PERFORATING DEVICE.
Application filed October 16, 1926. Serial No. 142,025.
This invention relates to a perforating device.
An object of the invention is to provide a pcrforator which can be applied to a printing machine and can be permanently secured thereto without in any way affecting the operation of the machine as a printing machine and so related to the rest of the machine that perforation takes place only when desired.
A further object isto providermeans whereby a printed sheet which is also to be perforated can bever-y accuratelyr alined with respect to the perforator.

rlhe form of the invention s hown in the drawings is a preferred form, although it is understood that modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts and vin the character of materials used maybe adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim. In its general aspect the invention is employed in connection with the usual perforator bar having a spiral on one end operated by connection with the pivot lever,`
which in turn is connected to an operating plunger. This plunger is adapted to be actuated through the operation of the ordinary pressure plate of a printing press or machine. In my invention, however, the plunger does not in any position extend above the top of the base on which it is mounted. It is never more than flush with the top of the base and in order to be operated requires contact with an operating button which is adapted to be mounted on the pressure plate, preferably disposed in a predetermined position on thetympan sheet which is ordinarily` adjustably registered on the face of the pressure plate. The location of this operating button on the pressure plate is determined by first disposing on the perforator and over the plunger a temporary button alined with the plunger, the upper surface of which button is coated with ink so that as the pressure plate .is moved downward the cont-act between the upper surface,y of this button and the surface of the tympan sheet will mark on said sheet the point over which the operating button is to be centred, sothat when the pressure plate is ldepressed it will be alined properly with the plunger which it is to operate.
When it is desired merely to yprint and not to perforate, all that is required is to remove the operating button from ythe pressure plate, which can then move down toward the perforator without actuating the plunger on the` perforator, because said plunger ylies beneath or not more than fiush with the surface of the perforator, y y
The invention further recites in particular means whereby a temporary marking button can be attached to and removed from the perforator. f
In the preferred form of the invention shown in thedrawings, I provide av perf0ra tor base 10, the upper surface of which is provided with a longitudinal recess 11 adapted to receive a perforating bar 12 having a rounded lower edge 13, concave sides 14: which merge into a series of perforating or scoring teeth 15. bar is provided with a pin 16 journaled preferably in a plate 17 adjustably fastened against the end of the block. The other end of the perforator bar is provided with a spiral element 18 journaled in the wall of a One end of this perforator l cylinder 19. The cylinder y19 is secured to the base 10 by pins 2O in the present instance, although it may be made integral with the base. A pin 21 acts as a pivot `for a lever 22, one end of which is in the form of a yoke 23 embracing spiral 18 and the other end of which is notched as at 24 rto receive a lip 25 on the lower end of a plunger 26, located in a bore 27 of the cylinder 19. A spring 28 arranged inside of the plunger 26 has a normal tendency to force the plunger upwardly and allows it to move downwardly. The top of the plunger 26 is concave and the relation of the plunger to the parts of the perforator with which it is associated and thus far described, is such that the top of the plunger never extends above the highest part of the cylinder 19. The top wall of the cylinder is provided with a transverse groove 30 and lateral grooves 31 and 32. lVires 33 and 34- are adapted to be inserted in the lateral grooves and are connected at their opposite ends together and to a spring wire or blade 35 supporting a marking button 36, the lower face 37 of which is convex and the upper face 38 of which is flat preferably and adapted to receive ink. This marking button mounted on these wires, which can be quickly associated with the cylinder 19, is adapted only temporarily to be connected with the perforator and when so connected is disposed directly over the top of the plunger 26. When the marking button is in position the pressure plate 39is brought down, this pressure plate being preferably provided with a filler or backing face l0 and the usual tympan sheet 11. As this tympan sheet contacts with the upper surface of the marking button 36 an ink mark is made on the sheet, which indicates the point of alineme'nt with thevaxis ofthe button 36. The

Therefore, by providing a plunger on a perforator which will not extend above the surface of its socket, I can leave the perforator attached to the machine when ordinary printing without perforation is to be done. I can eii'ect perforation at any time merely by attaching the operating button to the pressure plate, preferably to the tympan sheet which has previously been marked in the manner described by the use of a marking button, so as to enable the operating button to be accurately positioned. lVhenthe marking button 36'is depressed the transverse slot 30 will permit the wirev 35, which supports said marking button, to go below the top surface of the cylinder 19` whereby the movement of the pressure plate of the printing machine will not be interrupted.
lVhat I claim is:
A device to be used on a printing machine which comprises a pressure plate having a tympan sheet mounted on the front face thereof, a base, a rocker bar mounted on said base, said base having a bore therein, a depressible plunger in said bore,'means con` neeting the plunger and the rocker bar, the
uppermost position ofthe plunger bringing its upper edge flush with the upper surface of the base, an operating button having a rearwardly extending pin alined withthe center of a mark on the tympan sheet and laterally extending fastening means on said button to fasten it to the tympan sheet, whereby as the pressure plate is moved upwardly toward the base of the printing machine the button will be in alinement with the bore and operate the plunger, whereby y the operation of the rocker bar is achieved.
