The invention relates to molding machines of that type in which wads of sand are projected at high speed into flasks and whlch are provided with a projector-head which is movable horizontally to fill all portions of the flask or form all portions of the mold. One object of the invention is to provide improved raising and lowering mechanism for adjusting the projector-head into different ositions and according to the height of the asks into which the wads of sand are discharged.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the description.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more p articularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

The invention is exem lified in a machine of the general type exhi ited in Patent No. 1,309,833 granted to us July 15, 1919, in which a projector-head is mounted on the free end of a horizontally swinging arm which is pivoted to the distal end of a jib to permit the projector-head to be moved horizontally to any desired point within a described range to project wads of sand into all portions of subjacent flasks. In the exemplication illustrated, the projector-head A comprises a casing a and a rotor a provided with a projector blade a2 which coacts with the casing to shear wads of sand from a stream fed into the Casin by a belt b. The details of this projectorcad may be in accordance with the construction set forth in an application led by us Feb. 28, 1924, Serial N o. 695,705. The shaft ai4 of the rotor ex tends longitudinally through the arm B, which is tubular for that purpose, to an electric motor D, the casing of which is fixed to the inner end of thearm B. The jib C comprises an outer tubular memberc, and an inner member c. The entire jib 1s adapted to swing horizontally, and the mner member c2 is adalpted to swing vertically to ralse o r lower t e projectorhead and its arm B, without interferin with the horizontal movement of the jointed structure, consistin of the jib and arm, and without varying t e anGle of deliver of the sand by the projector. l'lhe inner endl of the jib-member c2 is provided with a fork c which is pivoted by the horizontal pin c* to a socket c, which is mounted for horizontal rotation on a bracket or column c which may be of any suitable construction. Anti-friction bearings c are interposed betweev socket c and the supporting column c to render the jib freely movable in a horizontal plane. The outer end of jib member c2 is ivoted, as at c, to a bracket 0 which is provided with a socket to receive, and is 'iixedly secured to, the tube forming the jib-member c. The pivotal connection between member c and the horizontally rotatable socket c and the ivotal connection between the outer end o member c2 and the inner end of member c are adapted to permit member c2 to be swung vertically to raise and lower the member c and the projector-carrying arm which is pivoted to said member for horizontal'rotation. To permit the projector-carrying arm B and the parts carried thereby to be bodily raised and lowered without varyin their position relatively to the horizontal p ane, a connection is provided between bracket 0 and the horizontally rotatable socket c". This connection consists of a pair of rods 20 and 21, which form, in effect, with the jlb-member c2, a parallel linkage for supporting the jib-member c and maintaining it in its horizontal position. The inner ends of rods 20 and 21 extend through holes in the outer ends of a horizontal cross-shaft 23 which is pivotally mounted in the socket c, The outer ends of rods 20 and 21 extend through holes in the ends of a horizontal cross-shaft 25 which is pivotally secu-red in and extends through the upper portion of bracket c. Nuts 20 are threaded to the ends of rods 20, 21 to space shafts 23, 25 apart 'to correspondl with the distance between pivots c, cs. When the jihmember 02 is raised or lowered to correspondingly effect the horizontal plane of movement of the projector-head, rods 20, 21 will ermit this adjustment and maintain the horizontally` of the projector-carrying arm B, so that the angle at which the sand is delivered by the projector will not be varied, while the rojector remains free to be shifted horizontally to fill all portions of the asks.

