In carrying out our invention, we provide a casing 1 having openings 2 and 3 therein. A frame 4: is disposed in the casing and is provided with side walls 5 and 6. Rollers 7 8, 9, and 10 are mountedupon shafts 7, 8, 9and 10, respectively, which are rotatably mounted in the side walls 5 and 6 of the frame 1. A solenoid is provided having a core 103 which is secured to the clutch 101, and coils 104' and 105.
Means is provided for automatically cutting ofilthe source of current from one of the solenoids in operative connection with the clutches 96 and 101 and permitting the source of current to flow through the other solenoid. 'lhismeans includes a solenoid 106 having a core 107, and coils 108 and 109. Contact discs 110, 111, 112, and 118 are operatively con nected to the core 107 and are adapted to move therewith.
In Figure 5, we have shown a detailed view of the clutch66 which is identical in construction to the clutches T1, 96, and 101, and a description of one will apply to them all. The clutch-66, is provided with an annular groove 11 1. A pawl 115 is pivotally mounted upon a bracket 116 which is rigidly mounted upon the worm gear 11. The pawl passes through an opening in the worm gear which permits the pawl to move freely inwardly and outwardly and is disposed in a'position so to engage with the clutch 66. Then the pawl 115 engages with the clutch 66, the lug 11";- oi the pawl is received in the'annular groove 11st of the clutch. In this manner,.tho pawl. is temporarily held in opened position. A. gear 118 is rigidly secured to the roller '7 and is positioned whereby the pawl 115 engages therewith when released by the clutch. This is a means for operatively connecting the roller 7 with the shaft 36 of the driving mechanism.
From. the foregoing description of the various parts of the device; the operation thereof may be readily understood. The casing 1 is secured in any desired position. preiterahly at the fore end ot th'o coach or car. When the switch is closed the scroll 11 is automatically actuated. Assume that the scroll is moving in the direction oi? the 1 ow .119. During this movement, the clutch '2'1 in closed position and the scroll continues in its n'ioven'ient until one of the openings 17 in the scroll moves into alignment with the roller 20. In this mannerytht; roller 20 is permitted. to contact with the roller 12. thus closing the circuit which permits the source of current to current to pass through the coil 7 1 of the solenoid and move the core 73. together with the clutch 71, into opened position. This trees the roller 8 from the driving mechanism permitting the scroll to, remain inthe stopped position until the outdo cam roller 50' rotates to a position whereby 54. This closes the circuit andpermits' the source of current to pass through the coil T5, thus n'ioving the core 73 and the clutch T1 into closed position thus again connecting the roller 8 with thedriving mechanism. This operatioi'i is continued until the opening 15 in the scroll. which is adjacent the end thereci moves into av position adjacentthe roller 19. At this point, the roller 19 is permitted to contact with the roller 12, thus closing the circuit and peri'nitting the source of current to flow through the coil 79, and causing the core 78, top; ;her with the contact discs 81 to 84 inclusive, to move inwardly. By so doing. the circuits for actuating tl e clutch 71 are cut cit. and the circuits for actuating the clutch (56 are now permitted to he opened and closed by the cut-in camroller 50. and the cut-out cam roller 49.
When the cut-in cam. roller 50 rotates to av position whereby the lug 52 contacts with the contact points 54;. the circuit is closed pern'iitting the source of current to pass from the battery through the conductors 91, 90 80.88. .120. the contact disc 81, a conductor 121. through the coil T0, a conductor 122, tl e con ductors 86 and 85. back to the battery. is the source oi currentjliou's throughthe coil 70, the clutch (50 and the core-68 are moved inwardly into closed position. This engages the-roller '7 with the driying mechanism and causes the scroll 11 to move in the reverse direct-ion. The scroll: continues its movement in this directionwhich indicated by the arrow 123 until one o'i 'the openings 17 moves into a position adjacent the roller 20. At this point a circuit is closed permitting the source of current to pass ttrom the battery through the conductors 91. .0. through the rollers 1&12, and 20, through the conijluctor 05, the cutout cam roller t9. the c 'mductor 91-. a. conductor 12st, through the contact disc 67, through the coil 69 and through the C011- doctors 92,86 and 85. back to the battery,
As the source of current passes through the coil as the core 68 and theclutch 06 are moved outwardly disengaging the roller Y from the driving mechanism. This operation iscontinued until the opening 16 within the scroll11 is moved to a pos tion adjacent the roller 21. @The roller 21 is then permitted to contact with the roller 12, thus closing a circuit and permitting the source of curicnt-to pass from the battery through the conductors 91, 00,'the rollers 18. and 21,v through. conductor 125 through the cont-act disc 82,
\ the coil 80. a conductor 1 6, and the conductor is then moved in the direction of the arrow 119. At each movement oi? the scroll 11, a different advertisement is displayed.
