IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,863, dated January 4, 1876; application filed December 7, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. REYNoLDs, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification Figure 1 being a side view of a corset provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a front view of the same.

Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.

My improvement is upon such corsets as are employed as a medium of support for skirts; and my invention consists in combining with a corset shoulder-straps attached only at their upper or rear ends, and to the back of the corset, and arranged to extend thence forward over the shoulders, and downward in front to meet the skirts, thus leaving the front of the corset free from constraint or disarrangement thereby. To the back B of the corset two short straps, O G, of no peculiar construction or arrangement, are attached, for supporting the backs of the skirts. .An adjustable con-- neetion with the skirts is conveniently made by means of buckles a a, provided, respectively, with self-retaining books I) I), into which are booked the eyes 0 c of suspension safetypins d d, to be passed through the bands of the skirts for attachment thereto. An adjustable connection between the straps and the skirts is suitably made by means of buckles g g, provided with suspending-hooks h h, into which take the eyes 2' c of safety-pins l Z, all similar to the means of connection between the back-straps c c and the skirts, as above described; but I do not confine myself to any special means of connecting the straps with the skirts. Thus the straps D D have no necessary connection with the front A of the corset. They may be connected with each other near their points, ff, of attachment to the corsets by means of an elastic band, E.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A corset provided with shoulder-straps D D', attached at one end to the back of the corset only, provided at their free ends with suitable devices for holding the skirts, and ar- I ranged to extend forward over the shoulders of the wearer, and downward in front to the waist, for sustaining the fronts of skirts, substantially as and for the purpose herein specifie'd.
