This invention relates to improvements in toys and more particularly to a toy possessing educational value. c
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a toyof the class referred to above which will be extremely simple in con struction and inexpensive to manufacture and which will embody,in a minimum space, a maximum number of instructive or educational representations which may be selectively brought to view.
The toy embodying the invention consists essentially of a plurality of disks which are interleaved and so arranged with respect to one another and to a cover disk having a sight aperture therein, that different matters to be displayed to view, printed or otherwise depicted upon the disks, may be brought to position within said opening, selectively, and the invention contemplates a novel interleaving of the disks anda novel relative arrangement thereof which will provide for the display of a maximum number of display areas upon the disks and a great variety in comparison with the number of disks and the area thereof.
Another object of the invention is to so relatively arrange the disks that when once assembled they cannot be disarranged through careless handling of the toy but will, on the other hand, he maintained in their proper assembled relation.
Other objects will bemadejapparent as the description oft-he invention progresses and in the drawings representative examples of embodiments of the invention are illustrated al though the invention is susceptible of a range of modification.

As an example of thepresent invention, the disk 2 and likewise the disk 4; may bear, upon one face, a map 23 as in the instanceof the disk 2, and upon the other face a pictorial representation 21 as in the instance of the disk 4, the map and pictorial illustration occupying, if desired, the entire area of the said face of each respective disk. The disk 2 bears upon its other face, and which face, in the assembled relation of all of the disks, as will presently be described, is the face which is presented next to the cover disk 1, or in the general direction of said cover disk, with a plurality of display areas indicated by the numeral 25 which areas may be outlined or not as desired. In any eventeach area will constitute a pictorial or similar representation or display and, in the specific embodiment of the invention shown, each area may embrace a letter of the alphabet and some. object the name of which has its initial letter represented by the letter referred to as represented in the area. This is of course merely representative of the invention and various plctorial illustrations, verses, prose, quota- .tions from authors, or in fact any instructive matter may be represented as the subject matter of eachdisplay area. As will be. observed by reference to Figure 11 in which the display areas 25 are more clearly illustrated and likewise by reference to Figure 15, which is similar to Figure 11, the display areas are arranged in an annular series concentric to the axis of the disk upon the fare of which they are represented and they are spaced with respect to each other and of such dimensions that they may be individually viewed through the display opening 12 of the cover disk 1 when brought into position opposite said The disk 4; isprovided upon its face which is shown in Figure 15 and which is the face opposite that shown in Figure l t, with an annular series of display areas 26 correspond ing in their general arrangen'ieut and character to the areas 25.
, The disk 3, shown in Figures 12 and 13,
differs from the disks 2 and 11 in that instead of'being provided with display areas. it is formed with an annular series of stencils indicated by the numeral 27, which sten ils may be representative of various articles or animals.
The disk 5 is somewhat different in its construction from the disks 2, 3 and 4 and const itutes an auxiliary display disk. The said disk 5 is of segmental form or in other words does not describe a complete circle but is provided in one side with a segmental recess or opening indicated by the numeral 28and which may be ofany desired angular width as for example, degrees. The disk 5 preferably bears upon one of its faces a series of display areas 29 which are concentric to the opening 10 in the disk, the disk being arranged, as will presently be explained, be tween the disks 2 and 3, and the face which bears the display areas 29 being that face which is presented toward the disk 2. Preferably the walls of the recess or opening 28 will be curved to correspond to the curvature of the incisions 14, 15 and 16 in the disks 2, 3 and 4. Atits periphery and at one side of the opening 28, the disk 5 is formed with a radially outwardly extending linger piece indicated by the numeral 30.