An electric motor 30 is xedly mounted on member c2 and coupled to directly drive a shaft 31 which is journalled in and extends into a gear-housing 32 which is integrally formed with the member c2. Housing 32 is provided with a removable side-head 32El to provide access to the caring 1n the housing and with removable en -heads 32". A worm 33, fixed toshaft 31, meshes with a wormear 34 which is fixed to a cross-shaft 35 which is journalled in the lower portion of the housing 32. A winding drum 36 is fixedly secured to one projecting end of shaft 35, and a winding drum 37 is xedly secured to the opposite projecting end. A cable 38 has its ends coiled around and Y. secured to the drums respectively, and comprises a vertically extending loop 39 above the drums,
which passes over a pair of sheaves 40 and 41 which are rotatably mounted on arms 42 respectively, which are integral with, and project outwardly and u wardly from, the socket c5. Drums 36 and 3 have their peripheries groved to guide the windings of the cable 38 and are of differential size, so that when they are both conjointly rotated in one direction, as the result of the rotation of shaft 35, one drum will pay out or take up the cable faster or slower than the other takes it up or pays it out, thus resulting kin the shortening and lengthening of the loop 39 and correspondlingly raismg and lowering the jib-member c2 which is suspended by the cable. The ends of the cable are reversely wound on the drums, so that, as one drum pays out the cable, the other drum will take it u at a differential rate of speed as aforesai Motor 30-is of the reversible type.
To insure the stopping of the motor when the jib-member c2 has reached either of its extreme positions, provision is made for autoto control the motor and its direction of operation. Contact 45 is adapted to be swung into engagement with either of said contacts 45.h and 45, and when it is between them, the motor circuit will be interrupted. A handle 46 is fixed to the outer end of shaft 45, so that arm 45 may be swung into position to close the circuit, either through contact 45 or contact 45", according to the direction in which the motor is to travel to shift the jib. A perforated stud 47 is connected to an arm on the handle 46 and a rod 48 extends loosely through said stud. Said rod has onel of its ends pivoted to a lug 49 which is fixed to the fork c3 which forms a part of the jib-member c2, so that the rod will swing with said fork. Adjustable abutments 50 and 51, such as nuts, are screw-threaded to a rod 48 and are adapted to engage the stud 47 to'open the switch when jib-member c2 reaches its extreme raised or lowered position respectively. By shifting the handle 46 in one direction, the arm 45 will close the switch to cause the motor to be operated in one direction until the handle is manually shifted to open the circuit or until it is automatically shifted by vone of said abutments. posite direction, a circuit for reversely operating the motor will be closed until the handle is manually shifted to open the switch or the other abutment engages the stud 47 to automatically open the switch.
An endless belt 60, carried by pulleys 61 and 62, feeds sand from a hopper 63 into the chute 52 which is carried by and movable with the projector-supporting arm B which also supports the feed-belt b. Pulley 61 is driven by a suitable gearin and a motor contained in a housing 64 ywhic is fixedly secured to the top of, and rotates with, the socket c5, as well as with the jib. The shaft 65 for idler pulley 62 is carried by a pair of members 66 which lhave their inner ends pivoted to swing around ,the shaft of pulley 61. Each member 66 com- By shifting the handle 46 in the oplOl prises a pipe or tube 67 and a bearing 68 for one end of shaft 65 havinga screw 69 extending into one of the tubes and adapted to be adjusted by a nut 7() to adjust the shaft 65 inwardly or outwardly to keep the endless belt 60 taut. Arms 71 are Iixedly and adjustably secured by screws 72 in the bracket e9,
and these arms support the. outer ends of the belt supporting members 66. A deflector 73 is supported by arms 71, to direct sand from belt 60 into chute 62. Arms 71 are raised and lowered vertically in a rectilinear path with the jib-member c', and correspondingly raise and lower the outer end of the feed-belt 60 with the vertical adjustment of the projector and the sand-feeding belt b.
