This invention relates to certain improvements in combination-locks, applicable to storehouses,dwellings,jsafes, vaults, &c., and de-': signed to increase the security of the same@ against the efforts of burglars-and thieves. It 3 consists, principally, in anumber or series of 5 bolts, so arranged with small gear-wheels and connecting-rods, or their equivalents, that the withdrawal of one bolt shoots into place and locks another, until a certain number of turns are made, which constitutes the combination at which all of the bolts are withdrawn and the door unlocked. It also consists in the particular construction of a bell-ringing device, which, operating in connection with the bolts, keeps up an incessant ringing during any attempt to unlock the same. The invention also consists in other details of construction, hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claims.
In the drawing, A represents the frame or case of my improved combination-lock. B B B are three bolts, which are located in guideways, and connected by pivoted connectingrods 0 G C with the double cranks D D D of the three different-sized gear-wheels E E E, which said bolts, connecting-rods, and wheels constitute the combination part of the lock. F is a detachable frame-piece, fastened inside the look by means of keys, in which frame are journaled the ends of the crankshafts of the gear-wheels. G is the main shaft of the gear-wheel E, which is made to project on each side of the lock far enough to receive the key H. that it will be seen that the peculiar shape of the said shaft serves a twofold purpose, one
of which is to prevent keys ot' the ordinary construction from being used upon the lock, and the other is to ascertain accurately the position of the key-shaft with respect to the dial-plate, so as to find the unlocking position. To determine the number of turns for opening the combination an index-hand, k, is used.
