Description

June 11, 1929. c. JACKSON 1,716,638
I TAMPER OR LIKE IMPACT TOOL Filed Dec. 22, 1927 Patented June 11, 1929.
UNl'TED' STA TES conwrtr. JACKSON, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.-
TAMPER OR LIKE IMPACT TOOL.
Application filed December 22,1927. Serial No. 241,861.
' vide an improved tool or machine for tamping the ballast of railway ties and the like which is very efficient, easy to manipulate and enables the accomplishment of a large amount of work with a minimum of effort.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will clearly appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
p A structure embodying the features of my improvements is clearly-illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is aside elevation of a tool for tamping railway ties embodying the features of IIIYIIIVGIItTOH.
Fig. 2 is an 1 elevation looking from the right of Fig.1 and partially in section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. p
Fig. 31s a side elevation of a modified form or embodiment of my invention. I
In the accompanyingdrawing the structure illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a pneumatic engine consisting of a cylinder 1 and a plunger 2. These parts are shown conventionally as the details thereof form no part of this invention. The pneumatic connections are indicated at 8 and 4, the valve mechanism, however, not being illustrated.
On the upper end of the cylinder 1 is a handle 5 the cylinder head 6 being extended into a shank 7 to receive the handle. On the lower end of the cylinder is a cross piece 8 which, in the embodiment illustrated, is formed integrally with the cylinder.
A tool crosshead 9 is resiliently connected to the cross piece 8 by means of the bolts 10 which reciprocate through the cross piece and are provided with heads 11 on their upper ends. Between these heads 11 and the cross piece are springs 12 which return the crosshead. A buffer 13 is arranged between the crosshead and cross piece 8.
The crosshead is provided with an impact member 14 which projects into the lower end of the cylinder to receive the blows from the plunger 2. Tamping blades 15 are mounted on the ends of the crosshead 9. These blades are of considerable width and are preferably inwardly curved as shown, especially where the structure is designed for tamping ties as is the case in the embodiment illustrated. These blades are spaced to embrace a tie and allow a tool to be tilted in either direction or to be held in an upright position as illustrated, which enables the tamping of a tie without the operator shifting from side to side of the tie by merely tilting the tool to one side or the other as may be desired.-
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the body member 16is of a general inverted. T shape, the handle 17 being connected to the upper end of the body member. Mounted on each end of the horionta-l portion 18 of the body member are cylinders 19, these cylinders being pneumatic engine'units provided with plungers 20.
Impact members 21 are arranged through the lower ends of the cylinders and provided with heads 22 Within the cylinder, coiled springs '23 being arranged between these heads and the outer end of the cylinder as,
shown, these coiled springs returning or resiliently supporting the impact members.
The tamper blades 24 are mounted on tho outerends of the impact members. In both of these embodiments the tools are subjected to a series of rapid impacts resulting ina rapidly vibrating movement. The tool or machine is easily manipulated and enables the, effective tamping of ties and the like with aminimum of labor on the part of the opera tor.
I have illustrated and described my improvements as I have embodied the same in tie tampers. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other embodiments or adaptations as I believe the embodiments illustrated will enable those skilled in the art to modify or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pneumatic hammer cylinder and plunger, said cylinder being provided with a cross piece at its lower end and a handle at its upper end, a crosshead provided with an impact member projecting into said cylinder to receive the blows of said plunger, supporting rods for said crosshead slidably arranged through said cross piece, retracting springs for said crosshead arranged on said supporting rods above said cross piece, and tamper blades mounted in opposed relation on the ends of said crosshead.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of an impact engine constituting a cylinder provided with a cross piece at its lower end, a crosshead operatively associated with said impact engine to receive the blows therefrom, supporting rods for said crosshead slidably arranged through said cross piece, retracting springs for said crosshead arranged on said supporting rods above said cross piece, and tamper blades mounted in opposed relation on the ends of said erosshead.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pneumatic hammer cylinder and plunger, said cylinder being provided with a handle, a crosshead provided with an impact member projecting into said cylinder to receive the blows of said plunger, said crosshead having a sliding connection to said cylinder, return springs for said crosshead, a return bufier, and tamper blades mounted in opposed relation on said crosshead.
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pneumatic hammer cylinder and plunger, said cylinder being provided with a handle, a crosshead provided with an impact member projecting into said cylinder to receive the blows of said plunger, said crosshead having a sliding connection to said cylinder, return springs for said cross head, and tamper blades mounted in opposed relation on said crosshead.
In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pneumatic hammer unit provided with a handle, a tool head resiliently connected to said pneumatic hammer unit to receive the impacts therefrom, and apair oi blade-like tools mounted on said tool head in opposed spaced relation, said tools being an impact member coacting with said impact, engine unit, and tools mounted on said tool head in opposed spaced relation.
,8. In a structure of the class described, the combination of an impact engine, a tool head resiliently connected-to said impact engine to receive the impacts therefrom, and tamper blades mounted on said tool head in opposed spaced relation, said blades being inwardly curved and spaced to embrace a railway tie or the like to be tamped.
9. In a structure of the class described, the
combination of an impact engine, a tool head resiliently connected to said impact engine to receive the impacts therefrom, and tools mounted on said tool head in spaced relation.
10. In a structure of the class described, the combination out an impact engine, a tool head movably mounted on said impact engine to receive the impacts therefrom, and tools mounted on said tool head in spaced relation.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CORIVILL JACKSON.