In operation, thc sand will be continuously fed in regulated quantities from the ho per 63 to belt 6() which will discharge it into c lute o and onto belt b which will feed the sand into the projector. The latter is movable horizontally around the iivotal connection between the arm and the j1b and also around the axis about which the jib swings, so that the head ma be easily moved to project wads ot sand into all portions of a subjacent flask. W'hen it is desired to raise or lower a the projector head, the jib member G2 will be swung vertically until the projector is positioncd in the desired elevation. To effect this `raising and lowering, the operator will close the switch 45 to close the circuit through the motor which is of the reversible type, so that it may be operated in either direction. When operated in one direction, it will, through a reducing gearing 33, 34 drive the shaft 35, on which both of the drums 36 and 37 are fixed. By reason of the differences of the diameters of the drums, the larger drum will wind up the cable 38 faster than it is paid out by the drum 36, thus shortening the loop 39 and causing the jib-member c2 to swing upwardly from its pivot c4. This vertical swinging will raise the pivot ca between thc members c and c2 of the jib and the rods 520 will swing in parallelism with the member of to maintain the horizontality of the member c', so that the projector-supporting arm l5 will remain horizontal and the angle of deliver t of the sand b the )ro'ector will not be changed. The ji operating mechanism, consisting of the drums and cable, are of such character that they will support the jib in any position without additional locking means. lVhen the switch is shifted to operate the motor 30 in reverse direction, the loop 39 ol the cable will be lengthened and the jihmember c2 will swing downwardly and lower the projector and its supporting arm without changing their position with respect to the horizontal plane. In raising and lowering the member c2, the supports 66 for the upper sand conveyor belt will swing about the shaft of pulley 61, so that the outer end of the belt will be raised and lowered correspondingly to the chute b2 which is carried by the supporting arm B. The nuts rest on the arms 71, so the members 66 will rise and fall with jib-mcmber c. In event the operator should fail to open the switch 45 before the jib-member c2 reaches its upper or lower limit of movement, the abutment nuts 50, 51 will engage stud 47 and shift the switch lever 46 to open the switch.
The invention exempliies a molding machine oi. the sand projector type in which the projector is movable horizontally over flasks, and in which rovision is made for raising and lowering t e projector by means of a vertically swinging jlb-member; also, a structure of this character in which said member is power-operated and in which the lifting connection is self-locking. The invention also exemplifies an automatic switch cutofi` for the jib-operating motor, so that it will stop when said member reaches either of its extreme positions.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector mechanism mounted on the supporting means for driving the projector and means or vertically swinging said member.
2. In a molding machine, the combination of a horizontally movable projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector mechanism mounted on the supporting means for driving the projector, and means for vertically swinging said member. f
3. In a molding machine, the combination of a horizontally movable projector, a motor for driving the projector movable therewith, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, and means for swinging said member.
4. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, and mechanism for raising and lowering said member.
5. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism mounted on the supporting means for driving the proj ector, and mechanism for raisin and lowermg said member rotatable orizontally therewith.
6. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supportingthe projector comprising a structure pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism mounted on the supporting means for driving the projector, and means for vertically swinging the structure, said structure comprising a pair of parallel swinging members to cause the projector to move rectilinearly during the swinging movement of the structure.
7. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the rojector comprising a structure pivote to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism mounted on the supportlng means, for driving the projector, a horizontally movable rojector carrying arm ivoted to one end ci) the structure, and means or vertically swinging the structure, said structure comprising a pair of parallel swinging members to cause the projector and said arm to move rectilinearly during the swinging movement of the structure.
8. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable structure plvoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism mounted on the supporting means for driving the projector and means for vertically swinging the structure, said structure comprising a pair of parallel swinging members to cause the projector to move rectilinearly during the swinging movement ofthe structure.
, 9. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable structure pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism mounted on the supporting means for driving the projector, and a horizontally movable projector carrying-,arm pivoted to one end of the structure, and means for vertically swinging the structure, said structure comprising a pair of parallel swinging members to cause the projector and said arm to move rectilinearly during the swinging movement of the structure.
10. In a molding'machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism mounted` on the supporting means for driving the projector, mechanism for raising and lowering said member, and means for feeding sand to the projector in all of its positions.
11. In a molding machine, the combination of al projector, driving mechanism for the projector including a motor movable with the projector, means for supporting the projector and the driving mechanism comprising a horizontally rotatable member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, and mechanism for raising and lowering said member.
12. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, means for vertically swinging said member, mechanism for driving the projector mounted on and movable with said member, andk means for feeding sand to the projector comprising a conveyor ivoted to swing 'vertically with said mem er.
13. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the proyjector comprlsing a horizontally rotatable member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism fondriving the projector, mounted on and movable horizontally and vertically with said member, means for verticall swinging said member, and means for feeding sand to the projector comprising a conveyor pivoted to swin vertically and rotate horizontally with sai member.
14. InA a molding machine, the combination of a projector, driving mechanism comprising a motor movable with the projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector with its driving mechanism, means for vertically swinging said member, and means for feeding sand to the projector in all of its positions comprising a conveyor pivoted to swing vertically and horizontally with said member.
15. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the proj ector comprising a horizontally swinging arm and a jib pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the arm, mechanism for driving the projector mounted on and movable with the jib. and means for raising and lowering the j ib, the arm being pivoted to the jib.
16, In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally swinging arm, and a jib pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the arm and pivoted to swing horizontally, mechanism for driving the projector mounted on and movable with the jib, and means for raising and lowering'the jib, the arm being pivoted to the jib.
17. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally swinging arm and a jib pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the arm and pivoted to swing horizontally, the arm being pivoted to the jib, mechanism for driving the projector mounted on and movable with the jib, means for raising and lowering the jib, and means for feeding sand to the projector comprising elements movable with the arm and the jib respect-ively.
18. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the proj ector comprising a horizontally swinging arm and a jib pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the'arm, mechanism for driving the projector mounted on and movable with the jib, means for raising and lowering lll the jib, the arm being pivoted to the jib, and a motor connected to drive the projector mounted on and movable with said arm,
19. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the p rojector comprising a horizontally swinging arm and a jib pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the arm and ivoted to swing horizontally, the arm being pivoted to the jib, mechanism for driving the projector mounted on and movable with the jib, means ltor raising and lowering the ib, a motor for driving said projector mounted on and movable with said arm, and means for feeding sand to the projector comprising elements movable with the arm and the jib respectively.
20. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector, mechanism for driving the projector A mounted on and movable with said member,
means for raising and lowering said member, and means for causing the projector to move bodily and vertically during the vertical swinging movements of the jib.
21. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, driving means for the projector comprising a motor movable with the projector. means for supporting the projector and its driving mechanism comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically to raise and lower the projector and pivoted to swing horizontally. means for swinging the member vertically, and means for causing the projector to move bodily and vertically during the vertical swinging movements of the jib.
22. In a molding machine, the combination of a sand projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically, driving mechanism for the projector mounted on the supporting means and movable with the projector, and mechanism for swinging the member to raise and lower the projector comprising a plurality of differential drums and a cable operated thereby.
23. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically, driving mechanism for the projector mounted on the supporting means and movable with the projector, and mechanism for swinging the member to raise and lower the projector comprising a plurality of differential drums, and a cable operated thereby, a horizontally rotatable bracket to which the member is pivoted, and means on the bracket over which the cable is looped.
24. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a member pivoted to swing vertically, driving mechanism for the` proje'ctor mounted on the supporting means and bracket, a member pivoted to said bracket to swing vertically, mechanism for swinging the member to ralse and lower the projector comprising a plurality of diierential drums, a cable operated thereby, a motor, reducing gearing for driving the drums mounted on and vertically movable with` said members, and means on the bracket over which the cable is looped.
26. In a molding machine, the combination of a projector, means for supporting the projector comprising a horizontally rotatable jib composed of a member pivoted to swing vertically and a member pivoted to the outer end of the jib to swing horizontally, drivin mechanism for the projector mounted on and movable with the jib, means for raising and lowering the vertically swinging member, and means operative to retain the other member in a horizontal position during said vertical of a projector, means for supporting the proj ector comprising a horizontally rotatable jib composed of a member pivoted to swing vertically and a member pivoted to the outer end of the j ib to swing horizontally, drivin mechanism for the projector mounted on an movable with the jib, means for raising and lowering the vertically swinging member, means for causing the other member to move bodily during said vertical movement, and an arm pivoted on the bodily movable member to swing horizontally, the rojector being mounted on the outer end o said arm.
28.