Referring now to Figures 2, 3, 4 and 9 of the drawings it will be observed that the disks 2,3, 4 and 5 are helically interleaved. That is to say the disks are interfitted or interleaved at the incisions 14, 15 and 16 of the disks 2, 3 and 4 and the opening 28 of the disk 5, this helical interleaving being shown in Figure 4 of the drawings in which the several disks have been illustrated on a much exag gerated scale and in a more or less schematic manner to illustrate this feature and yet avoid confusion, it being understood that the disks will be relatively thin, being of cardl'ioard, celluloid, or other thin and suitably st-il'l' material, and that the disks will all lie close to one another in their interleaved relationship, so that the cover disk which is the lowermost disk in Figure 4, will not be spaced from the underside of the disk 2 at that portion of the disk which is in overlapping relation to the disk 4, it being observed that the disk 5 is interleaved with the disks 2 and 3 or in other words lies between these disks and that the disk 2 is next beneath the disk 1, shown clearly in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The disks 2, 3 and 4 are provided at corresponding sides of their incisions 14, 15 and 16 respectively with spring metal friction clipsindicated respectively by the numerals 31, 32 and 33, and it will be observed by reference to Figure 2, that the clips 31 and 32 are designed to frictionally engage over the disks 3 and 4 respectively at the saidsides of the incisions. This engagement of the clips with the companion disks is a frictional engagement and serves to restrain the disks against relative displacement under conditions which'will presently be explained. It may be stated at this point, however, that whereas the clips 31 and 32 upon the disks 2 and 3 are designed to effectively frictionally coact with the disks 3 and 4, the clip 33 upon the disk 4 is adaptedto coact frictionally with the disk 2 when, for example, the disk 2 and the disk 3 remain in the position shown in Figure 2, but the disk 4 is rotatably adjusted through nearly 360 degrees at which time the clip 33 will frictionally coact with the disk 2 at the margin of the incision 14 therein. a i i s It will now be evident that with the parts in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the disks 2, 3, 4 and 5 may all i instead of at the right hand side as illus- 1 trated in said figure and at this time the last display area 25 of the said disk 2 will be exposed within the opening 12. At this time the finger tab 19 will be next adjacent the finger tab 13 of the disk 1 and by grasping this tab and holding the tabs 17, 30 and 18 and the finger tab 13 stationary, the display areas upon the disk 4 may be successively brought opposite the display opening 12, the finger tab 19 being finally brought to position beside the linger tab 17. The linger tab 18 is then grasped, and rotary motion is imparted to the disk 3 so as to bring the stencils 27 thereon successively into positionto be displayed through the opening 12, this movement being continued until thefinger tab 18 is in position beside the finger tab 19. The finger tab 30 may next be grasped and rotary motion imparted to the disk 5 to successively bring the display areas 29 thereof into position opposite the opening 12, this movement being continued until the said finger tab 30 is in position beside the finger tab 18. At this time the opening 28 in the disk 5 will be in position opposite the opening 2 i and therefore the operation previously described may be repeated. In this manner all of the display areas upon the disks 2, 4 and 5 and the stencils in the disk 3 may be displayed to View through the opening 12. VVhile any one of the display areas is in position opposite this opening, a pieceof thin paper may be inserted between the disk 1 and thedisk bearing the display area and a tracing may be made, by the child using the toy, of the object or the like displayed upon the surface of the exposed disk within the bounds of the said display area thereof, or,
if the disk 3 is being adjusted and one of the stencils'27 is opposite the opening 12 and within the bounds of the same, a piece of paper may be inserted between the disk 3 and the disk 4 and a pencil point may be run along the walls Of the opening defining the stencil so as to mark upon the paper a tracing of the represented figure or object. It
will also be understood from the foregoing description that the complete displays 23 and 24 upon the reverse faces of? the disks 2 and 4 may be displayed by adjustment of l 4 through the medium of the tab 19 so as to thedi sks'through the medium of the're'spective finger tabs. In this connection it will be face of the disk 3,: this maybe accomplished .by' holding the finger tabs 13, 17, 3O and 18 stationary and rotatably adjusting the disk cause this disk to enter between the disks 2 and 3. From the foregoing description of the manner of adjusting the several disks, in using the toy, it will be evident that the disks 2, 3, 4 and 5 are movable either individually or collectively with respect to'the disk 1 and that the movement of the disk is restricted to eitherzside' of the finger piece 13 of the disk 1., In other words it is only contemplated that the disks be rotatably adjusted ineither a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction through not more than'that part of a complete revolution which would effect travel of the respective finger pieces 17, 18, 19 or from one side of the finger piece 13 to the other side thereof without passing the said finger piece 13.
