This invention relates to jacks intended for use in connection with automobiles or the. like for effecting lifting and has for its object the provision of an extremely simple ack involvin the minimum number of parts and which my, therefore, be manufactured with very little expense.
An important object is toprovide a ack in which the operating lever or handle is pern'ianently connect-ed with the body so that separation and possible loss will be avoided.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings we have. shown the device as comprising a stationary member including a base 11 from which rises an elongated hollow body 12 formed at one side with a slot 13 which extends longitudinally.
Slidably mounted within the hollow body 12 is a bar 14 having a rib 15 projecting through the slot 13 and notched or toothed as indicated at 16. At its upper end the bar 14 has a reduced extension 17 thereon upon which is rotatably mounted a head'lS, the extension 17 being upset at 19 to prevent removal of the head while permitting swivelling action. This head is to be engaged beneath the object to be lifted.
The numeral 20 designates the handle which is formed as an elongated lever provided at one end with a curved portion 22.

Intermediate its end this lever is provided with an enlargement 24 apertured for the passage of a yoke 25 which embraces the body 12 and which terminates in arms 26 directed toward each other and pivoted within holes or sockets 27 in the body.
The means for holdingthe bar 14 in adjusted position after movement by the lever comprises a yoke 28 having a bight portion 29 adapted to engage within selected notches 16. The ends of the arms of this yoke are formed 'with lateral extensions 30 pivotally engaged within holes or sockets 31 in the sides of the body.
In the operation, it will be seen that the head 18 is engaged beneath an automobile axle or other object to be lifted and the lever 20 has its toe 23 engaged within a convenient notch, subsequent to which the lever is forced downwardly, pivotal action occuring where the-yoke25 passes through the lug 24,
the result being that the bar 14 is moved up wardly, the bight portion 29 of theyoke 28 engaging within a notch and preventing the bar from moving downwardly. This action is continued until-the article. or object has been lifted to the desired extent. Lowering may be effected in a similar but reverse manner. The device is very simple, easy to operate and as the parts cannot become separated there. is no danger of loss.
VVhile'we have shown and described'a preferrcd embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that we reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described the invention, we claim:
In a jack of the character described, a standard provided with a base and having a bore therein, said standard being formed in one side with a vertically extending slot of less width than the bore, a bar conformingly engaging and slidable within the bore in the standard and having a notched rib projecting through and beyond said slot, a head on said bar, a lever having one end formed with a lip adapted to be engaged within a selected notch and having its other end serving as a handle, an. apertured ear on said lever spaced from the lip, a yoke having a substantially V-shaped portion pivotally engaged within said .apertured ear and further including parallel arm portions having lateral extensions directed toward each other, said standard being formed in opposite sides with recesses receiving said extensions, the standard'being provided at a lower point in its opposite sides with other recesses, and a retaining member yoke to effect vertical upward movement of of yoke form including spaced parallel arms the bar With respect to the standard.
