EUGENE E. KERN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM R. ALBERTS AND HUBER/1 J. ECHELE, BOTH OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SUPPORT.
Application filed March 21, 1928.
A feature of the invention consists in providing a support of this type with. resilient members which grip the side edges of the support-- ed panels and prevent them from vibrating.
Another feature of the invention consists in Jroviding sucha support that is devoid of solid fastenings. By virtue of such a. construction there is obviated the liability or": the glass to break or crack as a result of undue pressure being exerted thereon by means of the solid fasteuings. Furthermore, the supported panels maybe quickly and easily removed from or inserted into the resilient gripping members of the support without the necessity of first manipulating any fast-em lugs. v
Still another feature of the invention consists iu the provision of a support of the character described that is simple in construction, and may be manufactured economically and by the use or ordinary machinery. As illustrated the support is pressed out of a single narrow strip. of suitable material, and the strip is provided at each of its ends with a plurality of cars that may be usedv in securing the supportin place.
Other features and objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the specification .in the light of the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a planview in section of a support of the improved type holding two panes of glass, a
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the support of Fig. 1 with the glass removed,
Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the support, and
Fig. t is an enlarged diagrammatic view showing the resiliency of the support.
Serial No. 263,323.
As shown in the drawing the reference numeral indicates a hollow body portion of the support that is formed by being pressed out of a flat strip of metal, and is finished on its outer surface to provide a pleasing appearance. .For the purpose of gripping the edges of a plurality of panels 18, 18, the marginal edges of the strip are bent at 12, 12, inwardly in the direction of the center of the body portion to provide a plurality of side or clamping walls 14-, 14-, and they are bent outwardly in a direction away from the center oil? the strip to provide an additional plurality of walls 16, 16, which cooperate with the inner walls in holding in place the supported panels.
The walls 16, 16, being formed of thin metal are resilient, and they are formed with a crease extending throughout the greater portion of the length of each wall, and this crease co-operates with the natural resiliency of the clamping walls in gripping the side edges of the panels and holding them against vibration. Furthermore it will be observed that the construction is free of solid fastenings and that the glass may be inserted readily in the support without going to the necessity of removing iastenings, or being subject to breakage through pressure applied by the atastenings.
' For the purpose of holding the support in place during the use thereof the outer walls 1.6, 16 are formed with cars 19, 19, at each end which extend in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the support and 0ccupy an overlapping position relatively to each other. A fastener receiving aperture 20 extends through the overlapping cars 19, 19, and is utilized in holding the support in place during use. I
lVhile the invention is illustrated herein as embodied in a support providedwith a plurality of oppositely disposed clamping channels, it is to be appreciated that the invention contemplates employment in other similar forum of supports as, for example, those in which only a single channel is provided. Supports of this latter type may be used in holding in position the top or bottom edge of a plate glass window, etc.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A support for a panel, comprising a body 5 portion, resilient means carried'hyithe body portion and formed integrally therewith for engaging a side edge of the panel, and means comprising ears formed on said resilient means for use in securing the support in place during the use thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto afiix my signature.
EUGENE E. KERN.
