ANDREW MUIR, OF SPARTA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEI VIENT IN COLTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 71,692, dated January 4, 1876 application filed October 8, 1875.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MUIR, of Sparta, Randolph county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in R0- tary Oolters for Plows, of which the following is a specification: v

The invention is an improvement in that class of rotary colters which are attached to plow-beams by such devices as enable them to be adjusted and secured in any adjustment higher or lower, or at different points along the beam. According to my invention the colter has its bearings in a plate which is provided with parallel vertical slots, whose opposite edges are notched to receive or engage with the edges of square or polygonal bolts, which secure the said plate to the plow-beam, as hereinafter described.
A is a plate, which is placed against the side of a plow-beam in a vertical position, and upon the outer side of the upper and lower parts of which are formed two bearings, B, for the round standard 0. In the opposite sides of the lower end of the standard 0 are formed inclined notches 0 to receive the upper ends of two bars, D, which are secured in place by a bolt passing through them and the said standard. To and between the lower ends of the inclined bars D is pivoted the rotary colter. The standard (J is kept from dropping out of its bearings B by a pin, 0 passed through its upper end, and which rests upon the upper edge of the upper bearing B. The standard 0 is kept from rising in its bearings B by a shoulder, 0 formed upon its lower part, and which rests against the lower edge of the lower bearing B. The rotary movement of the standard 0 in its bearings, B is limited by a lug or pin, 0 formed upon or attached to the said standard, and which plow to take or leave land, or, in other words,
to cut a wider or narrower furrow. In the plate A, upon the opposite sides of and parallel with the standard 0, are formed longitudinal slots a, to receive the bolts E, by which the said plate is secured to the plow-beam. The plate A, along the edges of the slots a, is notched to receive the corners of the bolts E,- to prevent the said plate from slipping upon the said bolts.
In attaching the device to an iron plowbeam the bolts E are placed the one above the plow-beam and in the upper part of the slot a, and the other below the plow-beam and in the lower part of the other slot at, or in a hole formed in thelower part of the plate A. The bolts E are also passed through a long slot, or through a slot and a hole, in a yoke, F, placed upon the other side of the plow-beam.
In attaching the device to a wooden plowbeam the yoke F may be used, or the bolts E may be passed directly through the said plowbeam.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The plate A, provided with parallel vertical slots at, having'notches 0 located opposite or in pairs, and the colter-bearings B B, in combination with bolts E E, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
