June 25, 'A E SMH-H HYPODERMIC sYRNGE Filed March 24, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 1'. 4 .B2-J INVENTOR..
ARTHUR E. SMITH ATTORNEY.
June 25, v1929. A. E. SMITH HYPODERMIC SYRINGE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2` Filed March 24, 1927 i the palm of an operators hand.V At the low- Y by an upward movement and a shiftable movement of the tubular portion 29 about the vertical axis of a post 31 shown in detail in Fig. 8. The post 31 may be Vsecured to the cross bar 13 in any desired manner and is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed bayonet slots 32. Y
For normally retaining the cap 27 in a down position I provide in thertubular portion 29 a coiled spring 33. This coiled spring 33 is adapted to operate between a transverse pin 34 secured in the post 31 land another transverse pin 35 secured in the tubular portion 29 of the cap.V The pin 35 is positioned to move along the bayonet slots 32.
Associated with Vthe cap27 I'prov'ide a plunger mechanism 36 which includes a plurality of telescopic tubular members shown as two in number at 37 and'38., The uppermost of these members is secured in any desiredmanner to the top plate 3() inside ofthe body 28. The lowermost telescopic member 38 is v'provided with a frustro-conical tip 39 adapted to operate inside of the barrel 12 of the syringe. A.V spring 40 is located within these 'tubular telescopic members and bears between the top plate'30 and the tip 39.
The plunger mechanism 36 also includes a rod 41 which is fitted within' the spring 40 and has a cross bar or handle 42 upon one end.` This handle 42V is adapted to be engaged by er end'of the rod740 I provide an enlarged head 43, d
My ampule 11 which is used in connection with my improved syringe'and shown in detail in Fig.r10, comprises a body 44 having a tapered end portion 45 which is closed by and terminates in a breakable tip 46. The taper Cil of the .end portion 45 corresponds substantially to the taper of the conical recess 23 in' the hypodermic needle'19. The tip 46 may be rendered Vreadily separable from -the' ampule by scoring, notching, etching, or otherwise weakening it as indicated at 47 (see Fig. 11). Intermediate the len 9th of the tapered portion 45 and encircling it just above the scoring 47 I provide a collar 48 of rubber or other material. y The outer surface of the collar 48 may also taper at approximately the same angle as does the surface of the conical frecess 23 of the hypodermic needle 19. Y
The open end of the ampule is closed by a stopper V49 which is preferably of rubber and which fits the ampule tightly, enabling it to act as a piston to expel the contents of theam- To prepare the ampulell for use in the syringelO the tip 46 is removed from the ampule atl 47. The vvampule is then inserted into the barrelV 12 of the syringe so that thetapered end portion 45 of the ampule is positioned in the conical recess 23 of the hypoderinic needle. 19. the cap 27 of the syringe having been previously swung out of engagement with the barrel as previously described and shown in Fig. 2. I'Vhen the ampule has been inserted in the syringe, the outer peripheral surface of the collar 48 of the ampule inipiuges against the surface of the conical recess 23 of the hypodermic needle and as the cap 27 is swung to Va closed position as shown in Fig. l the conical surface of the tip 39 of the lowermost telescopic member 38 abuts the upper edges of the ampuie, centers it and retains it in a correct position.
'Ilo discharge the contents of the ainpulel the operator grasps the handle 42 and moves the plunger rod 4l inwardly until the head 43 abuts the stopper 49 of the aiupule. Upon a further movement of the plunger rod and head 42 the stopper will be forced towards the tapered end of the ampule acting as a piston to expel the contents of the ainpule out through the hypodermic needle 19.
As pressure is applied on the plunger head 42 to move the stopper 49 downward the collar 48 of the ampule will be forced into very tight engagement with the conical surface of the recess 23 in the hypoderinic needle 19, the more pressure required to move the stopper the tighter the collar 48 will engage the conical recess, thus creating a fluid tight seal between the ampule and the syringe. Also as pressure is applied to the stopper the ampule will, through the medium of the collar 4 8, exert pressure on the body 2O of the hypodermic needle 19 and force its outer conical surface into tight engagement with the surface of the conical aperture 17 of the tip 16, thus preventing any accidental movement of the hypodermic needle.
By providing the apertures 14 in the body 12 of the syringe. sight openings are formed through which the contents of the ampule. will be visible and so that the movement of the stopper 49 and the extent to which the contents of the ampule have been discharged may be readily observed by the operator of.
the syringe.
InFigs. 12 and 13 I have shown a syringe 50 provided with a modified form of cap 51. The syringe 50 is similar in construction to the syringe 10 shown in Fig. 1, having a hollow tubular body or barrel wherein equally spaced elongated apertures 54 are provided. Atip 56. similar to the tip 16 shown in Fig. 6, detaehably engages the lower end of the barrel 53 and is provided with a conical aperture 57. A hypodermic needle 58 similar to the hypodermic needle 19 shown in Fig. 6, is detaehably positioned in the conical recess 57 ofthe tip 56. The hypodermic needle 58 comprises a body portion 58 having a conical recess 58b therein which communicates with a hollow tube 58C. The cap 51 comprises a llti Il lY inflar-loa enp shaped body portion 59 the sides ot whieh are adapted to be positioned `over the ond portion oi? the syringe barrel 53. ln the side and adjacent the lower edgsge oi" the body 59 l provide an inwardly er.tending` pin hll. llhe ripper portion oi1 the barrel 53 above the eros-i bar is provided with a bayonet slot et) Fig. 13) :in which the pin lili'L oit the cap il i s adapted to aetnate.

the plonger niieehanism 6l also includes a plonger rod G6 which fitted within tho spriiigr (.35 and has cross bar or handle Gli' provided at one end and an enlarged head Gti provided at its other end.
lllhen it is desired to `lise my inodilied torni i 50 i'or making` an injection the i rotated so that the pin 5)Pu may ride in the verti fa portion of the bayonet slot G() as the cap liitedupwardly. lifter remov- :ingi the oai 5l an ampnle ll is inserted into the barrel 5S et the syringe after having' been prepared tor injectingl purposes as previously desrribed. l'he Cap is then replaced and the transwerse partition (lift of the telescopic 1nembei' (53 abats the upper edge of the ampnle while the lowermost portion of the member G3 surrounds a portion oit the top end o' the ainpnle, thus retaining,l the ainpule in a eorreet position.
