Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN RUGKER, OF NAVASOTA, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONIC REMEDIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 71,954, dated January 11, 1876; application riled October 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. F. RUGKER, of the town of Navasota, in the county of Grimes and State ot'Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tonic Medicine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to medicinal compounds; and consists in mixingan d compounding certain ingredients, to be hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to mak and use my compound I will proceed to explain the manner of mixing and compounding the same.
My compound consists of the following ingredients, mixed and compounded in or about the proportions-named-that is to say, sulphate quinine, one dram; dilute sulphuric acid, four drams; purified chinoidine, one-half dram; sulphate iron, (0. p.,) one dram; sulphate magnesia, seven drains; oil peppermint, four minims; saturated quassia-water, (q. s.,) four ounces. Mix, make solution, and filter.
The following instructions are to be observed in mixing my medicine, to wit: First dissolve the sulphate quinine in the diluted sulphuric acid; then the purified chinoidine iu the dilute sulphuric acid in which the quinine has been dissolved; then add to this solution the sulphate magnesia and oil of peppermint then dissolve the sulphate iron,'(c. p.,) in a separate vessel, say mortar, in a portion of the saturated quassia-water, and to the first solution then add suftlcient quantity of the saturated quassia-water to make four ounces of the solution then filter the solution through paper, and it is ready for use. In dissolving the chiuoidine it unites very soon with the dilute sulphuric acid in which the quinine has been-dissolved by rubbing them together in a mortar. prepared in this-proportion: to eight ounces of cistern or rain water one ounce of ground or rasped quassia-wood is added. After two or three hours it is ready for use. The dose for an adult male is a teaspoouful. three times a day, before meals, in a half tumblerful of water. The dose for a woman, or boy fourteen years of age, is half a teaspoont'ul seven years old, quarter of a teaspoonful; three years old, eight drops; one year old, four drops, and so on in this proportion. A piece of licorice placed in the mouth after taking a dose of this medicine effectually destroys the taste produced in the mouth. It should al ways be taken largely diluted with water to increase its effect. Those who have very sen sitive teeth may take it through a quill.
What 'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of e the United States, is-
A medical compound consisting of sulphate quinine, dilute sulphuric acid, purified chinoidiue, sulphate iron, (0. p.,) sulphate magnesia, oil peppermint, and saturated quassia-water, (q. s.,) substantiallyas described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
