Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE W. SWAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-TRIMMING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,883, dated January 4, 1876; application filed November 2s, 1874.
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, GEQRGE W. SWAN, ot' San 'Francisco city and county, State ot' California, have invented an Improvement in Box- Trimming Machines; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are' suicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most -nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention, without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to av machine for trimming wooden boxes after they are nailed together; and -it consists of a plane mounted between vertical guides, so as to be reciprocated up and down by a crank-shaft and pitman in the rear of a table upp'nd which the box isplaced.
In order to describe my invention, so that others will understand ,its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front perspective view ot' my machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, showing the cutter. Fig. 3 is a back perspective vlew.
A A are two upright guideposts, which are secured to a frame foundation, B, and the upper ends ol' which are connected by a beam, C, the ends ot' which extend outward upon each side, so that they can be secured to the ceiling of the room in which the machine is operated, and thus hold the guide-timbers rigidly in place. Upon the front side of each of the guide-posts A a metal plate, D, is secured vertically the entire length otl the post, so that their inner edges will project inside of the post. These edges are properly beveled to form ways for the plane-frame to move in. These plates are secured to the posts by means ot' screws e, which pass through transverse slots in the plates, so that by loosening the screws the plates can be adjusted to or from each other for the purpose ot' properly fitting the ways in the grooves of the plane-frame. F is the plane-frame, which is mounted between the ways D D in the usual way of mounting a sliding frame. In this frame I secure a plane-bit, g, so that its cutting-edge `.vill project through to the front sideand stand at an angle to the movement of the 4frame, so as to give a drawing cut.
ject somewhat beyond the ends. fHeretot'ore it has been usual to plane these ends olic by hand, but by the use of the above-described machine the box can be placed upon the table H and the rough and projecting ends presented to the reciprocating plane, and so as to be easily and perfectly trimmed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v A box-trimming machine, consisting of the vertically-reciprocating plane-frameF, with its angularIy-placed plane-bit g, operated between the adjustable ways D, which are secured to upright guide-posts A, and the table or platform H, substantially as above described.
In witnessrwhereof I hereunto set my hand' and seal. l
- GEORGE SWAN. [L. s] Witnesses:
