This invention relates to pressing and ironing machines such as are used in laundries, and particularly to the type of such machines wherein the pressing members are brought into engagement with the Work by hant, power means being subsequently applied during the actual pressing operation.
Generally, this invention embodies improvements over the pressing machines described in the co-pending application Serial No. 119,086 filed June 28, 1926, by Dana H. Benjamin and which on June 19, 1928 became Patent No. 1,674,274.
Specifically, the objects of my invention are to provide additional safety features in such a machine and means for increasing the speed of operation of the machine; and in eluding automatic latching means for holding the parts in full open position of the machine, starting means for the power motor semi-automatically actuated as the press is closed, and automatically timed mechanical braking means for positioning the press members in open or closed position.
Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.

Referring now to Fig. 1 the principal parts of the pressing machine are the base or frame 1 upon which is fixed the padded garment support or buck 2 and movably mounted the heated ironing member 5 adapted to co-operate with the buck 2 to press or iron articles placed between them. The ironing member is carried by an arm 4 pivoted at 4 upon the extension 1 of the frame of the machine, for movement to open or close the press.
Pivotedupon the arm 4 at the point 7 and adjustable with the arm by means of the handle 10 fast upon the screw 12 which extends through the threaded web 11 of the arm, is a member 7 provided with a depending arm as shown. Upon the rear end of the arm 4 is a weight 6. It will be seen that the arm 4 carrying the ironing member 5, the counter weight 6 and the member 7 form a unit movable about the pivot point 4 and balanced to seek the open position of the press.
A handle 13 is provided for convenient hand operation of this unit to close the press; and to thedepending arm of the member 7 is operatively secured power means for applying pressure to the ironing member in closed position of the press as will be described.
Upon the base of the press is a motor 14. connected through the coupler 17 to drive plane of line 14 of Figs.
through a gear reduction indicated generally by the rcference numeral 18 a shaft 19 on which is mounted a plate carrying the crank pin 20 which may beprovided with a roller as shown. Pivotally mounted at 21 is a pressure lever 22 the lower arm of which is provided with a slot in which the crank pin projects so that oscillation of thelever 22 would result from continuous rotation of shaft 19. To a laterally extending arm on the lever 22 at the point 23 is connected the link 24 which in turn is connected through the pair of links 25 to the member 7 at the point 9, the arrangement of the links 24 and 25 being obviously that of a toggle. Pivotally mounted at 27 is a hook shaped member 28 provided with a cam surface 29 adapted by suitable movement of the hook to engage an extension such as the roller 26 at the joint of the toggle referred to. A link 30 extending between the hook and the upper extremity. of the lever imparts motion to the hook upon movement of the lever, in a manner to be described.
What has thus far been described appears in the patentabove referred to.
The press is provided with suitable yielding and ajustable latch means adapted to normally and positively maintain the pressing head in open position, capable of actuation by a normal method of closing a press of this kind to release said latch and permit the head to descend to closed position. For this purpose the frame extension 1? has pivoted thereto a latch lever 36 provided with an abutment 36 and a limiting finger 36, said latch lever being yieldingly advanced toward latching position by a spring 37, and having one of its arms connected to a rod 38 extending to the front of the machine, where it has a fold or projection extending through a slot 39 in an arm pivotally mounted for actuation by the usual press closing handle 13. On the swinging arm 4 is mounted a stop member 34 adjustable by a screw 35, the stop 34 being adapted to wipe over the curved portion of the latch arm 35 and to also cooperate with the latch ing abutment 36.
Fig. 13 shows the parts in open press position, *ith the head latched up by the engagement of the abutment 34 beneath the abutment 36, finger 36 limiting latching movement of the arm 36 by its engagement with a side extension of the abutment 34. To close the press the hand is applied to the handle 13 with downward pressure, which turns latch 36 in the counterclockwise direction, Fig. 13, and releases or separates abutments 34, 3W, permitting the press head to be moved downwardly to closed position by continued downward pressure of the hand. As the head carrying arm 4 moves to open position the abutment 34 rides or wipes over the curved edge of the latch 36 until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 13, in latching engagement beneath the abutment 36. The lost motion resulting from the slot 39 in the handle is provided to make allowance for the varying angular relation between the parts.
