SELP-ADJUSTING SCREW CAP.
Application led July 19, 1927. Serial No. 208,961.
This invention relates to screw caps for containers such as gasoline tanks or other like purposes where ascrew-threaded cap 1s re quired to be frequently and rapldlyremoved and replaced, and is intended as an improvement upon my device for which a patent has been applied for and filed on the 24th March 1927 under Serial No. 177,981.
The object of this invention is to provide a screw cap which, whilst being self-registering as regards the correct engagement of the vdivided screw-thread, is of such a form that the cap proper cannot be misplaced or lost, and in which the retaining ring cannot be unintentionally removed from its corresponding screw-thread, but is automatically retained in its correct position together with the cap.
The device is clearly described by the aid of the drawings herewith forming part of this application in which:

Noting that similar numerals in the difier- I ent views indicate identical parts the screwthreaded spigot secured to the tank is indicated by 5. This is engaged by the screwthreaded ring 6 with the tapered exterior periphery 7. Secured to the ring 6 by the hinge-member 8 is the cap 9- of the usual form but havin@ a shallow cylindrical recess 10 with circular side 11 ta ered to engage the corresponding shapel 7 ormed to engage it as a seat when the cap 9'is in the closed position.
A sprin plunger 12 secured radially in the ring 6 by the screw plug 13 tends to project into and engage the angular slot 14 cut 1n the screw-thread of the spigot 5, the shape of the slot being such that when the plunr is in engagement with it any movement of e ring 6 in one direction is prevented, but movement in the other direction is available and results in releasing the plunger 12 from engagement with the slot 14.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the internally screwthreaded spigot necessitates some modification to the hinge which is there shown in a form which permits effective workshop metho s.
A transverse recess 15 is madeA in the ring 6 to receive the separate hinge-member 16 secured to the inner periphery of the cap 9. This construction enables both the cap 9 and the ring 6 to be easily machined owing to the absence of projecting portions.
The recess 15 is bridge-d by the hinge pin 17 the latter being received by a deep slot at 18the upper sides of which are afterwards drifted over by a chisel to secure the pin within the slot.
From the above description it is obvious that when the cap as a whole is inscrewed to the point when the upper surface of' the ring 6 reaches a predetermined position the spring plunger 12 arrests further motion. and the cap 9 may be swung over, leaving the tank aperture open, and when the hinged cap has been replaced both ca and ring may be screwed down as a who e the sprmg plunger being freed from engagement by the process.
Having now particularly described my invention what I claim and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a transversely di vided but hingedly connected screw-threaded cap for closing the orifice of a hollow screwthreaded spigot, of an angular arcuate. and substantially horizontal recess in one of the said screw members, said recess being substantially parallel lon itudinally with the said screw thread an gradually inclined from the exterior surface of the thread to an abrupt termination at the deep end, a cylindrical recess holding a spring plunger in the other corres onding said screw member the extremity o said plunger being adapted to engage the said inclined arcuate recess and to be releasable therefrom when the said screw member is turned in one direction but not in the other direction when said plunger re isters with said recess.
