JULIEN MORINVILLE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
AIR COMPRESSOR.'
Application filed November 17, 1927.
This invention relates to improve-ments in air compressor.
The object of my invention is to produce an apparatus for compressing air or the like with greater efficiency and with less expenditure of power than has been possible with the apparatus now being used.
A further object of my invention is to provide a ready means of controlling the volume' vand modifications may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a party of this invention and wherein like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation view of an air compressor according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged segmentary detail View of one of the supplementary air inlets of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross-section on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a casing having an open lower end and a reduced or a dome-shape upper end 2 provided on top with a conical chamber 3 in which is provided the air outlet 4. In said chamber 3 is provided the bracket or support 5, in which is journalled the upper end of the main shaft 6, mounted centrally of said casing.
The casing 1 is preferably provided with a plurality of lateral and horizontal hollow ribs or embossments 7, which are providedr with the air inlets 8 closed by the threaded plugs 9, the purpose of these air inlets being to increase, by opening them, when desired, the volumeof air tobe compressed.
Serial No. 233,991.
The open end of the casing 1 is closed by means of the bottom plate 1U which may be suitably secured to the flanged lower end 11 of the casing, by means of the bolts 12said bottom plate being supported upon the standards or legs 13.
The said bot-tom plate 10 is provided with one or more air inlet openings 14, in each of which is mounted the suction fan 15 which is suitably supported in the brackets 16 actuated by the shaft and pinion 17 co-acting with the bevelled gear 18 mounted on the horizontal shaft 19, located in the lower end of the casing 1, and journalled in suitable bearings 20, one end of said shaft extending outward of said casing and provided with a pulley 21, by ipeaps of which power is transmitted to the sia" The lower end of the shaft 6 is suitably supported by means of the bracket 22 and 23 is a bevelled gear mounted on the lowermost end of the said shaft 6, co-acting with the bevelled gear 24 mounted upon the horizontal shaft 19, whereby motion is imparted to the vertical shaft 6.
The vertical central main shaft 6 is preferably square in cross-section, and upon said shaft are mounted a plurality of blades 25. 'I he blades 25 extend from the said shaft 6 to adjacent the inner wall of said casing and are mounted at a suitable pitch or an incline, so as to readily compress the air into the reduced dome portion 2 of the casing. The said blades 25 are preferably secured upon each face of said square shaft 6, in an helical formation, by means of the angle plates 26 which are suitably secured to the said shaft 6.
It will readily be understood that the air is sucked into the casing 1 by means of the fans 15, the said sucked air being then en gaged by the blades 25 and compressed into the reduced or dome portion 2 of the casing, and then passes through the outlet 4.
To increase or decrease the volume of air to be compressed, the air inlets 8, in the ribs 7, are opened or closed by unscrewing or screwing in the plugs 9. By this simple means, the air compression may be regulated at will.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. An air compressor comprising a casing having an upper reduced end and an open lower end,` an air outlet in said reduced end, a bottom plate adapted to close said open end, said plate having an air inlet therein, a vertical central sli aft suitably journalled in said `easing, blades mounted upon- Sd Shaft? a:
Cil
fan inounted in said air inlet7 and means to aetuate said Vertieal central shaft and said fan.
2. An air eoi'npressor comprising a casing having an upper -reduced .end Land an ,open lower end, an air outlet in said reduced end, a bottom plate adapted to close said open end, said plate having an air inlet therein, a Vertical central shaft suitably journalled in said casing, blades mounted upon said shaft, means to aotuate said Vertical central shaft, a plurality of "horizontal and lateral hollow ribs in the side of said easing, air inlets in said ribs, and means to Control said air inlets.
8. An air compressor Comprising `a easing having an upper reduced end and an open lower end, an air inlet in said reduced end, a bottom plate adapted to close vsaid open end7 said plate having an air inlet therein, a vertical Central shaft suitably journalled in said keasing, blades mounted upon said shaft, a fan mounted in said air inlet, a shaft upon said fan, a horizontal shaft adjacent the lower end of said casing suitably journalled therein and extending outward of said Casing, and means on said shaft to impart motion to said vertical central shaft and to said shaft con trolling said fan.
Signed at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this 10th day of November, 1927.
JULIEN MoRiNViLLE.