Actuation of the motor 14 is initiated by the control handle 4.1 which controls the switch 32 through a bell crank lever 42 mounted upon the shaft 43, and the linkage illustrated. Mount-ed upon the shaft 19 is a timing switch 44 whereby actuation of the motor is interrupted upon movement of the crank pin 20 to the position shown in either Figs. 1 or 2-; with the parts shown in the position Fig. 1, movement of the control lever 41 upwards will thus effect movement of the crank pin in a clockwise direction, to the position shown in Fig. 2; and likewise return motion of the control lever 41 will return the crank pin in the-same direction,
which the crank pin link 30 owing to the lost motion to its originaliposition; this runaround motor drive arrangement being well known in this and many other arts.
It will be obvious that by the arrangement described movement of the control lever 41 will be immediately followed by corresponding movement of the ressure lever 22 to the corresponding position at one end of its throw.
In order to insure stopping of the lever 22 at the end of its throw I provide braking means as follows: Fixed upon the shaft 19 is a drum 45, which may be the disc upon 20 is mounted, and adjacent to which are mouted for co-operation therewith a pair of brake shoes 46 and 46; upon the lower extremity of the pressure lover I provide a projection 47 which is adapted to engage one of the brake actuating members 48 or 48 at the end of the lever stroke, to apply the bral'e and thus secure the shaft 19 and therefore the lever 22 in such position.
As the toggle moves from the position of Fig. 1 toward that of Fig. 3 movement of the hook member 28 is prevented by an arcuate finger 40 which may be integral with the hook as shown.
Secured upon the shaft 43 is an arm 49, its free end being secured, as shown, with the link 50. The link is provided at its opposite end with a slot through which passes a pin 51 secured in the hook member. By this arrangement when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 movement of the control handle 41 to start the motor 14 is impossible. -When by closing the press the toggle attains the position shown in Fig. 3 however, upward motion of the control lever 41 to start the motor will cause through the linkage referred to, clockwise motion of shaft 43 and the arm 49, co-operating with the link 50, will force the hook to engagement with the extension 26 (Fig. 3) whereupon continued motion of the shaft 43 may initiate actuation of the motor. This mot-ion of the hook is independent of the connection shown between these two members.
As the motor causes rotation of the shaft 19 to move the crank pin from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 2 the pressure lever 22 is likewise moved from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 2. This causes through the link 30 movement of the hook to the position of Fig.2, which by means of the cam surface 29 straightens the toggle from its position of Fig, 3 to that of Fig. 2, to thus apply pressure to the member 7 to compress the article between the pressing members. This further motion of the hook is independent ofthe shaft 43 owing to the slot shown in the link 50. At the same time the pivot 23 is moved upward to produce further pressure, the arm of the lever Car between the points 21 and 23 forming a third toggle member, and with the link 24 a second toggle joint at 23.
After sufficient pressing time has elapsed the control lever 41 is returned to the position of Fig.1 causing in the manner described a return of the parts to their original position, the arm 4 returning to raised position as soon as the toggle is released by the hook, spring 52 acting upon fingers 53 projecting from the links 25 assisting in breaking the toggle in a manner which will be obvious.
In order to accelerate motion of the parts in operation of the press I provide a pair of springs 31 extending from the base of the press to the arm of the movable member whereby the pressing member 5 may be quickly raised to open position. A spring 32 connects with the hook to similarly return it to the position of Fig. 1; and a spring 33 is connected to the link 24 to cause the toggle to closely follow the closing motion of the press.
In actual operation of the press, after laying the article to be pressed upon the buck 2 the operator simply grasps the handle 13 and the control lever 41 and exerts pressure to move them together; the various parts of the mechanism functioning thereupon generally in the sequence in which they have been described.
