This invention relates to tips or casters and sockets formounting the same in or on the legs of chairs or other articles of furniture, and this application is a division of my copcnding application for patent on tip, Serial No. 705,451, filed April 10, 1924. The primary object of my invention is to provide a tip which is strong and durable in construction, attractive in appearance when mounted on a chair leg or the like,

' Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan. Referring now to the drawing, my improved tip structure includes a main mounting member or socket 10, a secondary mounting member or cushion holding member 11, and a cushion element 12. The main mounting member 10 preferably consists of a one piece member having an end or bottom wall 13 from which a pair of arms 14 and 15 extend upwardly from oppositely disposed edge portions. The arms 14 and 15 are preferably bent inwardly as shown at 16 and 17 and provided with upturned end portions 18 and 19 which are adapted to abut when the mounting member is inserted into the recessed end of a leg member.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have indicated in dotted lines, a tubular metal leg member 20 in the lower end of which the mounting member is inserted. For limiting movement of the mounting member inwardly of the leg, I provide the bottom wall 13 with seats 2-1 and 22 which are formed by marginal portions of the bottom wall 18 which project beyond adjacent edges of the arms 14 and 15. I also find it desirable to provide the arms 14 and 15 with inwardly bent flanges or ears 23 and 24 which are effective to engage the inside of the leg member to thereby more firmly position the mounting member in the leg.
The bottom wall 13 is preferably aper tured as shown at 25 and provided with a depending flange 26 around the aperture for receiving the secondary mounting member 11 which is preferably cup shaped, as best shown in F ig. 2.
The rim of the cup shaped mounting member 11 is bent outwardly to form an outwardly projecting rim flange 27 which is adapted to engage the end of the depending flange 26 to thereby position the cup shaped member 11 in the aperture of the mounting member 10.
The rim flange 27 is preferably formed so as to' provide a convex outwardly facing edge portion, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 for the purpose fully explained in my said copending application for patent on tip, Serial No. 705,451, and the cushion member 12 may be seated and locked in the cup shaped member also as fully explained in my said co-pending application.
In the above disclosed embodiment of my invention I have illustrated a mounting member particularly adapted for use with rectangular tubular metal chair legs, and also more particularly adapted for use with an inclined chair leg such as 'the rear legs of many chairs.
It will be readily understood that my improved tip structure may be used and manufactured with equal facility for legs which are not disposed at an angle to the floor, as well as for wooden legs provided with a recess in their lower ends. I am aware that ,,many changes in the form, construction and proportion of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which should be determined by reference to the following claims, which should be construed as broadly as possible,
consistent with the state of the art.
I claim as my invention: a
1. A tip for a chair leg or the like comprising a rectangular metal tube, said tip comprising a one-piece member having a substantially rectangular bottom wall provided with means adapted to engage a floor or other support without scratching or marring the same, and a plurality of flat arms integral with said bottom wall, extending upwardly from opposite edge portions thereof, for entering said tube and frictionally 'en aging the inside of a pair of op site wals, the upper ends of said arms be Divided and this application filed November Serial No. 234,602.

2. A tip for chair leg or the like hav-- ing a recess in its lower end, said tip comprising a one-piece member having a bottom wall provided with means adapted to engage a floor or other support without scratching or marring the same and a pair of arms integral with said bottom wall, ex-
tending upwardly from opposite edge portions thereof, said arms being disposed substantially parallel to each other, inclined relative to said bottom wall and adapted to enter the recess in said leg for frictionally engaging the inside of the wall of the recess, the upper ends of said arms being bent towards and abutting against each other so as to resiliently maintain the arms in spaced relation thereby effecting tight frictional engagement between the arms and wall, the oppositely disposed marginal portions of said bottom wall intermediate the upwardly extending arms projecting laterally outwardly to serve as supports for portions of the lower end otthe leg.
3. In combination, a cushioned tip comprising a one-piece mounting member including a bottom wall having an opening therein, a pair of arms integral with said bottom wall and extending upwardly from oppositely disposed edge portions of the bottom wall for entering a hollow leg and Erictionally engaging the inside of the wall of said hollow leg, oppositely disposed marginal portions ofsaid bottom wall intermediate adjacent edges of said upwardly extending arms projecting laterally outwardly'to serve as supports for portions of the adjacent end of the leg, a cushion member, and means for mounting said cushion of said hollow leg, oppositely disposed marginal portions of said bottom wall intermediate adjacent edges of said'upwardly extending arms projectinglaterally outwardly to serve as supports for portions of the adjacent end of the leg, a cushlon member,
means for mounting said cushion member on said bottom wall comprising a cup-shaped member snugly fitting the opening in said bottom wall and adapted to receive said cushion, and a laterally outwardly projecting rim flange on said cup-shaped member for engaging a portion of the bottom wall around said openingto position the cupshaped member in said opening.
5. In combination, aicushioned tip comprising a one-piece mounting member including a bottom wall having an opening therein, a. pair of arms integral with said bottom wall and extending upwardly from oppositely disposed edge portions of the bottom wall for entering a hollow leg and trictionally engaging the inside of the wall of said hollow leg, the upper ends of said arms being bent towards and abutting against each other so as to resiliently maintain the arms in spaced relation, thereby effecting tight frictional engagement between the arms and wall, oppositely disposed marginal portions of saidbottom wall intermediate adjacent edges of said upwardly extending arms projecting laterally outwardly to serve as supports for portions of the adjacent end ol the leg, and means for mounting said cushion member on said bottom. wall comprising a cup-shaped member snugly fitting the opening in said bottom wall and adapted to receive said cushion,
