METAL FRAME FOR DOORS.
Application' led March 6,
My invention relates to means for framing door openings and particularly to means for joining the ends of all metal frames.
I am aware that metal frames of different forms have been devised but many thereof are so constructed that they must lbe assembled and permanently united in the shop, necessitating shipping and. handling in assembled condition. This is undesirable for many reasons. Y
One object of my invention is to provide a frame composed of elements of the proper shape and having associated therewith suitable means enabling the respective frame elements to be assembled and rigidly joined in the field. In the construction shown, this is accomplished by Very simple elements and the assembly is simply effected by the seating of a few screws. The resulting structure is firm and rigid and insuresl a perfect miter joint. f
Another improvement disclosed in connection with the parts illustrated is in the means for readily7 placing and anchoring the frame preliminary to the laying of the Wall. This means comprises a wood block simply secured in the frame and adapted to form a means of connection with vertical struts or braces extending downward from the ceiling,
The invention will be more readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 isa side elevation of a corner of a frame arranged in accordance with my in- Vention g y Fig. 2 is an elevation from one edge of the frame shown in Fig. 1.;
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; p
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the relation of two separated attaching channels;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view onrthe line 66 of Fig. 7 showing a slightly modified construction;
Fig.,7 is a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 6, and
Figs. 8 and 9 are perspective views of two attaching elements.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, I have illustrated portions of a frame or casing consisting of vertical and horizontal elements of duplicate form or cross sectional shape. The cross section of the casing is best shown in Fig. 4 in which it will be seen it comprises a jamb 10, a stop 11 1928. ,Serial No. 259,431.
formed outwardly from the metal of the jamb, a flange 12 constituting a decorative trim and a rebent margin 13 acting as a plaster terminal. This may be duplicated on the two sides of the frame. l
Asbest shown in Fig. 1, the ends of the vertical and horizontal members are mitered and an object of the invention is vto provide sure and certain means for effecting a close fit of the miter joint. To this end, I rovide a pair of attaching elements in the form of short channels best shown in Fig. 5.V The channels comprise a Vweb 14, side flanges 15, ears or lugs 16 bent inwardly from the ends of the flanges 15 and a tongue 17 projecting from the web 14'. The lugs and tongueare suitably apertured. It will be noted that the channels are, in effect, exact duplicates, the upper being fitted snugly within the channel of the cross frame member and the lower being similarly fittedy within the vertical frame member. When fitted in place and permanently weldedV the vertical and' horizontal members of the frame, with the apertureslin the lugs in registering relation; may be ac curately drawn together by the use of screws thus insuring an accurate fitting of the miter joint. Y y
As an additional means for insuring a more rigid connection and to prevent distortion during the process of setting of the frame I provide the L shaped side plates, two of which are employed, one at each side of the attaching channels. One leg 18 of the L shaped plate is welded to the flanges 15 of the attaching channel in the cross member of the fra-me while the other leg 19 lies along side i of the corresponding flanges of the lower attaching channel. Registering holes provided in the plate and the flanges of the channel accommodate bolts or screws 20 as best shown in Figs. 1 and 4. At the inner marginal edge of the L shaped plates I provide the angular flange 21 which abuts snugly against a portionof'the trim 12 of the frame.
The side plates being welded to the cross member of the frame and being firmly held by bolts to the vertical member of the frame insures a rigid connection and avoids any strain or distortion on the fastening screws at the miter.
As a means for stiffening the two plates and to serve as a mounting for a wood block 22, I provide a short channel section having a web 23 and side flanges 24 that fits bet-Ween the two legs 19 of the plates and may be weldy ed thereto.
ter the wall has been laid to a certain height Y the braces including the block 22 are knocked out and the space between the flanges receive the tile or other formv of wall. j
In the Construction in F igs. 6 to 9 inclusive the frame or casing elements are identical with those already described'.V However, the attaching` elements differ somewhat in that they are arranged in right lines instead of diagonally as shown in the construction just described. The attaching channels are best shown in Figs. 8 and 9. The upper channel Yshown in Fig. 8 comprises a web 26 which may be welded to the jamb, side flanges 27 and apertured ears or lugs 28 integral withthe side flanges. The lower channel comprises a web 29 having; apertures therein and which is welded to thej amb of the vertical frame element, and side flanges 30 having apertures V3l therein. l/Vhen Vthe parts are positioned as shown in Fig, 6 screws 32 maybe passed through the registering apertures to securely draw the frame element; into the proper meeting relation of the miter'joint. v
lAs in the construction of Figs. l to 5, I provide side plates 32 of angular outline which are welded to the flanges. 27 of the upper element and which are apertured to accommodate bolts 33 vpassing` through the plates and aperture 31 in the lower attaching element. Similarly I provide a cross channel Set extending between the plates and acting as a seat for a wood block 35.-
p In each 'of the constructions the assembly is very'simply accomplished with the assurance that an exact fit of the parts will result. A
firm and rigid frame is insured at comparatively small expense. Furthermore the simple j means for attachment of bracing or positioning means will commend itself to those required t install the frames.
Modifications other than those disclosed herein will undoubtedly suggest themselves to others and I do not wish to be limited except asindicated in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In a metal door frame a combination with vertical and transverse elements, metal members secured to one of said elements and projectinggvin to the plane of another element and adapted to be secured thereto to retain the elements in proper relation and a wood block secured to one'of said metal members and adapted to act as a temporary means for use in positioning and holding the framesbetween a floor and Ceiling.
2. In conibination, vertical and horizontal frame members including integral jamb and trim, channel memberswelded to said vertical and horizontal members and having registering apertured portions adapted to receive holding` means,.and means for securing a temporary wood block to one 'ofsaid channel members for use in positioning said frame between a floor and ceiling. 'i
3. In combination7 vertical and horizontal doorframe elements each consisting; of a sheet of metal bent to provide integral jamb,V stop and trim elements, a metal holdingl device welded to respective vertical and horizontal frame members and provided with cooperating' apertured wing portions adapted to receive screws for accurately'positioning the frame elements at their corners, and addition,- al metal members welded to one'of'said frame members and projecting around theV corner into adjacent cooperative relation to the other frame element, and additional holding means associated with said additional member and said cooperating frame member. Q In testimony whereofI have aHiXed my signature.