The scroll 2 1 is actuated in substantially the same manner as the scroll 11. However, instead of continually moving, the scroll 21 is only moved at desired times, as forinstance, when a car is approaching a station. To actuate the scroll 2 1;, the operator presses a button or switch 127 closing a circuit and permitting the source of current to pass from the bat te y through the conductor 85, through the switch 127, a conductor 128, an audible signal 129, acoil 130 which is wound around the core 63 and through the conductors 131,
89, and'91, and back to the battery.
In this manner, the plunger 63 is withdrawn from the pawl 63 against the tension of the spring 63, the pawl 63 is moved into engagement with the ratchet'wheel by the spring 63*, and the cut-in cam roller 58 and the cut-out cam' roller 57' are rotated. As the cut-in cam roller 58 is rotated, the integral lug 60 thereupon is moved into contact with the contact points 62, thus closing the circuit permitting the source of current to pass from the battery 76 through the conductor 85, the conductors 136 and 137, through the coil 104, the conductor 133, through the contact disc 112,'through the conductor 132, the cutin cam roller 58 and the conductors 131, S9, 90 and 91 back-to the battery.
As the source of current passes through the coil 10 1, the core 103 and the clutch 101 are moved outwardly engaging the roller 10 with the driving mechanism, thus causing the scroll 2st to move in the direction of the arrow 135.

roller 22 which closes the circuit for permitting the source of current to pass through the coil 105 and move the core 103, together with the clutch 101, inwardly. 'This movement- 01 the clutch disengages the roller 10 from the driving mechanism and permits the scroll to stop. This operation is continued until the opening 25 within the scroll is moved into alignment with the roller 29. This permits the roller 29 to contact with the roller 22, thus closing a circuit for permitting the source-of current to flow through the coil 109 and move the core 107, together with the contact discs 110 to 113 inclusive, inwardly. This operation cuts off the currents for actuating the clutch 101 and permits the cut-in cam roller 58 and the cut-out cam roller 57 to close circuits for actuating the cluth 96. The clutch 96 engages and disengages the roller 9 with the driving mechanism, thus causing the scroll to move in the reverse direction.
This operation is continued until the opening 26 within the scroll 24 is moved into a 'se Yer a 1 oosition ad'acent the roller 31. This 'Jermits l the roller 31 to contact with the roller 22, thus closing acircuit' and permitting the'source of current to pass through the coil 108. As the source of current passes through the coil 108, the core 107, together with the contact discs 110 to 113 inclusive, is moved outwardly cutting off thecircuits for actuating the clutch '96 and permitting thecut-in cam roller 58 has also been brought into a position adja cent the roller 29. Therefore, upon starting the return trip, the scroll is automatically set in readiness to indicate the stations.