As previously stated the incisions 14, 15 and 16 are extended as at 20, 21 and 22 through the finger tabs 17, 18 and 19 and this is necessary in order to permit of the assemblageof the disks in mutually helically interleaved relation. However it is likewise essential that the slit portions of the said tabs 17, 18 and 19 'be'united and this is preferably accomplished in the manner clearly shown in Figures 1, 2, 5 and 6 of the drawings and particularly in the two latter figures wherein the numeral 34 indicates a binding element in the nature of a piece of adhesive tape which is folded transversely medially and disposed with its plies overlapping the opposite sides of the tab to which it is to be applied and adhesively united thereto, the plies being preferably of such a length that'they will extend a short distance inwardly of the tab and be adhesively. united to the respective disk. However in order that the disks may be mutually interleaved in the manner stated, it is necessary that the binding members 34 have their plies formed with slits indicated by the numeral 35 which extend from the end edges of the plies of the Incmber34 to a point adjacent the fold therein,-which fold is indicated by the numeral 36 and receives the outer end edge of the finger tab to which the member 34 is-applied. It will be evident,at this point, from an inspection of Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings that the finger tabs 17 18 and 19 may mutually overlap to the extent of approximately one half the width of the tabs.
The embodiment shown in Figures 16' to 25 inclusive ismuch simpler than the embodicorresponding to the cover disk 1 of the previously described embodiment and a plurality of display disks indicated one by the numeral 38 and the other by the numeral 39 although, while only two of the display disks are shown, any desired number may be employed as will be evident from thedescription which is to follow. Likewise, as will be evident by reference to Figures 20 and 21 of the drawings,
the cover disk 37 constitutes also a display I 37, 38 and 39 are provided centrally with openings 45, 46 and 47 respectively and an eyelct or other swivel element 48 is secured through'these openings and serves to connect all of the disks in the superposed interleaved relation shown in Figures 18 and 1.9 of the drawings, the disk 37 being uppermost in these figures and the disk 39 lowermost. The disks 38 and 39 are provided with openings 49 and 50 which constitute display openings and are of the same contour and dimensions as the opening and it will be observed by reference to Figures 20 to 25 inclusive that the openings 40, 49 and in the disks 37, 3S and 39 are located respectively opposite the finger tabs 42, 43 and 44 and are interposed in the series of display areas upon the faces of the respective disks. It will likewise be observed by reference to Figures 22 and 23, and 24 and 25 and a comparison of these figures that the disks 38 and 39 are provided upon both faces with a series of display areas, these areas being indicated upon the two disks respectively by the numerals 51 and 52.
From the foregoing description of this embodiment of the invention it will be understood that by holding the disk 37 stationary through the medium of the finger tab 42 and simultaneously rotating the disks 38 and 39 by simultaneously grasping their finger tabs 43 and 44, the display areas 51 upon the disk 38 may be successively brought into registration with the display opening 40 of the said disk 37. It will also be understood from the foregoing description that by holding the disk 37 stationary and adjusting the disk 38 so that its opening 49 will register with the opening 40 in the disk 37- and then holding the tabs 42 and 43 stationary sin'uiltaneously and adjusting the disk 39 through the medium of the finger tab 44, the display areas 52 upon the disk 39 may be successively brought to view. It will also be evident that the device as a whole may be reversed or inverted so as to present the disk 39 uppermost as in Figure 17 whereupon the disk 39 may be held stationary and the disks 37 and 38 rotatably adjusted with respect theretoso as to bring the display areas 51 upon the other side of the disk 38 successively into registration with the display opening 50 in the said disk 39 and likewise, as in the previously described operation, the disks 38 and 39 may be held stationary with their openings i9 and 50 in registration and the disk 37 may be rotatably adjusted so as to bring its display areas 4:1 into successive registration withthe registering openings 49 and 50. As previously stated any desired number of the disks maybe connected together-in interleaved relation for relative rotative adjustment, in accordance with this eml'iodiment of the invention.
it is to be understood, of course,'that various changes may be made, Within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim is: i
1. A toy comprising a cover disk having a display opening therein, a plurality of display disks each bearing an annular series of display areas, and means connecting all of said disks to provide for relative rotation of the display disks with respect to one another and with respect to the cover disk, the means being located concentric to the series of dis play areas, the said display disks being mutually, helically interleaved, certain of the disks having openings therein through one or an assemblage ofwhich the display areas of the other disks may be viewed.
2. A toy comprising a cover disk having a display opening therein, and provided with a finger tab at its periphery, a plurality of display disks each bearing an annular series or display areas, means connecting all of the disks concentrically with respect to the said series of display areas, whereby to provide for rotative adjustment of the display disks with respect to one another and with respect to the cover disk and successively bring the display areas to position opposite the display opening'in the cover disk, and finger tabs.
projecting from the said display disks at the peripheries thereof, the display disks being mutually, helically interleaved, certain of the disks having openings therein through one or an assemblage of which the display areas of the other disks may be viewed.
