This invention relates to bottle'caps with particular' reference to a closure for a bottle which may be removed tor reuse time after time. p
The object ot the invention is to provide a bottle cap for reuse.
Another object oi the invention is to provide a bottle closure :which may be readily applied to and removed from a bottle without the use ot tools.
A further object of the invention is to provide a removable bottle closure which may be applied to or removed fromv a bottle without damage to the closure and which is capable ot reuse.
A still Further object oit the invention is to provide a removable bottle cap which is economical to manufacture, eihcient in use, and one which is Y readily applied and readily removed from a bottle. v
rihe above recited and ot-her objects ot the inventionwill be apparent from the tollowing description, accompanying drawings, and appended claims.
According to the invention, the closure comprises a cap having a yoke pivoted to the cap and depending therefrom which yoke carries cams for engaging underneath the bead on the end of the bottle.V
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and the views thereof are as follows:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a bottle shown with the. closure applied thereto embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the closure` and upper end of the bottle, showing details of construction.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevational view of the neck of a bottle with the closure applied to the same, with parts being broken away, the yoke is shown in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines.
Figure 4 is a vertical section through the closure with the sealing disk eliminated.l
As shown in the drawings:
A bottle A has the usual neck 1 and bead 2 'formed about the. uppery end of the neck.
The'closure illustrated comprises a metallic cap having a skirt 3, a central depression 4, and two depending ears or lugs 5 and 6 arranged at diametrically opposite oints. Y
Each of the ears 5 and 6 has an aperture 7 near the lower end thereof which aperture is circular.
A yoke having arms 8 and 9 connected by an intermediate portion 10 is provided with bosses 11 near the upper ends ot the arms for passing through the apertures 7 in the depending ears or lugs 5` and 6 ot the cap. The central portion 10 is provided with a flange 12 whereby the yoke may be readily grasped for unlocking.
, The ends of the arms 8 and 9 beyond the bosses 11, are provided with cams 13 and 14 which cams are formed by rounding the ends of the arms 8 and 9- beyond the drums 11. e
A sealing disk'15 of resilient material such as rubber is inserted within the cap so as to be compressed when the cap is applied to a bottle tor eiilectively sealing the end of the bottle. 5 I
The portion of the cap between the central depression 4 and the skirt 3 is arcuate in cross section so as to correspond somewhatwith the shape of the upper end of the bottle to thus aid in` etfecutally sealing the bottle when the cap is applied to the same.
The operation of the closure is as follows:
The yoke is moved into dotted line position as shown in Figure 3 and thecap is applied to the end ot the bottle with the sealing disk 15 restingagainst the opening in the bottle. The cams'13 and 14p' are curved inwardly so as to engage in the bead 2 about the end of the bottle. The yoke is then moved downr wardly into the lfull line position Vof Figure 3 and also as shown in Figure 1, resulting in the engagement of the cams13 and 14 to the under side of the bead 2 thus moving downwardly the .closure andcompressing the sealing disks 15 between the cap and the end of the bottle. The sealing disk 15 being of a resilient or eleastic matcrial is distorted somewhat as shown in Figure 2 to etfectually seal the end of the bottle.
When it is desired to remove theI closure the projection 12 on the yoke may beengaged and the yoke swung upward from the full line position in lFigure 3 lto the dotted line position of Figure 3, whereupon the closure may be removed.
llVhile we have described more or less preciselyv the details of construction of our invention yet we do not wish it to be understood as limiting ourselves thereto as lil Y We are aware that changes may be made in the arrangement and proportion of parts and that equivalents may be substituted all without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention.
We claim as our invention:
l. A removable bottle closure comprising a cap, a resilient sealing disk within said cap, and a cam carried by the cap for engaging a bead on the bottle for moving said cap to vcompress said disk against the end of the bottle, said cap having a central depression to increase the sealing eifect oi said disk, said cam consisting of a iU-shapcd yoke having pivotal portions inwardly or' the tree ends of the yoke, said cap having a pair ot depending ears for engaging the pivotal connections of said yoke, and the ends of said yoke beyond the pivotal connections constituting cams.
2. A bottle closure in combination with a bottle having a bead end, said closure comprising a cap, ears on said cap, a yoke pivoted to said ears and carrying cams upwardly of the ,'pivot, said cams arranged to bear against the bead on said bottle as said yoke is moved against the bottle, and an elastic disk within said cap compressed against the bottle end when said yoke is moved to closing position.
3. A bottle closure in combination with a bottle having a beaded end, said closure comprising a cap, ears on said cap, a yoke pivoted to said ears and provided with cams outwardly of said pivotal connection, said cams being arranged to bear against the bead on the bottle as said yoke is moved against the bottle neck.
4. A bottle closure comprising a cap having depending ears, a yoke pivoted near its free ends to said ears the ends of the yoke beyond the pivots constituting cams, and a sealing disk with said cap compressible between said cap and the end of the bottle when said yoke is moved in one direction to vbring said cams to the bead of the bottle, said cap being removable by moving` the c yoke in the opposite direction.
5. A bottle closure for removable application to a bottle, comprising a cap having a central depression, a sealing disk of elastic material within said cap, two ears on said cap at diametrically opposite points, a substantially =Ushaped yoke pivoted to said ears near the free ends of the yoke arms, the ends of said arms beyond the pivots constituting cams for engaging a bead on said bottle, said yoke being curved to iit about the bottle neck, said cams being so arranged as `to exert maximumV cam action to compress said disk against the bottle end when said yoke rests against the bottle neck.
G. A bottle closure for removable application to a bottle, comprising a cap having a central depression, a sealing disk of elastic material within said cap, two ears on said cap at diametrically opposite points, a substantially'U-shaped yoke pivoted t0 said ears near the free ends of the yoke arms, the ends of saidarms beyond the pivots co-nstituting cams for engaging a bead of the bottle, said yoke being curved to tit about the bottle neck, said cams being so arranged as to exert maximum cam action to compress said disk against the bottle end when said yoke rests against the bottle neck, said yoke having a projection engageable for moving said yoke into unlocked position.
7. A bottle closure for removable application to a bottle, comprising a cap having a central depression, a sealing disk of elastic material within said cap, two ears on said cap at diametrically opposite points, a substantially iU`shaped yoke pivoted to said ears near the free ends of the yoke arms, the ends of said arms beyond the pivots extending in the same direction and constituting cams 'or engaging a bead on the bottle, said yoke being curved to it about the bottle necksaid cams being so arranged as to exert maximum cani action to compress said disk against the bottle end when said yoke rests against the bottle neck.
8. A bottle closure comprising a cap having depending ears, a yoke pivoted in said ears and having arms extending beyond the pivotal connections of said ears in the same general direction, said 4ends constituting cams for engaging under a bead on a bott-le, whereby said cap is moved against the end of the bottle when said yoke is moved in one direction. f
9. A bottle closure comprising a cap having a central depression, ears depending from said cap, a sealing disk within said cap, a one piece yoke pivotedshort of its ends to said ears, the portion of the yoke beyond the pivots constituting cams to depress said cap downwardly on a bottle and compress said disk between the head on the bottle and the central depression in the cap as the cams are moved in one direction.
