- ELECTRIC DRIVE Filed Oct. 31, 1927 Patented July 2, 1929.
' UNITED sTA This invention relates to an electric drive for flexible shafts or the like, and particularly It is also an object of the invention to pro- 3 vide astrueture of this character .having an improved bearing means to facilitate transportation of the drive from one location to another.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, I have devised an electric drive, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification. In this drawing,
- Fig. 1 is a frontelevation of the device, a portion of the base or standard being broken away. e
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device with a portion of the yoke broken away to show i' means of suitable detachable means 29 to a flexible shaft 30 for driving'any'suitable type the catch, and
Fig. 3 is an end elevation but with the drive pulleys shown in dotted lines.
This device comprises an electric motor including a housing 10 and having a rotary drive shaft 11. This motor is mounted on a base 12 which is preferablyswiveled on a stand 13. This stand has three legs 14 to rest on the floor or any suitable support as a bench, and the base is swiveled to this stand by the central swivel stud 15 so that the motor and the shaft operated thereby may be turned about an upright axis.
The device also includes a yoke 16 which forms a convenient means for carrying the device and also carries the adjustable counter shaft. This yoke as shown is of substantially inverted U-shape with its side members or arms 17 and 18 secured to the opposite sides of the motor housing 10, as for instance by I screws 19, and it extends sufficiently above the housing to carry a support 20 for a counter shaft 21 running substantially parallel with the motor shaft, and the connecting bar for the yoke is shaped to form a handle 22 above the counter shaft support. The counter shaft support ispivoted or hinged tothe arm 17 as shown at 23, and extends across the yoke above the housing to the other arm 18 and projects forwardly therefrom to provide a handle 24. The forward portion of snares TES "'PATENT""OFFICE.Y
nLncTRIc DRIVE.
Application filed October 31, 1927. SerialNo. 230,006;
this support hasa recess 39 for the guide por tion 40 of the yoke and this portion is held inthe recess by a cap 41. Thusthe counter shaft support is guidedby the yoke in its up and down movements and held against latera]. movements and the lateral strains on the shaft support are not all carried by its hinge connection to the yoke. The support carries suitable bearings 25 for the counter shaft which are spaced forwardly from the hinge 23 so that as the forward end of this support is swung up and down by the handle 24 the counter shaft is moved from and tow'ardthe motor shaft, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 3. The arm 18 of theyoke and the support 20 are provided with any suitable I type of cooperating means for retaining the support in different elevated positions. That shown comprises a catch lever 26 pivoted to the support and operating a spring pressed pin27 whose inner end may project into 7 different openings 28 in the armof the yoke.
However, any suitable type of catch means may be used if desired.
The'counter shaft may be connected by of portable tool, and this counter shaft is driven from the motor shaft by anysuitable type of drive.- In the present arrangement the counter shaft and the motor shaft are supporting block 34 for carrying the electric 1 socket and switch 35 which is connected through a lead cord 36 to the motor. The socket may be connected by any usual type of plug 37 and flexible lead 38 to any suitable type of outlet receptacle from a source of electric current supply.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that thisarrangement provides a very simple, rigid structure which may be easily carried from place to place, and that the mounting for the counter shaft always retains it in proper relation to the motor sh aft to secure the proper driving. Also this counter shaft may be easily and quickly shifted for shifting the belt and giving different feration of the flexible shaft and the tool driven W thereby.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
1. In an electric drive. a motor including a housing and a rotary drive shaft, a yoke extending on the opposite sides of the housing and secured thereto and extending over the top of the same where it is shaped to form a handle abovethe housing, a support hinged to one side of said yoke to swing up and down, a counter shaft mounted in said support, cooperating means on the support and the other side of the yoke to retain the sup- "port and shaft at difierentelevations, and
driving connection between the motor and counter shafts.
2. In an electric drive, a motor including a housing and a drive shaft, an inverted substantially U-shaped yoke having its arms on the opposite sides of the housing and secured thereto and its connecting bar forming a handle over the housing, a shaft support hinged to one arm of said yoke and extending across to the other arm, cooperating means carried by the latter arm and the support to retain the support in different positions. a counter shaft mounted on the support, and a driving connection between the motor and counter shafts.
3. In an'electric drive, a motor including a housing and a drive shaft, uprights on oppo-v site sidesof the housing and secured theret-o, a shaft support pivoted to one of said uprights to swing toward and from the motor, cooperating means on the support and the other upright to retain the support in different positions with respect to the motor. a counter shaft mounted on the support, and a driving connection from the motor shaft to the counter shaft.
4. In a portable electricdrive, a motor in cluding a housing and a drive shaft, a counter shaft substantially parallel with the motor shaft, a support for the counter shaft connected with the housing and having a handle extending over the housing for carrying, means for shifting the counter shaft toward and from the motor shaft, and a driving connection between the two shafts.
5, In a portable electric drive, a motor includinga housing and a drive shaft, a support pivotally mounted with respect to themotor, a counter shaft mounted on the support substantially parallel with the drive shaft and spaced laterally from said pivot, means for swinging the support on its pivot to move the counter shaft toward and from the drive shaft, means for securing the support in different adjusted positions, and a drive connection between the two shafts.
6. In an electric drive. a motor including a housing and a drive shaft, a yoke having arms on opposite sides of the housing and connected therewith and a connection between said arms over the motor forming a handle, a support pivoted to' one of said arms'and extending across to the other arm, said latter arm and the support being provided with cooperating guide means to guide the support for vertical swinging movements about its pivot, means for securing the support in different. adjusted positions, a counter shaft mounted on the support, and 'a drive connection between the two shafts.
