NITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JAMES M. HUNTER AND GEORGE E. HUNTER, OF OLARINDA, IOWA.
I IMPROVEMENT INLAND ROLLERS; AND MARKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 71,569, dated December 28, 1875; application filed October 2, 1875.
the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of our land roller and marker, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The object of our invention is to combine with a land-roller means which will, at the same time that the land is being rolled, mark 011' the same for planting, thereby saving time and labor in preparing the land to receive the seed, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawing, A designates an oblong rectangular frame, at the middle of the length of which is a cross-bar, indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2. B B are two rollers, which may be made hollow, and suitably loaded for crushing clods of earth, and leaving the land in a good condition to receive seed. These rollers may be made of any desired length and diameter, and they rotate about a shaft, a. G designates 'a seat for the driver, which is mounted on legs above the' inner ends of the two rollers B B, and provided with a foot-rest, b. D designates the draft-tongue,
which is pivoted to eyes fixed into the front beam of frame A, and guided and sustained by means of an arc, c, which is free to play vertically through an overhanging beam, E,
rigidly secured to the frame A. G G G designate three standards, which are rigidly secured to the rear beam-of the frame A, at suitable distances apart, and which extend downward and backward. A narrow roller, g, is applied to the lower end of each one of the standards G, which will mark the land at the same time that it is being rolled.
It will be seen that by the adjustment of the arm E upon the standard 0 the markers may be caused to press heavily upon the ground, or maybe raised above it, the rollers B forming a fulcrum for the lever E A G.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The frame A, carrying the land-rollers B and separate markers g, in combination with the arm E and standard 0, whereby the markers are caused to press heavily on the ground, or raised above it, theroller operating as-a fulcrum, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the abovewe have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