3. A toy comprising a cover disk having a display opening therein, a plurality of display disks arranged beneath the cover disk, means connecting all of the said disks axially thereof to provide for rotative adjustment of the display disks with respect to one another and with respect to the cover disk, each display disk bearing upon its face which is presented toward the cover disk, an annular series of display areas adapted tobe successively brought into position opposite the display opening in the cover disk upon rotative adjustment of the display disk with respect thereto, the said display disks being mutual 1y, helically interleaved, the said display disks bearing upon their other faces display matter occupying substantially the entire area of said faces and adapted to be selectively displayed upon rotative adjustment of the disks with respect one to another,

A toy comprising a cover disk having; a display opening therein, a plurality of display disks arranged beneath the cover disk, means connecting all of said disks axially thereof to provide for rotative adjustment of the display disks with respect to one another and with respect to the cover disk, each display disk bearing upon its face which is presented toward the cover disk, an annular series of display areasadapted to be successively brought into position opposite the display opening in the cover disk upon rotative adjustment of the display disks with respect thereto, the said display disks being mutual ly, helically interleaved, the said display disks bearing upon their outer faces display matter occupying substantially the entire area of said faces and adapted, to be selectively displayed upon rotative adjustment of the disks with respect oneto another, and finger tabs projecting from the peripheries of the disks. j, j a

A toy comprising a plurality of display disks bearing matter ,to be displayed, and means connecting the disks for relative rotative movement about a common axis, the disks-being mutually, helically interleaved, one of the said disks having anopening therein through which matter on adjacent ones of the disks is displayed.

A toy comprising a plurality of disks, a cover disk having a display opening therein, means axially connecting all of the disks and providing for relative rotative adjustment of the display disks with respect to one another and with respect to the cover disk, the display disks being mutually, helically interleaved, the said display disks each hear ing upon one face an annular series of display areas concentric to the connecting means for the disks and adapted to be successively brought to position opposite the opening in the cover disk upon rotative adjustment of the respective display disk, and finger tabs projecting peripherally from all of the disks, the said display disks bearing upon their outer faces display matter occupying substantially the entire area of the said faces and adapted to be displayed substantially in its entirety through relative rotative adjustment of the said display disks.
7 A toy comprising a cover disk having a display opening therein, a plurality of display disks arranged beneath the cover disk and mutually, helically interleaved, means axially connecting all of the disks whereby the display disks may be rotatably ad usted 3 axially connecting all of the disks whereby the display disks may be rotatably adjusted with'relation to one another and with relation to the cover disk, each display disk bearing upon its face'which is presented toward the cover disk, an annular series of display areas adapted toflbe successively brought opposite theop'ening in the cover disk upon rotative adjustment of the said respective display disks, resilient means upon each display disk for coactionwith the adjacent disk to restrain the'disk from relative movement, each of the said disksbeing provided with 'a peripheralfinger piece. A toy comprisinga plurality of display disks bearing matter to be displayed, means connecting the disks for relative rotative movement about a common'axis, the disks be ing provided with radial incisions and being assembled by being mutually, helically interleaved, each disk being provided with a finger tab extending therefrom at its, periphery and divided by the radial incision, and means 10. A toy comprising a cover disk having a I display opening therein, a plurality of display disks each bearing an annular series of display areas, means connecting all of said disks to provide for relative rotation of: the display disks with respect to one another and with respect to the cover disk, the means being located concentric to the series of display areas, the said display disks being mutually, helically interleaved, and means upon certain oi the display disks for eoaction with the next adjacent display disks for maintaining the disks relatively stationary.

A toy comprising a cover disk having a display opening therein, a plurality of display disks each bearing an annular series of display areas, means connecting all of said disks to provide for relative rotation of the display disks with respect to one another and with. respect to the cover disk, the means being located concentric to the series of display areas, the said display disks being mutually, helically interleaved, and means upon certain of the display disks for coaction with the next adjacent display disks for maintaining the disks relatively stationary, the said means comprising resilient clips carried by the said disks at one margin of the incision therein and engageable with the corresponding marginal portion of the overlapping disk.
