FOUNTAIN PEN.
Application led MayflO, 1928. vSerial No. 276,733.
This invention relates to fountain pens and and threaded, as indicated at 8, for engage the improvements are directed to novel and ment with the reduced port-ion 9 of the tubuunique means for controlling the flow of a lar member 10. The separation of these writing fluid therein. parts permits convenientaccess to the in- 60 Primarily the object of the invention reterior of the pen when it becomes necessary sides in the provision of means, in the form of to replace the flexible member 7 or for gena valve member, adapted to cooperate withA eral cleaning purposes l certain passageways to check the -flow of a Upon inspection of Fig. 1, it will be obwriting fluid to the nib or pen portion thereof. served that said tubular member 10 supports 10 Another object is to provide specially a nozzle member 11, the forward end ofthe formed cooperatingparts adapted to co-act latter extending beyond said member 10 for with said valve member to accomplish the kthe purpose of supporting the forward end purpose aforesaid. ofthe nibs oi' pen portionf12. In the emboditill another object of the invention is to ment of the invention, illustrated in the draw- 70 l5 provide a valve member normally seatinging, said ink-retaining flexible member 7 is over an orifice in the discharge end of a penstretched over the rear portion of said nozretaining means, said member being special- Zle member 11 and communicates with the ly formed to permit its convenient reciprocaaxial bore 13 of the latter, the top portion of tion to effect the openingk and closing of said said nozzle member 11 being longitudinally orifice. grooved, as indicated at 14, While the wall be- A still further object is to provide a pen tween said bore 13 and groove 14 being pro orl nib portion having a depression conformvided with an orifice 15. Thus the series of ing to the configuration ofa portion of said passageways, above described.` .mutually covalve member for sealing the passageway Operate to permit thepassage of the ink from S0 communicating with the above orifice. the flexible member 7 to the nibs or pen porlfVith these objects in view, together with tion 12. This construction is similar to the others which will appear as the description ordinary type of fountain pen, and as will proceeds, the invention resides in the novel presently appear, it is my purpose to provide formation, combination, and arrangement of means whereby the flow of ink through said 85 parts, all as will be described more fully here- COmmunlCatlng passages may be conveniently inafter, illustrated in the drawings, and par- CODFOlledLtO the end that danger of leakage ticularly pointed out in the claims. may be entirely ObVlated.
In said drawings: Said means comprises a valve 16 having a Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional ball portion normally seat-ing over said orifice 9c view of a fountain pen embodying my invenl5 and pOSltlVely preclilding the passage of tion, e ink when in said position. In order to permit Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating free and easy manipulation of said valve from the forward portion of the article in plan, and the exterior of the article, the thumb-piece 17, @Spegzdly depicting certain slot means arrising laterally from the shank portion 1S, ex- 95 4o ranged in the same. tends through a slot 19 formed in the tubular Fig'. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken member 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and by on the plane of the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. the simple expedient of retracting said Fig. 4 is a plan view of the nozzle portion thumb-piece 17, said valve is moved rearof the article illustrating the discharge ori- Wardly to uncover said orifice 15. 100 lice and its communicating groove. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, said groove 14 Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the nibs or pen is arcuate in cross-section and conforms to portion; and the contour of the ball portion of said valve Fig. 6 is a plan view of the valve member. and in order to complete the structure, the Referring now in particular to the accompen portion 12, see Figs. 1 and 5, is pressed 105 panying drawing, wherein like characters of out, adjacent the rear thereof, to define a dereference denote similar parts throughout the pression 20, similarly corresponding in crosssevei'al views, let 5 denote the handle portion section to the upper contour of the ball porhaving central bore S defining a chamber tion of said valve. rThis construction will be for the reception of a flexible member 7 formreadily understood upon inspection of Fig. 3. 110
ing a reservoir for the writing iiuid. The Thus the depression 20 and groove 14 imite forward portion of said handle 5 is shouldered to form a passageway substantially conform- CIK ing to the diameter of said ball portion and providing a convenient area for the reciprocation of said valve.
I/Vhen the pen is to be filled, said valve member is retracted to expose said orifice l5, whereupon the usual hinged member 2l, coacts with member 22 to depress the flexible Vmember 7, and a reverse operation after the nibs are dipped into the ink permits the filling of the pen. Said valve is now returned to the position shown in Fig. l, and the usual cap covering the nibs placed in position.
From the foregoing it is apparent that said valve member positively7 precludes the escape of the ink regardless of the position of the 'fountain pen in the pocket. Vhen writing is to be done, said valve member is retracted, as aforesaid, and in view of the slight'resiliency between the ball portion of the valve and the depression form in the nibs, said valve will be held in the retracted position during the use of the article.
lhile the present is a disclosure 'of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, as various changes in the minoi` details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In a fountain pen, a tubular handle deining a reservoir for ink, a tubular member having a lateral vslot and connected to said handle, a nozzle member carried by said tubular member, having its top face longitudinally grooved and provided with an orifice extending from said groove to the bore of said nozzle member, a pen portion having its rear lportion depressed and cooperating with said groove to present a passageway substantially circular in cross-section, and a valve member having a ball portion normally seated over said orifice and having a thumb-piece extending through the slot in said tubular member and adapted to be manipulated to reciprocate said ball portion in said circularl passageway to open and close said orifice.
2. 'In a fountain pen, a tubular handle deining a reservoir for ink, a tubular member having a lateral slot and connected to said handle, a nozzle member carried by said tubular member, having its top face-longitudinally grooved and provided with an orifice extending from said groove to the bore of said nozzle member, a pen portion carried by said nozzle member and a valve member normally seated over said orifice and having a thumb-piece extending through the slot in said tubular member and adapted to be manipulated to reciprocate said valve in said longitudinal groove in said nozzle member to open and close said oriliee.
In testimonyv whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT I. BRONG.