To open the press however, it is merely necessary to lower the control lever to its original position.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extending arm, power means, operating means connecting said arm thereto to effect pressure between said members, and comprising a pair of toggle members adapted to be extended by press closing movement, means for locking said toggle members in said extended position, said power means being associated with said locking means for actuating the same and associated with said tog gle members for exerting pressure therelhrough to said arm, adjacent portions of one of said toggle members and the member with which it is connected being arranged to overlie to prevent overthrow of said toggle, and yieldable means operative between said adjacent portions to break the toggle upon release of said pressure and said locking means.
2. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable close upon the other, latch means arranged to lock said movable member in open position, and a handle upon said movable memto open and i ber, said handle being associated with said latch means to release said member upon initial movement of said handle to effect closing of said press.
3. In a pressing machine,a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and balanced to move to open position, latch means arranged to lock said movable member in open position, and a handle upon said movable member, said handle being associated with said latch means to release said member upon initial movement of said handle to effect closing of said press.
4. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable by the operator to open and close upon the other, power means adapted to effect pressure between the members when closed, latch means arranged to lock said movable member. in open position, and a handle upon said movable member, said handle being associated with said latch means to release said member upon initial movement of said handle to effect closing of said press.
,5. In. a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of'pressinginembers mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and balanced to move to open position and having an extending arm, power means, operating means connecting said arm thereto to effect pressure between said members when closed, latch means arranged for engagement to lock said member in said open position, a handle on said movable member, said handle being in operative connection with said latch to release the latching engagement upon initial movement of said handle to effect closing of said press, and a lost motion in said connection to allow for said press closing movement.
6. In a pressing machine, a frame, a-pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extending arm, motor means, a crank driven thereby and a braking member associated with said crank, a pressurelevcr associated with said crank for oscillatory movement, a pair of toggle members connected between said arm and said lever and arranged to be extended by closing movement of said movable pressing member, means having actuating connection with said lever for lockin said toggle members in said extended relation, said lever being adapted to exert pressure through said toggle members to said arm, means for energizing said motor means, means for automatically de-energizing said motor means upon completion of a stroke of said lever, and brake means aring member, means ranged for actuation by said lever at the end of its stroke to bear against said braking member. p
7. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extending arm, motor means, a crank driven there-- by and a braking member associated with said crank, a pressure lever associated with said crank for oscillatory movement, a pair of toggle'members connected between said arm and said lever and arranged to be extended by closing movement of said movable pressing member,., means having actuating connection with said lever for locking said toggle members in said extended relation, said lever being adapted to exert pressure through said tog le members to said arm, means for energizing said motor means, means for automatically de-energizing said motor means upon completion of a stroke of said lever and separate brake means arranged for individual actuation by said lever at the ends of its strokes to bear against said braking member.
8. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open an close upon the other and havin an extending arm, motor means, a crank riven there by and a braking-member associated with said crank, a pressure lever associated with said crank for oscillatory movement, a pair of toggle members connected between said arm and said lever and arranged to'be ex-- tended by closing movement of said movable pressing member,gmeans having actuating connection with said lever for locking said toggle members in said extended relation,
said lever being adapted to exert pressure through said toggle members t'o said arm means for energizmg said motor means, an means for automatically de-energizing said motor means upon completion of a stroke of said lever.
9. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mountedthereon, one of said members being movable to open an close upon the other and having an extendmg arm, motor means, a crank driventhere by and a braking member associated therewith, a pressure lever connected with said crank for oscillatory movement, a pair of toggle members connected between said arm, and said lever and arranged to be extended by closing movement of said movable press having actuating connection with said lever for-locking said toggle members in said extended relation, said lever being adapted to exert pressure through said toggle members to said arm, the arrangementbeing such that strokes of said lever effect respectively, locking of said toggle and pressure upon said arm, and release of said pressure and unlocking of said toggle, means for energizing said motor means, means for automatically de-energizing said motor means upon completion of a stroke of said lever, and brake means arranged for actuation by said lever at the end of said stroke to bear against said braking surface.
10. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressingv members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extend-- ing arm, motor means, a crank driven there by and a braking member associated therewith, a pressure lever connected with said crank for oscillatory movement, a pair of togglvmembers connected between said arm and said lever and arranged to be extended by closing movement of said movable pressing member, means having actuating connection with said lever for locking said toggle members in said extended relation, said lever being adapted to exert pressure through said toggle members to said arm, the arrangement being such that strokes of said lever effect respectively, locking of said toggle and pressure upon said arm, and release ofisaid pressure and unlocking means for energizin said motor means, means for automatica y tie-energizing said motor means upon completion of each stroke ofsaid lever, and brake means arranged for actuation by said lever at the end of said stroke to bear against said brakingsurface. 11. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one
of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extendingarm, power means, a pair oftoggle members connecting said arm and power means and arranged to be extended by closin movement of said pressing member, a hoo member adapted to lock said toggle in said extended position, said power means being associated with said toggle for exerting pressure therethrough upon said arm, control means for said power means and associated of said toggle,
with said hook member to move the same to lock said toggle.
12. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extending arm, motor means, a pair of toggle members connecting said power means with said arm and adapted to be extended by closing movement of said pressing member, an extension at the joint of said toggle, a hook adapted for pivotal movement to engage with said extension to lock said toggle in said extended position and provided with a cam surface cooperable with said extension upon further movement of said hook to straighten said toggle, said power means bepressure therethrough, control means for said power means, an operative connection between said control means and associated with said hook to move the same to look said toggle, and a lost motion in said connection whereby said further movement of said hook is accommodated.
13. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of relatively movable pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extending arm, means, a pair of toggle members connecting -said power means with said arm to effect pressure between said members and adapted to be extended by closing movement of said pressing members, an extension at the joint of said toggle, a hook adapted for pivotal movement to engage with said extension to lock said toggle in said extended position and provided with a cam surface cooperable with said extension to straighten said toggle upon further movement of said hook, said means including a power actuated oscillatory mem ber in operative connection with said hook to effect said further movement thereof, and provided with a projection connected with one of said toggle members to form a third toggle member adapted to be straightened to exert pressure upon said arm, control means for said means, and associated with said hook to effect said engagement thereof with said extension, and a lost motion in the connection between said oscillatory member and said hook whereby said engagement may be effected in advance of said further movement of said hook.
14. lln a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of relatively movable pressing members mounted thereon, an extending arm upon one of said members, power means, a pair of toggle members connecting said motor means with said arm to effect pressure between said members and adapted to be extended by closing movement of said pressing member, an extension at the joint of said toggle, a hook associated with said power means for pivotal movement to engage with said extension to lock said toggle insaid extended position and provided with a camsurface cooperable with said extension to straighten said toggle upon further movement of said hook, and a finger on said hook adapted to cooperate with said extension to prevent said movements of said hook pending said extending of said toggle members.

16. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon for relative opening and closing movement, one of said members being balanced to move from the other of said members, cooperating latch members upon said frame and said balanced member and adapted to lock said member in open position thereof, and a handle upon said member for closing the same upon the other member, said handle being in operative connection with one of said latch members to release said balanced member upon initial movement of said handle, to close the press. 7
17. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and closeupon the other member, means to efi'ect pressure between said members in closed position thereof, and comprising rotatable means having a crank, a pressure lever oscillatable by said crank and in operative connection with said movable member, whereby the strokes of said lever efi'ect pressure and release of. said movable pressing member, separate brake means eifective upon said rotatable means and engageable alternately for braking actuation by said lever at the ends of the strokes thereof.
18. In a pressing machine, a frame, a pair of pressing members mounted thereon, one of said members being movable to open and close upon the other and having an extending arm, power means, operatin means connecting said arm thereto, to e ect pressure between saidmembers and comprising a pair of toggle members adapted to be extended by press closing movement, means for looking said members in said extended position, said power means being associated with said locking means for actuation of the same and associated with said toggle members for exerting pressure therethrough to said arm, and yieldable means arranged to urge said locking means from tog le locking position.