A contact block 141 is positioned between the ends of the contact plate 110 and is in electrical connection with the contact point 61 by means of a conductorMQ. A ratchet wheel 1 13 operatively connected to the dial 13 and the contact hand 139 and is a dapted to move therewith. A weight pawl 1 1st is'adapted to engage withthe'ratchet wheel 14:3 and is pivotally mounted upon one end of a lever 145. at 146 and is held in a downward position by means of a tension spring 147 and the weight pawl 14:41. A magnetic coil 1-18 is positioned adjacent the free end of the levcr14r5, one end of the coil being in electrical connection to the contact plate 1 10, the other end of the coil being in electrical connection with the conductor 85 and the battery 6. p v
Assuming that the operator wishes to bring into view the name of the fourth station from that which is already in view, owing tothe fact that a train is to pass by thesestations without stopping, the operator turns the dial until the segment 5 is in alignment with an indicating point 140. The operator then presses the button 12?, causing the scroll 24:
The lover1 15 is pivoted to be actuated in'the mannerheretofore described. fasthe scroll is actuated; and the opening 27. comes into alignment with the roller 30', the circuit is closed, permittingthe source of current to pass from the battery tlnough the conductor 85, the .inagnet 148, the contactvplate 140,th e contact hand 139, the conductor 138, the rollers 30, 22 and 28, and the conductor- 91, back to the battery. As the source of current passes through the magnet 148, the pawl 144, is raised upwardly and held in this position until the scroll 24 moves so as to separate the roller 30 fromthe roller 22, thus breaking the circuit and permitting the pawl to move downwardly and move the sp rocket wheel one notch. This operation is continued until the sprocket wheel is moved so as to bring the contact hand 139. back into engagement with the contact block 141. It will be observed that each time one of the openings 27 comes into alignment-with the roller 80, the pawl 144 will be actuated, and, when released, the pawl will move the sprocket wheel and the contact h and thedistance of one tooth. lhis mechanism prevents the source of current from flowing through the cut-out cam roller 57 so as to release the clutch 101. 'When the contact hand 139 has been returned to its normal position, the device is actuated in theusual manner heretofore described.
The contact hand 139 remains inrcontact with the contact plate 140 after the dial 138 has been returned to the secondindication thereon. Therefore the above mentioned circuit for actuating the magnet 148 will be closed, thus raising the pawl'144. When the circuit is again broken, the spring 147 will bring the pawl into engagement with the ratchet wheel. The force of the sprin will rotate the sprocket 143, thus bringing the dial into its normal position and the contact hand into engagement with the block 141.
We claim:
1. A device of the type described comprising a display scroll, a pair of roller shafts, rollers mounted upon said roller shafts, said. scroll disposed upon said rollers, a drive shaft, means for rotating said drive shaft, a driven shaft operatively connected to said drive shaft, ratchet wheels rigidly mounted upon said. roller shafts, a worm gear rotatably carried by each of said roller shafts, worms rigidly mounted upon said driven shaft and in mesh withsaid worm gears, a pawl pivotally carried by each of said worm gears and arranged to be moved into and out of registration with their respective ratchet wheels, and means for moving one of said pawls into engagement with one of said ratchet Wheels for moving said scroll in one direction, said pawl-actuating means being arranged to move said pawl out of engagement with said. ratchet wheel for stopping the movementof said scroll.

ried by each of said rollers, worms rigidly mounted upon said driven shaft and in mesh with said wormgears, a pawl pivot-ally car-f rlcd by each of said worm gears and arranged to be moved into and out of registration with their respective ratchet wheels, means for moving one of said pawls into engagement with one of said ratchet wheels for moving said scroll in one direction, saidpawl-actuating means being arranged to move said pawljout of engagement with said ratchet wheel for stopping the movement of said scroll, and means for moving the other pawl into engagement with the other ratchet wheel for moving the scroll a predetermined dis tance in the opposite direction, said second named pawl-moving means being arranged to move said second named pawl out of engagement with said second named ratchet wheel for stopping said scroll.
3. In a device of the type described, a scoll, a roller for said scroll, a ratchet wheel rigdly' carried by said roller, a worm gear rotatably carried by said roller, a drive shaft, means for rotating said'drive shaft, a driven shaft, a worm rigidly mounted upon said driven shaft and in mesh with said worm gear, a bracket mounted upon said worm gear, a pawl pivotally carried by said bracket and arranged to be moved into registration with said ratchet wheel, and means for moving said pawl out of registration with said ratchet wheel.
4. A device of the type described comprising a display, scroll, a roller for receiving said scroll, a drive shaft, means for rotating said drive shaft, a driven shaft operatively con nected to said drive shaft, a clutch for oper atively connecting said roller to said drivento engage with said cut-in cam roller at pro determined point thereupon, electrically-operated means for actuating said clutch for connecting said roller to said drive shaft for moving said scroll, said contact points being electrically connected to said electrically-operated means for closing a circuit for permitting a source of current to pass through said electrically-operated means when said con-.
