WINDSHIELD.

My present invention relates to a device to be used to shield a tlanie as from an igniter of the riga r or cigarette type or from a match.

An important object ot my invention is the provision -of a windshield `which may be readily attached to and detached from such an igniter or to and from a package of cigars, cigarettes, matches or the like.

Another object is to provide such a device which will allow ready access to the top of the igniter or package without interfering therewith, but at the same time to effectively shield the flame from the wind tor a sutiicient length of time to allow the cigar or cigarette lo be lighted.

To this end the invention contemplates a three-sided shield, each side being substantially at right angles to each other, or in such Y t curved relation that an oval or rectangular package may betitted thereto, the open side ot' which is provided with twov spring arms adapted to engage the corresponding face of the igniter or package, said 'arms holding by friction the shield to the igniter or package..

Suitable. provision is made in the sides of the shield to permit air to pass therethrough in sull'icientquantities to feed the lan'ie'but not enough to blow it ont.

In the embodiment illustrated, I have indicated a shield consisting of rear wall 1 and side Wings 2 and 3 in which. the side wings engage the rear wall at right angles. Each side wing is provided at its lower front edge with arms 4 and .5 spring hinged as at 6 and 7, which hinge tends to move the arms in a direction towards the rear wall.

Air openings 8 are provided in rear wall l and side wings 2 and 3 in order to permit air for combustion to enter but not a direct draft of suticient intensity to blow out a flame held within the periphery of the shield.

The angular wings are of particular benefit in such cases where the shield-is to be used as with a match box 9. In use the shield embraces the box on three sides, and the arms 4 and 5 under impulse of their respective springs, trictionally engage the fourth side thus holding the device in place.

Instead 0I the angular wings, I find it desirable in some instances to form the entire shield in the form of a substantially open or broken oval, which case the shield will readily be adapted to such a package as those for cigarettes or small cigars in which the package is of comparatively soft paper or the like. Such a shield is shown at 10, the arms 4 and 5 engaging the front of the package. This form of shield is also provided with ventilating slots 8.

I find that the etticiency of cigarette and cigar lighters oi' the type which are ignited by throwing sparks from a stick of pyrophoric material by means of an abrasive wheel onto a wick' soaked with some volatile combustible material, may be materially increased by using a shield such as above described.

I have illustrated such an igniter diagrammatically at 11 having an abrasive wheel 12 which upon rotation throws sparks from a stick of pyrophoric material 13 upon a wick 14. In lighters of this type, an extinguishing arm 15 is hinged to a post 16 and is provided with an inverted cup which overlies the wick 14. 'Iliis arm must first be lifted to expose the wick. As it would be more or less inconvenient to raise this arm 15 with such a shield in place, I clip onto it an upwardly projecting stud 17 which is readily accessible by the user and pressure on it in a direction parallel to the axis of the arm 15 will tip-the same and expose the Wick.

uch igniters usually are provided with a ridge 18 around the top, and by similarly shaping the lower portion of the shield as at 19, a more rigid connection is made between igniter and shield.

Obviously, the Wings on the shield used with the igniter may be either angular such as used with a. match box ory a-rcuate'as used with a cigarette ackage depending upon the shape of the ignlter end or side walls.

It will be apparent that the device may be readily and quickly attached and detached to a plurality of different objects, and due to the fact that the spring arms 4 and 5 will engage the front of the articleto which the shield is attached, it is immaterial whether the article or package is of a width equal to the distance between side wings. At any event, the'shield will be securely held thereto and will aiord ample protection from the wind to a iame held within its confines.
