the drawings; viz: the broad post c', and the triangular post rl, are secured opposite each other to one end of the aforesaid 'series of boards Y), 7), which form a panel; the post f, is secured to the same side of the panel as the post d, and at the distance of a few feet therefrom: the post e, is also secured to the same side of the panel at the extreme opposite end thereof, and the post f, is secured to the opposite side of the panel at the distance of a few feet from the post e. The outer surfaces of the posts (Z, c, and also the ends of the boards Z), to which said'posts are secured, should be beveled off to such an angle as to give the proper shape to the fence when the respective panels thereof are combined with each other.
A hook or clamping-piece g, is secured to the beveled surfaces of the posts (Z, c, in such a position that when a couple of panels are united to each other the said hook will tit in between a couple of the boards of the end of the matching panel and embrace the post c, at the extremity of said panel, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3, and thereby prevent the said panels from being drawn inward to a more acute angle than that represented in the aforesaid drawings. The said panels are retained in the position represented in Figs. 1, and 3, by a key a, of such a length and shape that when it is placed in its proper position, the central portion of its back will bear against the inner angle of the post c, and its front curved edge, near its extremities, will bear against the posts f, f, of said panels and act with just suflicient force against the counteracting influence of the hook, or fastening-piece g, to malte a stiff joint between the united ends of any `two panels of my improved fence.
By squaring the outer faces of the posts C, CZ, at that end of a panel of my improved fence, the said panel when joined to another, will be at rightangles thereto.
Instead of one hook or clamping-piece g, to each panel of my improved fence, two, three or more of them may be employed.

My improved portable field-fence constructed substantially as herein represented and described.
